The dub isn't that bad and yes, there will be uncut dvd's. If its true that there will be 6 eps a disc, then I might purchase this series unlike Inuyasha at 3 eps a disc.

Ferrous Cranus is utterly impervious to reason, persuasion and new ideas, and when engaged in battle he will not yield an inch in his position regardless of its hopelessness. Though his thrusts are decisively repulsed, his arguments crushed in every detail and his defenses demolished beyond repair he will remount the same attack again and again with only the slightest variation in tactics. Sometimes out of pure frustration Philosopher will try to explain to him the failed logistics of his situation, or Therapist will attempt to penetrate the psychological origins of his obduracy, but, ever unfathomable, Ferrous Cranus cannot be moved.

Episode 4 was the best one yet, great job on kakashi's voice. They keep improving. I just cant see why people hate on this dub so much.

I want to open by calling jackfrost to task. It seems sort of impolite to dredge up material from two weeks ago, but I just got here, and noticed this, and I can't believe no one has called him on it yet.
jackfrost wrote:
The Toonami dub of Naruto DOES suck... big time. When the voice actors in a cartoon/anime can't even pronounce the MAIN CHARACTER'S name right, the show's headed nowhere fast. His name is pronounced na-RU-to, NOT NA-ru-to! I swear, Tom the robot host of Toonami was the only one on Cartoon Network saying it right, and he's not even in the stupid cartoon!!!

When I initially read this I thought he was making the sarcastic, categorically incorrect sort of statement you make when you're trying to satirize a group of people (here, Narutards who are evidentally a lot less informed about their favorite show than they think they are). Apparently not the case: he IS one of those people.
NA-ru-to is the correct emphasis. The voice actors are, as close as could realistically be expected without trying to teach all of them to reproduce the Japanese 'r', all pronouncing the name correctly. TOM is pronouncing it wrong. Go dust off your fansubs and listen carefully. Now, it's perfectly alright to mispronounce it. 'na-RU-to' is a more natural emphasis to the American ear, when trying to string those syllables together; I pronounce it that way myself, when I'm talking about the show without thinking. But if you're going to make something like that a sticking point in an argument, you damn sure better know what you're talking about.

Regarding the quality of the Naruto dub: it's decent, about as well performed as one could expect. It could certainly be a lot worse. I do appreciate the translation decision to keep the clearly Japanese atmosphere of the show prevalent, in general doing a much more pleasing job than the manga translation ("Art of the Doppleganger"? Feh). Giving Naruto a speech idiosyncracy was a nice touch. Some people are bound to find Naruto's constant repitition of "Believe it" obnoxious, but then, ending every other sentence in "-ttebayo" is really equivalently annoying. In general, the actors in the principle roles seem to have a good feel for their characters' basic personalities. Dave Wittenberg seems to have nailed Kakashi's perpetually non-plussed attitude, for example; we'll see how he does with more serious dialogue in the upcoming arc.
But there isn't really anything that stands out about the dub, either. Nothing that makes it truly exceptional. I profer that the reason for that is there isn't really anything truly exceptional about Naruto. It could probably be a little better, but there comes a point where you can't make a show better than it intrinsically is just through a dub. For all its success, Naruto is successful because it effectively recycles the standard themes of shounen anime--friendship, teamwork, doing your best, never giving up, etc.--into a shiny, entertaining, colorful package. With ninjas. All of the plot movement in the show, (and this is more obvious for the filler arcs) is really oriented towards a single goal: to show Naruto (and occasionally friends), the underdog, overcoming circumstances and adversity to succeed against the expectations of his peers (but of course not against our own), because he exemplifies these qualities.
I think in large part, the problem people who take great offense to the dub have is that they've allowed the show to mean more to them than it really should. They delude themselves into thinking that Naruto is somehow this paragon of theme and meaning, when in reality it's just a kid's show, a tool to teach children, especially boys, valuable life lessons. As much as Naruto is fun for adults to watch (moreso at sometimes than others, and there are some expertly crafted moments), it isn't particularly deep. To admit this to oneself, especially for people who have become unreasonably attached to the show, can be difficult. There is a stigma that is (perhaps wrongly) associated with being called a child. It is because of this that such people react so violently to even the smallest injury, when a distribution company recognizes their chosen idol for what it is, and markets it accordingly.

"No I will not have sex with you."

Damn, let's all jump on the bandwagon then . . .

Keep in mind hte newbie is nice because he EXPLAINS his thoughts. He wrote more than 10 words. That's what's awesome. Not the fact that his views match ours.

So lets all write a message in under 5 words about how we agree that he's awesome. Because that's the cool thing to do. And not entirely ironic as to what makes this guy awesome, oh no, not ironic at all.
