Just thought I'd post IGN.com's score tally of Halo 2

9.5 Presentation
While the presentation is, in many ways, superb -- with a great story, pacing, etc., the ending is tricky, and the cutscenes often show pop-in.
9.5 Graphics
Everything is higher res, more polished, and the lighting, special effects, and animation all top-notch. The Normal Mapping is cool, but imperfect and sometimes troublesome.

10 Sound
The superb use of Dolby 5.1 sound colors everything with realism. The music is excellent, while the sound effects, voice-acting, & the well-known musical guests appearances work in surprisingly well.

10 Gameplay
You've got one great storyline, one hell-of-an-improved single-player game with dual-wielding, jacking, and more weapons, and some surprises.

10 Lasting Appeal
The single-player game is about 10-15 hours depending on how good you are. The online portion is unbelievably good. It surpasses everything else on Xbox Live 10-fold.

Actress Monica Bellucci, best known for her role in The Matrix: Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions, has joined the Hollywood cast lending their talent in one way or another to Ubisoft's upcoming action/adventure game Prince Of Persia Warrior Within.

Monica Bellucci will voice Kaileen, a helpless servant to the Empress of Time, adding a sensual realism to the deeply-immersive storyline.

People who checked out the recent Warrior Within demo may have noticed that the Prince Of Persia sequel also features music from metal band Godsmack. If you like your music a little bit slower Prince Of Persia Warrior Within also features an original cinematic score including classical melodies composed by Inon Zur, and a musical score by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.

The Old Man said to the Prince, "Your fate has been written. You will die." Enter the dark underworld of Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, the sword-slashing sequel to the critically acclaimed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Hunted by Dahaka, an immortal incarnation of Fate seeking divine retribution, the Prince embarks upon a path of both carnage and mystery to defy his preordained death. His journey leads to the infernal core of a cursed island stronghold harboring mankind's greatest fears. Only through grim resolve, bitter defiance and the mastery of deadly new combat arts can the Prince rise to a new level of warriorship -- and emerge from this ultimate trial with his life.

he latest installment of the long running Prince of Persia franchise, Prince of Persia Warrior Within will be adding yet another layer to the game's already intense, action-packed experience with the addition of Godsmack to its in-game musical credits.

Godsmack will be lending two of their songs--"I Stand Alone" and "Straight Out of Line"-- to the PoP:WW soundtrack. Godsmack's music is a perfect fit especially given the game's darker storyline and the edgier tone of the game with its pounding guitar riffs and hard-hitting lyrics.

In addition to the music of Godsmack, PoP:WW also features an original cinematic score composed by Inon Zur, which was recorded by the world-famous Hollywood Studio Symphony.

Here's a sample of the symphonic score.

Microsoft top brass have been courting controversy this week with a number statements about the Sony PSP, not of which will be please the Japanese manufacturer. The PSP's attempt to challenge handheld market leader Nintendo is "like developing your own little operating system and saying, 'Well, I'm going to challenge Windows'," commented Peter Moore, though Robbie Bach was more optimistic concerning their outlook.

"We've yet to see anybody make a meaningful connection between having a console and having a handheld," Bach stated, having affirmed already that Microsoft remain unfazed by the new handheld, which the firm predicted won't be a competition to the Xbox.

Redmond are however hopeful that a battle with Nintendo might distract the firm and enable Microsoft to begin hammering out a share of the console industry ahead of the PS3.

In a move that is either strategically related to an opposition to Sony's PSP, or tied to its use of the Windows CE platform, Microsoft has revealed that it will be providing games for the just-released Gizmondo handheld device, which is to get its own trendy London showcase store in coming weeks. Microsoft will offer franchises such as Age of Empires and MechAssault for the fledgling platform, to be released in the UK ahead of the rest of the world.

Rare's forthcoming puzzler It's Mr Pants will also be putting in a surprise appearance on the new machine, which must have been bolstered hugely by this new arrangement, a surprising move from Microsoft, which is clearly driven by non-games centred motives.

"This deal strengthens the existing linkage between Gizmondo and Microsoft Game Studios," gushed an understandably pleased Gizmondo Europe managing director Carl Freer. "We welcome their enthusiasm and look forward to carrying the titles on our pocket-sized console. Our collaboration puts both Gizmondo and Microsoft Game Studios in a great position to meet all challengers in the handheld gaming market."

According to Internet site, The Inquirer, Microsoft recently disclosed plans for Xbox 2 with UK market analysts.

If correct, Microsoft is looking to release two systems in fall 2005: Xbox Next and Xbox Next HD. As the names suggest, one would be a lighter, cost-friendly version of the next Xbox system, while the other would include a hard drive. How this would affect Xbox 2 game development is unknown, as games requiring a hard drive would obviously negate any users owning the lower-priced Xbox Next.

The article further states that Microsoft is shipping Xbox Next PC in the fall of 2006. This version of Microsoft's next console is not technically a console at all. Instead, it's a slimmed-down PC, which runs Windows and other PC programs, including most PC games. Xbox Next PC also includes a CD burner, wireless keyboard, mouse and controller.

Microsoft offered the standard "no comment" in regards to the report.

We'll have more information when Xbox Next launches next fall (if the report is to believed).

HALO 2 broke entertainment retail records in its first 24 hours on store shelves. Microsoft Game Studios announced that the highly-anticipated game sold through 2.4 million units in the U.S. and Canada, driving cash register receipts to the $125 million mark.

