You know, it was what they did at the time. The whole, 'find a new land, make the people slaves, take all the riches', thing. Everyone did that. So if you did it, you wouldn't think of yourslef as an invader, but instead as a great adventurer and a person that would bring great riches to your kingdom.
Techinically, Columbus wasn't looking for a new land, he was looking for a quick way to Asia.
Asia had fantastic stuff, like sugar and silk, that everybody wanted. Only problem was, European countries were about as far away from Asia as possible. The goods that did reach those countries usually passed through numerous other countries who taxed the goods as they passed through. The end result was silk and other stuff were insanely expensive.
So, someone started building better ships that combined the square sails used on the Mediterranean with the triangular sails used on the Indian Ocean, producing ships with both good speed and good maneuverability. They also produced a technique called "volte de mar" or "return through the sea". Traditionally, most ships would hug the coast as they sailed to avoid getting lost. Now, ships would follow trade winds to get them to their destination. They would take trade winds that took them farther away from their destination just to catch a trade wind that would then take them to their destination. And this proved much faster than following the coasts.
Of the pictures of the trade winds/sailing routes that I saw, the Spanish and Portuguese were already extremely close to hitting Brazil. At some point they were going to hit it just be shear chance.
Oh, and eventually, Europeans traded all over the world, making shitloads of money and dragged their asses out of the backwater to become world powers. Screw you, "Southernization"! _________________ Able and Baker is nice.
