Thanx CP, I never knew that part about the shellfish. Now I have more ammo for the dabate with my friend on religion. *sheepish grin*

I can't wait...

O yeah, I had no idea it was called Civil Union. I don't follow the news that much. I thought you were talking about Unions in general, my B. I think I got my point across on both though.

part? there are over 400 laws from the old testament all of which would fall basically in the same boat...

I'm gonna get flamed for this...
But I don't realy care...

What do you mean, CP, about using the Bible as a shield?
The Bible is what tells Christians how to live.
It's the only unfailable guied that tells us how to live.

And as far as Old Testament law goes, it doesn't matter anymore.
The Ten Commandments and the Moses's laws were really only written to show the need for a savior. No person can be compared to the law and be blameless.
That's why they don't apply, if you ask me.

But, the New Testament does speak out against sexual immorality, and same-sex relationships. While Jesus never spoke out against same sex relations, He also didn't condemm the adulterous woman who was brought to him. But Jesus also never went on about "you can do this, but you can't do that." He was more concerned with the condition of a persons heart.

All that said, I don't believe in same-sex marriages. I believe that marriage is a sacred instituion set up by God. That said, I try to love the sinner and hate the sin. Really, in God's eyes, is one sin greater than another. I don't believe so. Recently, I've realized that, instead of fighting to stop same-sex unions, I should be working to show people Jesus.

Sorry if you think I've wasted your time.
Just had to say my piece.

Nono, good post Overdrive. I disagree with a few points, but well thought out.

When I mentioned using the bible as a sheild, I meant people that say "homosexuals are sinners because the bible says so." Again, something isn't wrong because it's a sin, it's a sin because the action is inherently, objectively wrong. Thus, if you cannot justify the reasoning behind thinking that homosexuality is a sin, and all you can say is "The bible doesn't allow it," then you are not using the bible as a guide, you are using it as a sheild because gay people skeave you out.

Using the bible as a shield for your view is wrong. Using it as a guide for your life is very, very respectable. There is a HUGE difference.

Of course, I don't, personally, like organized religion because it prevents free thought. I mean, I like the core beliefs (the core of every major religion is the same: Love people. There is no one true religion.) I just don't like some of the stuff that gets associated with religion. But it's a personal thing. I don't force my view on anyone.

I wholeheartedly agree that civil unions should be instated. They should be done by the state, or some other non-religious party, and should not be called "marriage". That just pisses people off. However, they should, as CP says, receive ALL the legal/financial benefits of marriages.

What's the difference, you may ask? The answer is religious. I can understand people being against gay marriages because it's against their religion. The marriage ceremonies could take place in their church, or be performed by one of their spiritual leaders. It is their right to refuse to do this.

However, a civil union created by the state is completely seperate from religion. Therefore, religious beliefs should NOT be a part of the decision, unless your religion is the official, state-supported religion. I don't need to tell you that this is what the US is trying not to have. If you have a beef with civil unions, work it out on your own time. Don't come crying to the legislature that you have to forcibly prevent people from the sin of homosexuality.

If you still feel the need to convince Congress not to instate civil unions, consider this example of state vs. religion:
Religions, in general, don't support gambling. I'm fairly certain that Islam lists gambling as a sin. Christianity at least considers gambling a bad idea, and the people who take advantage of gamblers as sinners.

However, states have the right to determine whether to allow gambling. Several states have. Do you see religions crying to the government to take it away? I haven't in 18 years of living in Vegas.

What is the fundamental difference between the gambling issue and homosexuality? All I can see is people saying that gays are icky and unnatural (a discussion for another time).
