NEW YORK, June 10, 2009 -- 20th Century Fox Television, the animation powerhouse that brought "Family Guy" back from the dead five years ago, has done it again: Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's brilliantly subversive animated sci-fi comedy "Futurama" will return to production on 26 new half-hour episodes more than six years after the series aired its last original episode. The move comes on the heels of the series' blockbuster performance on DVD and on COMEDY CENTRAL; the announcement was made today by Twentieth Century Fox Television Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden, and David Bernath, senior vice president, programming for COMEDY CENTRAL.

"Futurama" was a staple of Fox's Sunday night animation block from 1999 to 2003 before ceasing production on original episodes. In June 2006, COMEDY CENTRAL acquired the rights to the existing 72 episodes of the series, which the channel began airing in January 2008, and four recently-produced extended length "Futurama" adventures: "Bender's Big Score," "The Beast with a Billion Backs," "Bender's Game" and "Into the Wild Green Yonder," which enjoyed enormous success both on COMEDY CENTRAL and in DVD release. This new deal marks the show's return to episodic series production on original episodes. "Futurama" becomes only the second series in the history of the medium to go back into production based on the strength of its DVD sales and repeat airings on cable.

The new episodes will be available in mid 2010 to be shown on COMEDY CENTRAL. Twentieth Century Fox Television retains the option to license the original runs of the new episodes to a broadcast network.

Our prayers have been answered! Seriously, I always thought Futrama was another example of Groening and company's comedic genius. The show combines original, groundbreaking writers who come up with great plots and jokes who contributed to the Simpsons with the unique, sarcastic scripting talents that have become iconic of Futurama. I love the whole voice acting cast, particularly Billy West. He just delivers his lines with impeccable timeing and inflection. It's like everything he says is funny, even if it's the most simple line. But that's the way alot of the voice actors deliver lines. My point, this is one of the greatest moments in animated history, and is just awsome for all the fans. Can't wait.

AW HELL NAW! Evil or Very Mad

July 17, 2009 - Is Futurama being recast? Several outlets, including EW.com, are reporting that apparently 20th Century Fox, who produce the series, are currently auditioning actors to take over all of the major roles on the series, replacing Billy West ("Fry", "Hubert J. Farnsworth", "Zoidberg"), Katey Sagal ("Leela"), John DiMaggio ("Bender"), Maurice LaMarche ("Kif Kroker"), and Tress MacNeille ("Mom").

IGN TV contacted 20th Century Fox and were told, "We love the Futurama voice performers and absolutely wanted to use them, but unfortunately, we could not meet their salary demands. While replacing these talented actors will be difficult, the show must go on. We are confident that we will find terrific new performers to give voice to Matt [Groening] and David [X. Cohen]'s brilliantly subversive characters."

With the show being brought back, certainly it wouldn't be surprising if the voice actors asked for raises – and considering Futurama is now being produced for Comedy Central, not FOX, it's also possible those salary requests were too high for 20th Century Fox and Comedy Central to justify, since cable series typically operate at lower budgets than network series.

However, there are some interesting things to consider here. Several weeks ago, the details of the Futurama panel at Comic-Con were revealed, and they read:

"Futurama: Life or Death?! BE A PART OF SCI-FI HISTORY! Join Executive Producers Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, and stars Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio and Maurice LaMarche for high-stakes thrills as a top-ranking Fox executive decides live, on stage, whether Futurama will make yet another triumphant return, or whether it is gone forever! The very fate of Futurama hangs in the balance! Paramedics will be standing by in case the intense excitement causes any panelists to collapse. Raucous celebration or abject despair to follow the news."

Obviously, the whole "life or death" thing is a joke, since the show has officially been brought back. And then there's the fact that three of the cast members said to be among those being replaced are scheduled to be on the panel. Certainly, salary negotiations could have fallen apart since the panel was first set up, but it makes you wonder… One thing's for certain, it will make the Futurama Comic-Con panel even more of a big deal. If the original cast is there, and this is an elaborate hoax, then fans will no doubt be very relieved. If they're not there, and they are indeed being recast, then it's not hard to imagine plenty of not-so-happy fan questions on the subject, to say the least.

