friday night:

i missed the beginning, but it seems a group of assassins are taking down imperialist leaders with shady pasts...while some may find this good, obviously the taking of life isn't approved of by kenshin and the others...we're introduced to sensei, a friend of sano's and former swordsman who's dropped his old ways and teaches kids to read and write for free despite his own financial troubles...the leader of the assassin group turns out to be the sensei's former apprentice, and convinces him to join them in a job, threatening the safety of his students if refused...sano overhears and with the help of kenshin, stops him from taking up the sword again, but the group gets away unharmed...

while my original thoughts were "another group of assassins?", the inclusion of sensei added a nice touch, with being able to see another kind person atoning for his past in the war...sano gets some more character development here, and the comedic opening with megumi and the gang (especially yahiko's line about "that's how they show they love each other" and sano's reaction) was great...a very good episode with a bit of everything...

I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but they skipped an episode of Kenshin (Another reason to get the dvds) The episode was about megumi and her being a doctor. It wasn't any fabulous ep, but still you MUST see them all. They cut it because the enemies Kenshin and Sano were fighting had Swastikas (I hoped I spelled it right) on their clothing. Just thought I would bring that to everyone's attention. Hopefully this doesn't mean they will edit other eps.

i was wondering about that, because the episode scheduled to air today aired on friday...perhaps it was a mishap with the tapes on cn's part or something, unless something (perhaps the swastikas) was deemed too extreme for it to air on tv...

if they're going to skip whole episodes more than likely they will only do it if it's fairly worthless in the overall plot of the series/arc. This ep could have so much to edit that they haven't been able to finish it in time to air it, but might be shown during the next run through. You don't know why they didn't show it, you only know they didn't. Speculate all you want but you very well could be wrong; same goes for my guess.

it's been so long spook, i can't really remember enough about that episode to recall possible reasons for it not to air (assuming that edits had something to do with it), but speculation is fun ya know, and i'm sure we'll hear of some sort of explanation down the line...

monday night:

friday's plot continues, as the assassin is given his next assignment...we later find that the man giving orders plans to kill him after this job is complete...sanoske, karou, and yahiko stay back with sensei, while kenshin goes ahead to prevent the assassination...the others eventually catch up and we get to kenshin's duel, only to realize that the assassin's much-hyped technique is really nothing more than a simple strike, which kenshin easily foils...the senator who ordered the kill is caught, and sensei prevents the assassin from committing suicide, teaching atonement as his final lesson...

while i could see disappointment in how the fight at the end was done, i thought it as a unique plot twist...humor took a backseat to the action in this episode, but it was handled well and a nice change of pace from the usual fare...i wonder when/if cn's gonna realize that their schedule's a day behind the episodes being aired though?

I know we'll hear some sort of reason eventually, but people generally come up with some of the worst case scenario reasons that always blame the studio for being overly worried and protective and fearing being sured and crap when it's usually something much simpler.

tuesday night:

the kenshin group runs across a human cannonball stunt at a local festival and checks it out...yahiko is taken at first glace by the daughter that actually gets shot out of a cannon and we soon learn of another show that's suffering due to this one's current popularity...the owner of this show lent out money to the girl's father, a former employee, to take a stab at this independant venture, and a clause in the contract would force them to return to work for the owner if they can't pay them back...

being that the owner's a bad guy, he uses his employees to prevent the father/daughter team from paying back the cash...the father gets seriously injured in the process and can't perform a show which would get back the money owed...yahiko takes charge in trying to help out, but when he's forced to find more gunpowder, karou, sanoske, and kenshin have to hold down the fort, with the paying customers getting restless from waiting...we get some humorous sequences from the three, which buys just enough time for yahiko to return, though the owner and his cronies trail behind...kenshin takes care of these guys with an umbrella, giving the impression that it's all part of an act, and the show is saved...

obviously the humor is what draws me to this episode, especially the antics of the three trying to entertain the crowd...from kenshin's balancing act to karou's knife-throwing gag, there was plenty to laugh about...the real kicker was the hiten mitsarougi umbrella techniques though, especially how kenshin was in "acting" mode taking out those guys...a fun episode all around...

