Alright, i'm getting sick and tired of this crap afflicting my computer. Over this week 6 trojans and 1 virus have infected my system and still it runs like ass and prevents me from any stress relieving activities....that being playing games.

Doug has been kind enough to help me the best he can, but even he has his limits. Yes, something is so bassackwardly screwed with my comp that it cannot be found on the internet.

Trust me, I have used everything that I know: PCPitStop, Panda Virus Scan, Trend Micro Virus Scan, Symantec Corporate Version Virus Scan, Spybot, AdAware. Anything these have found and fixed, and still it runs like crap.

So, as a desperate plea to all of you here please help me out here. You can contact me on AIM(if the slowdown allows it to run) at finaldragoon77. I need something before I chunk my laptop out the window. Oh and one more thing: don't tell me to buy a Mac, that is best left to be said only by Tyler.

You can help me help you by describing the specs of your laptop and the problem you're having.

For example:
CPU speed
amount of RAM
hard disk size, amount of free space
operating system
are all service packs & hot-fixes installed?

Also, which of the following best describes the slowness problem:

It's slow starting up.

OR

It starts up, but when you get to the desktop it takes a long time for the Windows logon sound to play. But after that it runs fine until you go to shut it off and it takes a long time for the Windows logoff sound to play.

OR

It runs slow all the time.

OR

P4 2Ghz
384mb of RAM
30GB Hard drive, roughly 6GB free
Windows XP Home
As far as I know yes

Description: Whenever windows fully loads it seems as if the CPU is running at 100% no matter what and everything take far too much time, add to that i can't play games anymore -_-. Yet, when I go to the task manager, it shows no resources are being used.

Also 2 thing have been happening: sometimes different programs will minimize for no reason, and also the cursor, when typing, will suddenly jump up a sentence or even a paragraph.

If you need more info i'll gladly give it to you. Anything to get this fixed.

Ive been at work all day working on computers, come home and help others with there......there must be irony in this somewhere.

Anyway, run MSCONFIG in run box. Close all suspicioous non essential prgrams, such as "fsearch~.exe" or something to that nature. Run ad-aware with ALL custom settings turned on. (checked green) Then quarentine, and go to the adaware folder and delete the quarentined selection.

Stop going to porn sites and or d/ling porn from kazaa, its full of viruses and spy ware. And get a virus protection program, ie. norton 2004. Download the latest patches and updates from microsoft, such as k835732, the sasser worm patch. (you probably dont have sasser though, it makes your pc shut down by count down usualy), but just in case.

Finnaly, if this aggravates you and upsets you b/c it requires too much time, and dosnt fix the problem sometimes......do what I do, RE-FORMAT. Just make sure you have your drivers for system to reinstall after installing OS again. And back up imporntant data.

All in all, I reformat most of the time. Works better on time and my anger level.

Actually Zer0 was right on the downloading pr0n part from Kazaa Lite -_-;;;; i'll stop that now.

Oh, and for the reformat thing....ain't gonna happen. I don't want to switch to linux, and my laptop didn't come with a Windows XP cd...damn them bastards.

do this: set up two accounts on your computer. first is an administrator login so you can install what you need, that is all you use it for. second is your user login (w/ limited accessy thing) where you actually do your work and play your games and download n such. Since you can't make any real changes unless you got admin privoleges so that will help you. I'd also invest in a ghosting program. This allows you to make a hidden backup of your hardrive (do it when you have the fresh install of windows, your programs installed, and logins set up) and when your comp gets all jacky like your saying it is run ghost and it will wipe your hd clean and restore the backed up version. I also suggest getting some form of hardware firewall if you don't have one just to be on the safe side.

Just remember, mp3's can't carry viruses.

I know I'll probably be going over stupid stuff that may already be done or known, but I have to cover eveything I know that might be problem.

Was the Norton antivirus program installed recently? I only ask because the "on access" or "auto-protect" feature may be on, which scans every file as it is used. (Start up an internet browser or game and every file used by that program is checked).

Under the start menu, select "Run" and enter "services.msc" in the text field. This will allow you to set the status of services on your system. Some services run automatically, but you may not necessarily need them. So, you could change them to "manual" startup. You probably want to be careful about what you change, but I'm fairly sure you can change the "Help and Support" service without damaging anything.

Also, defragment your hard drive. It might help a little.

And if you can't think of every possible problem yourself, you could just set up a VNC server and let someone else rummage around on your computer. Of course, you should trust the person to whom you give access.

An important note on Norton/Symantec AntiVirus:

When you install it, it is not set up to scan every file and directory. It usually does not scan the System Volume Information directory located on every drive and .nbx files and one other file type I'm forgetting.

Go to the Exclusions settings for Norton AntiVirus and remove all the exclusions. Also note there are two Exclusions tabs: one for Auto-Protect and one for Manual Scan. Make sure you change both of them.

Some viruses like to hide in the System Volume Information folder, so having your AntiVirus program configured so it checks everything is a must.

Only 6 hours to bring FFXI up to speed? Took me 4 hours to do that 3 patches ago.