Update: Variety is now chiming in on the Futurama situation, and it looks like this is indeed the real deal, as in not any sort of hoax. Variety confirms that the show has a dramatically slashed budget, and that the salary offers made to the cast were far below what they were asking – which Variety says was likely around $75,000 an episode. The budget cuts (compared to what the show had when it originally was produced) have also led to a smaller writing staff and a shorter schedule to produce episodes.

If there's any hope for fans, it's the fact that a casting call for new voice actors doesn't necessarily mean that a deal still can't be made. In fact, Variety points out that when negotiations were going badly for new deals with The Simpsons cast several years ago, similar casting inquiries were made for new actors – and obviously, in that case, the original cast did eventually come to terms on a new deal. Let's all cross our fingers that history repeats itself here...

Time to start praying again, guys. Seriously, I hope the voice actors make a deal. Suffice it to say the show wouldn't be the same, but it more than that, Futurama simply wouldn't be Futurama anymore. Here's hoping.

GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE!(via IGN)

Reports are coming in that the cast of Futurama is returning! The Star is reporting that the cast has signed new deals with 20th Century Fox already. All of this comes hot on the heels of some nail-biting salary negotiations and a "no show" for the voice cast during the San Diego Comic-Con panel last weekend.

We contacted 20th Century Fox this afternoon for confirmation on the stories coming in and while it seems The Star might have been a bit premature saying the deals are done, what we hear is also very optimistic. 20th informed us that voice actor Maurice LaMarche ("Kif Kroker"/Additional Voices) posted that he would be returning on his Facebook page, and that deals with the rest of the cast are imminent and will hopefully be finalized by the end of the day.

At Comic-Con this past weekend, IGN TV spoke to John DiMaggio ("Bender") about the situation and he told us he was hopeful a deal would be made. Luckily, it looks like his hopes – and the fans – have paid off.

Update: According to sources at 20th Century Fox, Billy West and John DiMaggio have not yet signed, but are close. However, Katey Sagal, Maurice LaMarche and Tress MacNeille are reportedly confirmed to have signed.

Update 2: And now we're completely in the clear! We just got this word from 20th Century Fox: "Just wanted you to know that we now have deals with the entire Futurama voice cast to return: John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Billy West, Tress MacNeille and Katey Sagal."

Futurama creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen released this statement: "We are thrilled to have our incredible cast back. The call has already gone out to the animators to put the mouths back on the characters."

Whoo-hoo! I think alot of people are gonna be very pleased to hear this. This is a huge relief since the shows return was announced then stripped of it's prestige when the announcement of the voice actors possibly not returning was put out. Thanks Nobu, and thank you you 20th! Very Happy

No knock on his "good friend" Jeff Bewkes -- or on Superman -- but Ted Turner wishes that he were running Time Warner so that he could make some changes at Cartoon Network and CNN, the cable news channel he founded 29 years ago.

At CNN, he wants "less fluffy news and more international news," especially about China, Turner says in an interview set to run on Bloomberg TV on Friday. "Less talk, more news," he says.

As for Cartoon Network, Turner tells anchor Betty Liu, "If I had control of it, I'd put 'Captain Planet' on at a top time period so that kids would see the environmental superhero instead of just Superman."

The environment, along with population control and nuclear disarmament, have been pet projects of Turner's for decades, and he has been spending more time with those issues since retiring from media a decade ago.

But he clearly misses his former occupation. When Liu asks him if there are any media mergers he'd like to see happen, Turner responds: "I'd like to see me running Time Warner." He says later, "I'd like CNN to report to me, and the Cartoon Network."

He did, though, give the thumbs up to the notion of Comcast acquiring a part of NBC Universal. "Go for it," he said. "You've got to do something. They've got a real good cable system. And they don't have that much programming."

