I think that's one of the better endings I've seen. The conflict was (at least temporarily) ended, with little use of Deus Ex Machina, and without bringing anyone out of character too much.
Overall, I think the series is very good. The details of it are good (Each time it showed the muzzle of a gun (quite a lot!) I thought "rifling"), the story is engaging, the characters are uncommonly well-developed, and Vash's ideology is socially acceptable. _________________ Krogoth uses Berserk.

SPOILERS If you havent watched the whole series dont read
=======
It was nice to see an ending where the Hero didnt die. But overall I was left wanting by the final episode. I thought the resolution with Wolfwood came as a huge surprise. I should have caught the reference to the peacemaker being his cross to bear. It seemed a real shame to build Millie up havomg her finally get Wolfwood then kill him off. Plus it killed any chances for a sequel. Did he die in the manga to?
Now to move onto the answers and some of the questions. So Vash is one of the people stuck in time. Which the humans used to power their ships. Early on you see on in the series you see Vash pour a bottle of liquor over a blacony in front of a fairly light and say
"I know your tired. But keep trying"
Plus it helps to explain how he knew the ancient technology in the crashed ship in one of the first wolfwood episodes.
The city destroying gun that is his arm, sorry angel gun I think its called?, bugs me. Because Needles made it. And if Vash wanted to break with past why didnt he just lose the gun? Needles says "Im sorry brother but its only at 30% power". This doesnt make any sense either because the fairy lights and the power for his gun are one in the same right? And if the fairy's in the lights are human sized, as seen in two episodes, how do you shrink one down to size of a Colt long 45?
I know Im nitpicking. But Trigun is one of the best animes I have seen recently and has me thinking almost as much as Bebop did. Was the oasis that needles at created by him or the only one on the planet? Sure looks like he created it. And if he did wouldn't Vash be able to do the same thing or was needles exploiting one of the ships technology.
What promises did Needles make to Legato and the others to have him join his side? Legato wouldnt join for money. But his hatred of humanity would be enough I guess. As for the others I guess Legato could have promised them money to.
Sorry like I said as a fan of the series just want to get closure.

At least I'm not the only one... I was left with a feeling of, "Now, what?"

Maybe you just answered your own question. (I really don't know)

I believe Knives was using the plants' capabilities, which were hinted at in "Little Arcadia" (episode 14), where the old folks' property was affected by a "leak" from the local plant.

Me, too. But I think the manga is still ongoing, so there's no known end in sight. (Feel free to correct me) _________________ "When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."- C.S. Lewis

although i have yet to read any of the manga, i've heard that wolfwood is indeed still alive...this has caused speculation on how and if more trigun anime could be made, whether or not they could continue from what we've seen or if they'd have to start the story all over again... (this is pure speculation, don't for one second think i'm saying there's more of the anime being made)
i'll agree that the ending was very open, but the creators of the anime went ahead of the manga about halfway through the series, so perhaps they didn't want to touch on an ending that the manga was eventually going to get to...i kinda liked how it was done though, leaving the door open for more, whether or not that actually happens...

because then knives woulda killed vash with his angel arm, basically flattening vash in the gunfight and killing the suspensful feel...

i'm trying to remember what i was told about this, but it's kind of hazy...i think that the guns each brother has enable them to tap into their energy that creates the reaction (since they are plants)...since other plants are contained within the glass things that use their energy, the guns act in a similar matter or something...
...that didn't come out right at all, i'll get back to you on it...

my speculation was always that knives sent legato and the gung-ho guns to their death...after all, he hated humans so much that i find it hard for him to cooperate with a select few without some sort of payoff...still, i can't really answer how he convinced legato to join...

i hear ya...trigun as a series opens up so many questions that it's impossible to catch everything in one or two viewings...i think that's partially why i like it so much since it's possible to pick up on something new every time... _________________ "Life's a journey, not a destination..." -Aerosmith ('Amazing')

Remember the fairy plants are human sized people like Vash. He is basically one of the fairy's released from the plant. Not created by the plant. REM was a mother fiqure to Vash not a love interest. And although they show her ship exploding. They never show the corpse. I would guess she reappears in the manga and gets truly killed off.
Now the way to talk away the guns power is that they were made with power from the fairy plants and not fairy's within themselves.
So how do we bring back Wolfwood? What will the girls report to their boss about Mr Vash sir? Who gets to keep the cat?
Something I forgot to mention in the first post. Frank, i forget his last night, the gunsmith from one of the early episodes repairs Vash's gun. I know brain was friend but you think he would go
"Hey WTF is this?!"

If your time table it right then its basicly impossible for Vash to be based on Kenshin unless and this is a big UNLESS they changed vash's character at the last moment. Aniamted series*snip*

I'm going to interject here. Both animated series are based on manga series, so I think the objective place to make the comparison is their respective dates of first publication, which I don't happen to have (someone else feel free to jump in here, PLEASE ). The possibility remains open.
:edit: and Green Bird beats me to my point while I'm typing it. grrr. :
Okay, did a little reasearch here:
It seems Kenshin was a manga in 1988, while Trigun was a Manga in 1993.
The creator of the manga always had respect for Kenshin and wanted a Character to have the same morals. So there for, Vash's Personally was based on Kenshin. Nothing else though.
Oh, and Nobu there's a Hypehn between Green and Bird. Please take notes. _________________ I shake like a toothache,

I'm sure that I'm not alone in saying shut the fuck up greenbird. though the dates were nice and dandy. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

Why? All he did was replace the cylinder and repair the clockwork mechanism (that's what it's called) in the trigger group. Something any competent gunsmith could do. He wouldn't have to touch those side panels where the "special parts" are. _________________ "When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."- C.S. Im thinking automatic not a revolver. Repairing an automatic would mean the top was a slide. But in this case its not your right. I need to watch more closely.

Actually it appears to be a Colt .45 it even says so at one time on the side of the gun.
It just has all of those fun little add ons and stuff. _________________ The Mighty King of Bad Ideas

adult swim changed their schedule again this past week, allowing trigun to air on sunday nights (technically monday) at 1am in addition to it's weekday run...it's possible that your missing episode aired then and you inadvertently missed it...
[added a few minutes later]
just to warn you guys, the current schedule for june has trigun leaving the block on the 12th, five episodes before the current run would finish...it looks like it'll return sometime in july, but it'll likely start over again, so you may wanna do some digging to find those remaining episodes... _________________ "Life's a journey, not a destination..." -Aerosmith ('Amazing')
