Sony's 'supercomputer on a chip' debuts
Highly anticipated Cell microprocesser aims at digital home
Reuters
Updated: 3:53 p.m. ET Feb. 7, 2005

SAN FRANCISCO - The highly anticipated microchip that will power the Sony PlayStation 3 game system made its debut on Monday, as IBM, Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. showed off the inner workings of a chip intended to run a new generation of electronics.

Dubbed a “supercomputer on a chip, the Cell microprocessor has until now been long on ambition but short on specifics. At a technical conference in San Francisco, the three electronics giants described a chip that could provide ten times the performance of the latest PC chips and churn through many tasks at once.

Aimed squarely at the “digital home market highly sought-after by Intel Corp., the Cell initiative, which has been in development since 2001, is viewed by some as a formidable, if fledgling, competitor to the world’s largest chip maker.

While IBM showed off prototypes of the Cell processor here, Intel demonstrated that the Cell chip’s grand goals will not go unchallenged, announcing that it had completed initial product runs of its own “dual-core chips, which have the brains of two chips in one.

The Cell chip, developed jointly by Sony, IBM and Toshiba, will appear in the PlayStation 3, the follow-on to Sony’s successful video game console that is expected to be released next year. Masakazu Suzuoki, the vice president of microprocessor development at Sony Computer Entertainment, said Sony is “trying to give enough time to game publishers to write new titles to take advantage of Cell’s features.

Cell will likely also be marketed as an ideal technology for televisions and supercomputers, and everything in between, though it is still far too early to determine Cell’s chances for success in those markets.

Kevin Krewell, the editor in chief of Microprocessor Report has called Cell the best chip technology of 2004, but said the key for the chip’s success will be the software that is written to take advantage of the chip’s features. “The biggest issue is going to be programming, Krewell said.

Cell is based on the core of IBM’s existing Power processor line, and is designed to work with a variety of software packages, including Linux, the companies said. The chip will have nearly a quarter-billion transistors and be built on 90-nanometer manufacturing technology. It will work with a memory technology developed by Rambus Inc.

Inside the chip, eight processing units will churn through data at speeds above 4 gigahertz, or billions of cycles per second, ahead of even the fastest chips from Intel.

“It sets a new performance standard, said Jim Kahle, the director of technology for Cell development and an IBM fellow.

Sony and IBM have called Cell a strong technology for high-powered workstations and supercomputers, with multiple Cell chips able to work as a cluster.

50 Cent officially in the game
Teaser trailer for "50 Cent: Bulletproof" credited to "Vivendi Universal" debuts on MTV.com; description reveals the rapper declined "a lead role" in San Andreas.

Just a few days after the rumors about a 50 Cent video game began to reach critical mass, official proof of the games existence--and provenance--has surfaced. Today, a teaser trailer for the game, whose official title is "50 Cent: Bulletproof," premiered on MTV.com The title is especially appropriate, as the rapper was shot nine times in real life and miraculously survived.

Following a warning saying "Don't watch if violence freaks you out," the trailer for Bulletproof begins with a cut-scene of the gangsta rapper and Eminem protégé following a crime lord into a skyscraper. Decked out in typical street-tough gear, including a shirt for his band G-Unit, Cent proceeds to shoot dead most of the arch-criminal's retinue of bodyguards with a pistol and a machine gun. When he runs out of ammo, the rapper takes out the remaining thugs mano-a-mano, punching, kicking, and bludgeoning them before turning their own weapons upon them. More....

Alll I can say is...bleh, How many time do we need to hear he was shot nine times...

Games for tweens get new rating
'E10+' aims to broaden titles available to preteen set

The Associated Press
Updated: 7:07 p.m. ET March 2, 2005

BELMONT, Calif. - The ratings board for the video game industry announced a new category Wednesday for children approaching their teens.

The "E10+" category should help fill a gap between games rated "E" for everyone, which some children outgrow, and "T" for teen, which are too violent or mature for some parents' tastes.

It might bring relief to households like the Pattons, who live in the San Francisco suburb of Belmont.

A big fan of Mario Bros. video games, 9-year-old Nicholas Patton is itching to play "Super Smash Bros. Melee." But to his dismay, his parents have declared the "T"-rated game off-limits. The disagreement has sparked incessant requests and some tense moments.

With the new category, the game, which includes a little more violence than other Mario-based games, might have gotten a permissible "E10+" instead. At the least, it could bring more choices to parents and their young children, who often don't see eye-to-eye when it comes to the form of entertainment that has infiltrated millions of American households.

"In that age group, you're left in the middle," said the boy's father, Paul Patton. "Unless you're into the sports games, the "E" games aren't that exciting anymore for him, and as for the "T" ones — your concept of reality isn't totally there yet."