Then again, Turner was also a proponent of AOL's purchase of Time Warner, which, nine years later, is generally regarded as the worst merger in corporate history.

Turner also says that Viacom-CBS mogul Sumner Redstone was correct when he said at a conference that selling Turner Broadcasting to Time Warner was Turner's downfall.

"He's right. I made a mistake. I was tired," Turner tells Liu.

Turner also says he "buried the hatchet," as Liu put it, with News Corp. topper Rupert Murdoch about 18 months ago. He dropped him a note the other day telling him he was doing a good job with the Wall Street Journal.

"He didn't write me back. He might not have gotten the letter," he says.

Not that he's a fan of print newspapers: "You're chopping all these trees down and making paper out of them and trying to deal with all the waste paper. It's the biggest solid waste problem that we have."

Eagle-eyed Topless Roboteer Rob N. found the above video which seems to indicate a ReBoot... reboot. Fact: Rainmaker Studios is apparently the new company that formed from MainFrame Entertainment, which originally made ReBoot. Item that Rob N asserts as fact: None of the original ReBoot makers are currently at Rainmaker, or working on the rebooted ReBoot (this is already getting annoying). Rob's opinion masquerading as fact: ReBoot was 30 minutes of crappy CG, Canadian misery before new episodes of Dragonball Z aired back in Toonami's glory days.

NICKELODEON ACQUIRES GLOBAL RIGHTS TO TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

Furthering its mission to provide premium content to its audiences, Nickelodeon—part of MTV Networks, a division of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B)—has acquired the global rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from The Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: KDE). The acquisition provides Nickelodeon, the world’s number-one entertainment brand for kids, global intellectual property rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the hit television, film and video game property that has delighted kids around the world for the last 25 years. The aggregate purchase price for the transactions is approximately $60 million.

Nickelodeon also announced plans to develop a new CG-animated television series based on the popular superhero franchise, anticipated to premiere in 2012. Additionally, in partnership with Viacom’s Paramount Pictures, a new release of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature film is also planned for 2012. Nickelodeon has also acquired all merchandising rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and will continue to work with its original and long-standing toy partner, Playmates Toys, which has been the creative force behind the successful TMNT master toy program over the last two decades.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shares a comedic sensibility with the Nickelodeon DNA, with added layers of action and fantasy that have kept this property an evergreen favorite with multiple generations of audiences,” said Cyma Zarghami, President, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group. “We are extremely happy to have the opportunity to be able to focus on this property and creatively re-introduce it to a new generation of kids.”

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a property that maintains a very passionate global fan base, is rich with opportunity for a tentpole movie, and is exactly the right property for us to work together with Nickelodeon,” said Adam Goodman, President, Paramount Pictures.

“Mirage has been the proud keeper of the Turtles’ brand since 1984, and in 2009 we celebrated their 25th anniversary with our legions of fans,” said Gary Richardson, CEO, Mirage Studios. “Nickelodeon is a powerhouse global brand, and we are confident that the company will be a wonderful steward for Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello and all the other TMNT characters and take them in all kinds of exciting and new creative directions.”

“We enjoyed our eight-year partnership with Mirage during which 4Kids and Mirage re-launched the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise for a new generation of kids around the world,” said Alfred Kahn, Chairman and CEO of 4Kids Entertainment, Inc. “We will also work with Mirage and Viacom so that our Turtles’ licensees can be assured of a seamless transition.”

Flower Mound, TX – December 7, 2009 – FUNimation Entertainment has signed a distribution agreement with Cybergraphix Animation, the California-based animation and entertainment group, to release the animated film “Guardians of Luna.”

The action anime is currently in development with writer Michael Reaves (Batman: The Animated Series, Gargoyles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as story editor and character designer Cindy H. Yamauchi (Naruto: The Movie, Black Lagoon, Akira).

“We have always sought to build strong partnerships for our productions,” said Avi Melman, CEO at Cybergraphix and Executive Producer of the series. “Having FUNimation as a partner will help build a strong distribution network and ultimately, increased exposure for Guardians of Luna.”

