Here's the deal, I have a pretty dang new, rarely used slim Playstation 2.

I went to go turn it on, and the light turned green for 2 seconds and went back to red. It would not start up.

Everything seems fine. It's getting juice. When I push the on/off button the light turns green for about 1.5 seconds and then it goes back to the red standby (plugged in) light. When I hold the button in it doesn't make a difference, it does the same thing.

I've tried different outlets and everything.

And the owners manual is not good because one of the solutions to fixing everything else is "make sure your console is on. X_x No troubleshooting for if it won't.

Anybody have a clue? Because honestly I find this obnoxious. I've hardly even put any play into the thing. I bought it back when Kingdom Hearts II was released.

I'd say the best course of action would be to contact Sony Customer Support ASAP. If you bought it when Kingdom Hearts 2 was released (late March), it might still be under warranty. That way, they shouldn't be able to charge you should they need to fix it.

I thought it was because you spend all your money on comics and DVDs. Razz

It's funny, I have a PS2 from the very first release, and the only times I had problems were disc problems(like the machine not doing a certain DVD feature), and when the supplied controller acted up on me. The actual box has been acting just perfect.

You must be one of the lucky ones. My friend's PS2 was one of the first ones, it died about 3 months ago. Mine was about a year after release, it freezes up a lot now, I just hope it lasts untill PS3 release...

Count me in with the "lucky ones". Got my PS2 in May 2001 and haven't experienced much of a problem yet. Sure, game disks take a few seconds longer to boot up and some DVDs have trouble playing, but any console able to endure my gaming drive for over five years without completely burning out has to be doing something right...

As for the topic question, I've only had a slim PS2 since April, so it isn't my area of expertise. It sounds like you've done the checks I would consider before requesting help (outlets, owners manual, etc.). Was there a thunderstorm in your area around when this started happening? It could also be a fan issue, as I know the fat PS2's won't power on or will suddenly power off if it detects a faulty fan...

I'll assume you've called Sony Customer Support by now. Can you let us know what their diagnosis is?

Go buy a "chubby" PS2, Network adapter, and Maxtor/seagate HDD. Then find a way to get HDDloader onto your memory card and bam: copy games w/o a mod chip. Long live the Chubbies!

also with the HDD even if you own the game, it loads much faster from the HDD then the disk, its a win-win situation.

My PS2 started malfunctioning after it tipped over while in the vertical position. The DVD drive was making noises like it was struggling until it stopped working.

However, I later open the case and "pumped" the lens assembly (moving it back and forth as it would on a DVD) and got the damn thing to start working again. It must have been some sort of friction problem.

^I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you know what you're doing.

But like everyone says, it's best to call Tech Support. I don't know if they would do an exchange like they did for the old PS2, but call them and see. The thing is you want to at least have $45-75 dollars on hand.
