Wow, I had a lot to catch up on with this thread... Anyway, Let's get started.

That's not the alcohol! I can't remember what it was, but you can get the same effect from stuff that doesn't include poison.

2. The columnist made a derogatory and unnecessarily crass statement about the founder of a religion worshiped by millions of people around the world. I'm not saying that violent retribution was necessary, but I think that the person who made such a statement was obviously a complete moron for thinking he could get away with making a mockery of a religion followed by many native Nigerians.

Um, no he didn't. He simply made a joke that maybe Mohammed(sp?) himself would probably want to take one of them for a wife. The riot started as a mass email campaing (not exactly your poorest, most desparate citizens), stating only that a newspaper had slandered the word of Allah and the name of Mohammed--that's it. So they all got together and started breakin' stuff.

The Secular Culture of America is one that saps away such strong moral standings among its citizenry. The only time I've remembered seeing a large number of our population being pissed-off enough to want to kill was after 9/11.

I always thought it was a good thing that we placed the value of lives over a trivial topic such as a beauty pageant, that could possibly be degrading to women. And that 9/11 thing was jacked because it made zealots out of the mindless collective of sheep that is America. "They must be wrong because they hate us for all the terrible things we did to them! Let's end the terrorism my sewing more hatred and rage into their hearts!" The true solution to any terrorist situation is education and understanding. The pen is mightier than the sword, right?
Quote:
To people who live everywhere else, religion is a promise of something better than the shit-hole they live in and call home, something more just and righteous than the police that can come in at any minute and shoot them for disagreeing with the current political heads, something stronger than their hunger, something grander than their poverty. Faith and religion are things that promise greater strength than any earthly kingdom. Religion is the one hopeful glimmer of a just society in a whole world that is constantly in war. Whether you live in Iraq, Mexico, or even living in the poorest sections of the Appalacian Mountains, your God is the only thing that can keep you from falling, from becoming a victim.

Wow, that really sucks. These people have lost faith in humanity, so they stick it in a god, whose actually an abstract expression for that humanity they lost faith in. Some people...

You might not see yourself being able to "go nuts" like that simply because you have no point of reference. Nothing pulls you enough to risk life and limb. It's safer to have no convictions at all, but is that necessarily any better?

Isn't that what Passion really is? Conviction and strength?

about Bono's comment speaking about God wanting us to kill those trying to kill us - people misunderstand Christianity, especially because of all the things Christians in the past (and certainly even the present) do; Christianity is a religion of peace, and Jesus is a pacifist, event he point of telling others to "turn the other cheek" and "love your enemy as your neighbor"

Wow, thanks for explaining my post in twice as many words. You get the same high honors as The Dragon Master.

You've yet again made my quote list!
Seriously, though, that was a very enlightening post (even though I've heard it all from you all ready--I guess I should feel lucky to have that opportunity), and it saved me having to write out several paragraphs to the same effect.
Oh yes, and that last sentence goes for CP, to. Although, A-Tech has a much better phrase than "play nice"; "Don't be a path to grond."

I didn't sya it was the alcohol in the wine that was good for you, more of that it was an added bonus. Basicly alcohol isn't bad in smaller doses. And actually can be used to great benifits (all you need to know is tequilla and a broken limb = much more comfortable)

"Don't be a path to grond" . . . ? There's either a typo or a reference in there that I don't get. Explanation?

A: 'Path to Grond' is an inside joke that John needs to explain. I wasn't there.

B: What does it matter that Mormons believe they convert the dead? Either the dead people are already at their final destination, or they're just plain dead. It's stupid, not wrong.

C: What bugs me about the religious micromanagement of people's lives is the fact that it's not the religion keeping them from killing themselves. Religions just say it's a good idea. In reality, each person is responsible for controlling him/herself. Religious traditions are simply effective PSAs.

Converting the dead is wrong no matter how you do it. they lived and died their own ways, no need for snot-nosed decendants converting them to a religion they had possibly never heard of in their time. If my great great grandchild tried to convert me after I died I would come back and haunt them for the rest of their life, assuring that their life is full of nothing but pain and sorrow. And blood, lots of blood.

well, look at the bright side. Its like having sex with the dead, they can't say no. lol, j/k j/k. god i'm a sick bastard. But seriously, think of it this way, if we're right then we did a good thing, if not, then we just really strange people. Cool The only way we will know for sure is when we die. Thats the problem with any religion, you just gotta have faith. Although my motto tends to be "whatever floats the boat".

Didn't these dead people have a chance to convert during their lifetimes? Are they not independent beings, with their own willpower? Once more, the LDS church doesn't recognize individual rights.

Who says they didn't? How many people have you met that didn't know about Mormonism? What gives you the right to decide that your deceased friends/family should have been Mormon, just because you are?

The LDS church hasn't been along for very long you realize. When we perform baptisms for the deceased family members, we strech it out through SEVERAL generations. Why do you think that that the largest geneology database in the WORLD is in Utah? And I never said anything about baptizing your friends. Listen, look at it this way. If you died and never had a chance to take a honest look at the church, you still have a chance that one of your relatives might perform that ordinance for you. Even then, in heaven or whatever you believe it is, you still have agency which allows you to chose for yourself up there. I feel better about that than I feel about students at my High school trying to "save" their friends because unless they join and come unto christ, their going to hell.

I'm just going to do my damnedest to keep my children from"saving" me after I'm gone. They deserve more dignity than that.

Question: Lets say you die and your great great grandkids convert you to, say, Buddhism 50 years after you are dead. How do you feel?