Ratings, which range from "EC" for early childhood to "AO" for adults only, are meant to be a guide and certainly are not always in line with parents' views.

But the Entertainment Software Rating Board, a self-regulatory body set up by the gaming industry, believes the new "E10+" label will come in handy for parents, especially because the organization has seen an increasing number of games getting a "T" rating, perhaps because of mild violence, when the titles could be considered suitable for a 10-year-old.

"We found we were putting games we thought were preteen in the teen category," said Patricia Vance, president of the board. "And with the levels of sophistication in game play and graphics now, we felt there was enough nuance in the range of games to warrant a new category between 'E' and 'T.'"

The "E10+" rating means the video game may be suitable for children 10 and older. The title might contain moderate amounts of cartoon, fantasy or mild violence; mild profanity or minimally suggestive themes.

Likely candidates might be racing games with more extreme car crashes or games with super heroes or cartoon characters — cute as they may be — involved in some fighting, Vance said.

Though existing games won't be reclassified, ones that might have qualified as "E10+" include "Super Smash Bros. Melee," "Shrek," "Ratchet and Clank," and "Jak II," she said.

Two upcoming games already set to receive the new rating are "Donkey Kong Jungle Beat," in which the gorillas have to fight each other a bit more than other Donkey Kong games, and a game based on Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Vance said the latter is "on the scary side — something you might not want a 6-year-old to see but nothing that most preteens can't handle."

The underlying theory is that not all children are created equal: There are very distinct developmental differences in the ages of 6, 10, and 13.

Just as in real life, "you don't go from child to teen in one leap," said Ralph Lopez, a Cornell clinical pediatrics professor with whom the rating board consulted.

What counts as humorous for a 6-year-old will often be passe for a 10-year-old, Lopez said. A car hitting a tree could be terrifying for the younger set but humorous for a tween.

Another difference comes when the line between fantasy and reality is better understood, usually during the teen years. Hence, any game that depicts real injuries — versus unrealistic physical recoveries — gets at least a "T" rating.

Language is also a key issue, and the rating board examines not only the script of games but accompanying song lyrics.

The rating board recruits people — without any game industry ties — to review video games before they hit store shelves.

About 53 percent of the games sold in the United States in 2004 were rated "E," according to the board, though data analyzed by GamerMetrics and IGN.com show that only 46 percent of all games sold in 2004 were rated "E," with the bulk of sales in "T" and "M."

A random, telephone-based survey conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates last year found that about 70 percent of parents refer to the ratings every time they buy a game.

Count the Pattons among them. Their generous collection of 50-plus video games for their two sons, ages 5 and 9, are all rated "E" — except for one "T" game that a relative gave to Nicholas as a gift and is being stored in a closet until the fifth grader comes of age.

Among their concerns: limiting exposure to violence and more mature language.

Sure, even some Disney movies now include words that were unacceptable on the big screen 30 years ago, but it's another matter if the word is repeated 45 times in 30 minutes, Nicholas' father said.

"I don't feel we're rigid," said his mother, Kim Patton, "but we do feel we have to have limits. Nicholas has the whole rest of his life to be exposed to things."

Am I the only fanboy slightly offended that they didn't mention in the article that the Gamecube's successor will also show at E3?

San Andreas rated AO, Take-Two suspends production

Following an investigation, ESRB slaps dreaded 18-and-over rating on controversy-wracked bestseller; Take-Two lowers guidance, still blames "unauthorized third party modification."

After percolating for weeks, the Hot Coffee controversy has finally boiled over. Today, Take-Two Interactive announced that as the result of an investigation by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will now bear an AO for Adults Only rating. Previously, the game was rated M for Mature.

In its statement, Take-Two outlined its response to the commerce-limiting AO rating. "[Take-Two subsidiary] Rockstar Games has ceased manufacturing of the current version of the title and will begin working on a version of the game with enhanced security to prevent the 'hot coffee' modifications," it read. "This version will retain the original ESRB M-rating and is expected to be available during the Company's fourth fiscal quarter." The quarter in question runs from August to October, 2005. The company will also release a patch for the currently available PC version of the game which will lock out the sex minigames.

Or, you know, they could just remove the code that was enabled in the first place. You know, like they should've done before releasing the game.
Still, even the sex scene seems to me to be about as bad as seeing Neo's and Trinity's asses, and is as surely as gratuitous. Why should a video game have a higher rating than a movie for the same content?

I would argue that the GTA games all suck and are devoid of long-term gameplay experiences and that it only sells product off of shock value and controversy, but all I really want is simple damn Lemmings game.

Are you tired of hearing all the biased, anti-video game news being spewed all over the headlines because they're "a plague on our youth" and such?

Well, we finally have some research that indicates that politicians are full of crap. Very Happy

What's interesting is that this evidence comes directly from the Department of Justice.