Guardians of Luna is a dark story which centers around an ancient race of shape-shifters with the ability to change into powerful creatures. Four unlikely heroes descended from this once-great race are charged with protecting an ancestral power source from a ruthless mogul.

Animation of the film will be done by APPP Co. Ltd. (Robot Carnival, Fist of the North Star: Toki-den) and is expected to begin in 2010.
A manga series is also in development, and a website has been launched.

The website, www.guardiansofluna.com , currently features a mailing list to keep fans updated, and will soon feature behind-the-scenes content and exclusive media and information from the cast and crew.

Shocking news- FUNimation has licensed Dragonball Z, yet again.

With a twist!
Quote:
According to Daizenshuu EX and confirmed by FUNimation on their blog, Navarre announced in their conference call that the company has acquired the North American rights to the Dragon Ball Kai series. This series isn't exactly a new series but rather the HD remaster of the original Dragon Ball Z series, taking it from 291 episodes to a roughly planned 100 episodes. The original source material has been extensively remastered and reworked for a 16:9 high definition presentation and the general approach has been to have it flow better and mirror the original manga better.

BioWare and FUNimation Entertainment announced today an agreement to create an anime feature film adapted from BioWare's critically-acclaimed fantasy Action RPG franchise Dragon Age. Production of the Dragon Age anime movie is slated to begin in May 2010, with a home video release in 2011. Executive producing the film are BioWare's Executive Producer Mark Darrah and Creative Director Mike Laidlaw, as well as FUNimation's Fukunaga and Director of Original Entertainment Chris Moujaes.

"Anime is a great medium for us to continue the robust Dragon Age story," said Mark Darrah, Executive Producer for the Dragon Age franchise. "Partnering with FUNimation ensures that we are delivering the exceptional quality and entertainment value that our Dragon Age fans expect."

"We are thrilled to be working with EA and BioWare on the production of the Dragon Age anime feature," said Gen Fukunaga, President and CEO of FUNimation. "We are going to be bringing the classic visual and storytelling techniques found in anime to create a film that will extend the narrative of the world BioWare has created."

Dragon Age has been selected as the first title in FUNimation's slate of major anime movies to be developed through FUNimation's Original Entertainment team since the announcement of the company's co-production initiative in November 2009.

When originally released in 2009, Dragon Age: Origins won over 30 critics awards and was named "RPG of the Year" by the Academy of Arts and Interactive Sciences, Game Informer, G4, SpikeTV, and PC Gamer. Seth Schiesel of The New York Times described the game as " . . . perhaps the best electronic game made yet."

Via Anime News Network, Cinema Today and AnimeAnime.JP are reporting that a new Supernatural series is set to debut in 2011 - in Japan and animated by Madhouse Studios. The live action series just closed out its fifth season and has been renewed for a sixth, not without some controversy, but apparently the property has been doing pretty well in Japanese eyes and Warner Bros. is looking to expand the franchise in a new way. Warner Bros. has done a few works with Japanese animators in the last few years with a collection of Matrix storylines in the Animatrix as well as the Batman anime anthology that was done. Warner Bros. also has several live action films that they're looking at going forward with based on anime and manga properties and they handled the release of an Appleseed 3DCG anime film as well.

According to the reports, the show will be done as a twenty-two episode series and will see a home video release in Japan on 01/12/2011 with the first volume containing the first two episodes. A month later, the first box set will ship with episodes 3-12 and then in April, the last half of the set will be released. The show will be available on both DVD and Blu-ray.

This release will apparently cover the storyline from the first two seasons of the live action series while also having some new original stories mixed in that will include material of the Winchester brothers' younger days and more such as anime-only enemies and stories focusing on the supporting cast from the live-action version.

Supernatural's creator Eric Kripke is being listed as the project creator while Madhouse is serving as an executive producer as well. The series is being co-directed by the team of Shigeyuki Miya and Atsuoko Ishizuka, both of whom have some good credits behind them and recently worked on the Aoi Bungaku series of standalone tales.