“EB Games had a record-breaking day as gamers across the country lined up for hours to be one of the first to get their hands on HALO 2 on Nov. 9, said Jeff Griffiths, president/ceo of EB Games. “The HALO 2 frenzy, anticipation and excitement felt throughout the country prove that HALO 2 has become more than a game -- it’s a pop cultural phenomenon.

Not only has HALO 2 exceeded videogame sales records, but entertainment records as well HALO 2 has generated more money on day one than any of the biggest movies in box office history including SPIDER-MAN 2, HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN and THE MATRIX RELOADED. In addition, the hot game surpassed this past weekend’s box office favorite, THE INCREDIBLES, which grossed $70.5 million in three days.

"The first 24 hours of HALO 2 sales have taken our breath away," said Peter Moore, corporate vp, worldwide marketing and publishing, Xbox. "Across North America, 2.4 million copies of the game were sold through, representing $125 million in total cash register receipts for retailers. It's no longer just a huge game for us but has become a seminal milestone for the entire industry."

Marvel Sues 2 Cos. Over Role-Playing Game

By ALEX VEIGA
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Marvel Enterprises Inc. is suing two firms behind a computer superhero role-playing game it claims allows players to make virtual characters that are too similar to ``The Hulk,'' ``X-Men'' and other heroes in the comic book company's stable.

The lawsuit claims South Korea-based NCSoft Corp. and San Jose-based Cryptic Studios Inc. violated Marvel's trademark characters in their game ``City of Heroes.'' Marvel seeks unspecified damages and an injunction against the two companies to stop using its characters.

The personal computer game enables players to design superheroes' look and abilities and then battle against other players' characters in a virtual city. Like similar so-called massively multiplayer role-playing games where thousands of players can be playing simultaneously at any given time, ``City of Heroes'' claims to offer a myriad of combinations so that no two players' characters are exactly the same.

But in its lawsuit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court, Marvel argues that the game's character creation engine easily allows players to design characters that are virtual copies of its own superheros, including ``The Incredible Hulk.''

The company singles out a game feature for creating ``a gigantic, green, 'science-based tanker'-type hero that moves and behaves nearly identically'' to the ``Hulk.'' Players can also create a ``mutant-based'' hero powers and a costume nearly identical to Marvel's ``Wolverine,'' according to the suit.

The New York-based company also took issue with the ability of players to go so far as to name their superhero creations after Marvel comic book characters.

Marvel claims the firms' are responsible because the game is played on servers operated by the companies, raising the question of whether a company is responsible for their customers' actions on its computer server.

Marvel also claims the companies have disrupted its ``existing and future'' business prospects for licensing its characters in video games similar to ``City of Heroes.''

An e-mail sent to NCSoft seeking comment was not immediately returned after-hours Thursday. No number was listed for Cryptic Studios.

The Marvel lawsuit appears to be the first to raise this question in the scope of an online game. But early copyright infringement lawsuits brought by recording companies against pioneer file-sharing service Napster successfully argued Napster was liable for its customers' sharing of music online because they could do so only by accessing the company's computer system.

The argument can still be made that "City of Heroes'' is only empowering users to the same degree that an establishment like Kinkos enables customers to make paper copies of copyrighted material, said Fred von Lohmann, senior intellectual property attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

``Is it a violation of copyright to make up a character in the virtual world or is that fair use?'' von Lohmann said. ``This is really untested ground in the courts.''

Everyone, this is a rumor...

A well placed source within IBM let something slip to me the other day... and he doesn’t know I’m writing this... but I just can’t keep this in. This person who shall remain nameless is working on the physical architecture of the CPU for the PSIII and the Xbox II. Wow I said what’s that like? Then he drops the bomb... he says "Well I shouldn’t be telling you this but the CPU’s we are selling Sony and Microsoft are the SAME!!!" It turns out that what IBM is doing is moving around parts on the CPU to make them look different but the technology is the same!!! Also he said they are hoping that Sony and Microsoft don’t figure it out...

Now again, this is a rumor... so no Slashdoting, this is just for you guys...

Stay tuned...

The thing that bugs me about the City of Heroes thing isn't that the game engine doesn't specifically deny every copyrighted and trademarked character in existence from being reproduced, but why anyone gives a flying fornication. In all honesty, does CoH's making it easier to express one's love for Marvel's intellectual property devalue that intellectual property? That's like saying TDA should be shut down because you're letting people see the promos in other places.

That's a good question, probably the REAL question needing to be answered by the courts (at least to Marvel's satisfaction), because that's one of Marvel's main complaints:
the news article wrote:

So why would you pay for a different game using licensed versions of their superheroes when you can obtain an equivalent for free already?
Kinda' sounds familiar when you replace "superheroes" with... oh, I dunno, "anime" or "songs", doesn't it? Wink

A patent infringement case has been filed for the patent, "Method and Apparatus for Spherical Planning," which could affect every 3D videogame ever made, reports GameDAILY BIZ. Texas-based law firm McKool Smith has sued 12 major game publishers, including Electronic Arts, Take-Two Interactive, Ubisoft, Activision, Atari, THQ, Vivendi Universal Games, Sega, Square Enix, Tecmo, LucasArts and Namco Hometek. The law firm is threatening legal action against several small companies as well.

McKool Smith claims that the defendants infringed on their patent, originally filed in March 1988 for a specific method of displaying 3D images on a monitor. The complaint doesn’t request any specific damages at this time.

Eight of the 12 gaming firms are being defended by the same law firm, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, LLP.

Neither side has made any public statements about the case.