ESRB Adversary and Lawyer Jack Thompson Targets Killer 7

Once again everyones favorite Florida attorney is at it again. And as the title indicates his next target is Capcom's Killer 7.
Quote:
Killer 7, released by Capcom on July 7, challenges players to become seven deadly assassins. The game, which was developed in Japan, features stylized cel-shaded graphics and a story drowned in adult themes, spoken profanity, violence, and sexual situations. The game was rated M by the ESRB for "blood and gore, intense violence, sexual themes and strong language."
In the e-mail, Thompson cites IGN.com's review of Killer 7 and its description of "full-blown sex sequences" as a primary reason why the game should receive an AO rating. Major retailers including Wal-Mart do not sell AO-rated games, which would mean that such a rating might have an adverse impact on sales of Killer 7.

You can read the full article here. From what people have said this is nothing like Hot Coffee. The "full-blown sex sequences" he is talking about is this
Quote:
The sexual scenes in question showcase a fully clothed wheelchair-bound man pleasuring a straddling woman, who is also fully clothed. Although she moans, indicating a sexual orgasm, neither nudity nor intercourse is illustrated in the cut-scene. The same scene in a movie today might warrant only a PG-13 or, worst, R-rating.

Report: Microsoft's Xbox 360 to cost $299
By Martyn Williams, IDG News Service

Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 will be available in two versions costing US$300 and $400 when it is launched later this year, the company said Wednesday. In Europe it will cost €300 and €400 respectively and in the U.K. will cost £210 and £280 respectively.

The announcement, which was made at the Games Convention event in Leipzig, Germany, fills in one of the last and most important pieces of information about the console.

Capable of high-definition video, the Xbox 360 is considerably more powerful than any gaming console available at present. At a recent event in Tokyo the company showed previews of several Xbox 360 games and all featured stunning graphics that bring a new level of realism to computer gaming.

At the heart of the console will be a three-core Power PC chip custom-produced for the console by IBM Corp. and a graphics chip from ATI Technologies Inc. It also has a 12X dual-layer DVD-ROM drive and the more expensive version includes a 20GB hard-disk drive, wireless controller, headset, Ethernet cable and wireless remote control.

All of the accessories included in the pricier package, dubbed the premium edition, will also be available as individual add-ons to the basic system.

With the major specifications and the price set, the only other big announcement awaited from Microsoft is the actual launch date. It’s promised to put the Xbox 360 on sale in North America, Europe and Japan before the end of this year. Japanese pricing details will be announced at the Tokyo Game Show next month.

That launch schedule should put the console in the shops several months before Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. launches its PlayStation 3 console. The PlayStation 3 has an equally impressive specification sheet that includes an eight-core processor that boasts a total performance of 218G FLOPS (floating point operations per second) — 35 times the performance of the PlayStation 2.

Combined with an Nvidia Corp. graphics system the Sony console should pack about double the power of the Xbox 360, although how much of that can be translated into a better gaming experience will depend on the game programmers.

Moving towards launch, earlier Wednesday Microsoft announced it has lined up three companies to manufacture the console. They are Singapore’s Flextronics International Ltd. and Taiwan’s Wistron Corp., both of which produce the current-generation Xbox console, and Canada’s Celestica Inc. All three companies will produce the Xbox 360 at their respective factories in China, said Microsoft.

w00t! Life is good! Very Happy

Sam & Max To Return (No, Really!)

It appears that the immensely popular Sam & Max adventure series, which has been threatening to make a comeback more times than John Travolta's career, is finally returning to the gaming world. Steve Purcell (the original creator of Sam & Max) announced at the end of his keynote speech at "The Future of Digital Entertainment" conference that Telltale Games has received the go-ahead to develop another Sam & Max game.

The new game will be completely original and will have nothing whatsoever to do with with the canceled Lucasarts "Sam & Max: Freelance Police" title. So why after all this time have Sam & Max finally returned? It appears that Lucasarts lost the rights to the series and creator Purcell, who was familiar with Telltale from their days together in Lucasarts, went to Telltale to answer the legion of fans who have been begging for another Sam & Max game.

Not much is known about the game right now, but what is known is that Telltale Games will release the game in episodic format, much like their upcoming "Bone" series whose first episode is due for release later this fall.

This is the third attempt to make a follow up to 1993's "Sam & Max Hit the Road", the first one being an Xbox-bound action/adventure title from now-defunct game studio Infinite Machine, and the second of course being LucasArts' ill-fated attempt at a sequel, "Sam & Max Freelance Police". Both of those died before having a chance to live, but here's hoping third time's the charm![/img]

I'm not really sure what to say about this. It does look like it could be pretty interesting, but at the same time it look like it could be a very bad idea.