wednesday night:

after preventing a robbery at the akabeko, yahiko starts to tire of the kamiya kashin style and desires to use a real sword as opposed to his wooden one...the fake battousai from the first episode makes another return, hoping to exact his revenge on kenshin by hiring two brothers who are apparently good at the whole "killing" thing...he entices yahiko to bring a "real" sword to fight him, and yahiko takes kenshin's reverse-blade sword without his knowing, only to realize it's a trap to lure kenshin into a fight without his blade...

kenshin arrives to meet the brothers, and initially holds his own, though it's soon realized that without his sword, kenshin can only buy time...yahiko meanwhile gets out of his ropes in a painful way and gets the reverse-blade back to kenshin just in time...kenshin + reverse-blade = unstoppable, and yahiko realizes his mistake...

although i'm sure anyone could see a plot like this coming a mile away, it was still handled pretty well...yahiko's ego obviously blinded him to the trials of using a metal sword, though he was barely able to persevere...

while i could complain about the blood being removed from yahiko's arms when he was cutting the ropes, they kept the marks there, so that's enough to get the idea...i'm surprised that one of the funniest scenes ever was left in, that being yahiko's "shoulder block to groin kick", and the "symbols" of said shot...

...now to catch up on trigun...

thursday night:

we're introduced to yutaro, a spoiled kid about yahiko's age, whose father was a great swordsman and who has also inherited a vast amount of land...kenshin and the gang are taking a vacation here, as dr. gensai's sister works for the young kid...yutaro wants to follow his father's footsteps, and when he runs across rytayuu (i know that's spelled wrong) who saves him from a bunch of theives, he takes him into his home as his sensei...there's more than meets the eye, however, as rytayuu's lackies begin walking around the property, storing weapons and planning something big...kenshin encounters them and finds out their purpose: a revolution against those in power in hopes of restoring the importance of swordsman and fighters from the past war...when kenshin refuses to join, he is attacked by four fighters, and while holding his own, gets distracted by yutaro, who gets knocked off the cliff...kenshin's pinned to the ground as the credits roll...

"ah, a cliffhanger worthy of inuyasha" was the first thing to come to my mind...yutaro's an interesting character, and karou's comparison of him to yahiko seems valid...obviously i'm gonna bring up the hotsprings scene, since i'm surprised they left in as much as they did...

i'm curious as to why kenshin had a down facial expression during the pan of them eating earlier though, maybe something was cut or maybe i missed something?

not a stellar episode, but it sets us up for the coming events tomorrow...

Yep, I didn't catch that either. Thanks Zechs. But BLOODY HELL I hate cliffhangers. Sure, they make the series better by adding tension and suspense and making you feel like you HAVE to watch, but dispite al that they still piss me off . . .

ah, that actually does make sense then...thanks zechs...

friday night:

kenshin snaps and gets out of the fight in order to save yutaro from drowning...yutaro comes to still believing in his sensei's good intentions, and while he wants to go back to his mansion, yahiko won't let him until he can get past him in a sword fight...yutaro gets crushed, and karou offers to train him in the kamiya kashin style...yutaro gives himself three days to train enough to beat yahiko, and the training commences...

meanwhile, ryjuuta (my spelling for today) gathers the best warriors from japan into the mansion and lays out his plans against the government...we see the army has caught on, with the more familiar officier seeking out kenshin once again...yutaro hears the news and runs off ahead to see his sensei, only to catch a glimpse of a battle as ryjuuta's men take down the first wave of officers outside the mansion...

of course, we gotta wait 'till monday to see what unfolds from there...

a little bit of everything here, from kenshin's snapping in the beginning to a duel between the boys and yutaro's subsequent training, not to mention the beginning of the fighting between the police and ryjuuta's men...everything seems to be coming to a head, and with kenshin not too far behind, the next episode's looking pretty damn good...

Hmm, cut that down to just the hit, the actual nut being cracked, and Big-guy's (forget his name) face, and that would make a KILLER avatar.
