i'd like to respond cc, but i can't really argue either way...i've honestly only seen one episode subbed, and it was centered around yahiko, so it wasn't like i got the chance to really guage the voice-acting...i was brought up on the dub, and despite a few stumbles, i thought the english cast did a decent job, but again, i don't have the ability to fairly back that up right now (though i'll force myself to buy the dvd's soon enough)

wednesday night:

if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? we get the same basic formula with yahiko getting himself in trouble over helping out others and kenshin saving the day...yahiko realizes the importance of helping others with his sword and presumably takes his studies more seriously (well, it doesn't look like there's much seriousness when he's around karou, but you know what i mean...)

with some minor revelations of kenshin's past, we push into a two-parter to end the first week...

I think his voice fits quite well, personally. I havne't heard the Japanese voice, but then again, I haven't heard the japanese voices for any anime. But I like Kenshin's voice. He sounds like a goofball/slight pansy until he has to be serious. The whole show has a playful feel to it. It's quite refreshing.

I honestly feel, (and I'm sorry if this sounds hypocritical) that historical based series should not be dubbed.

Trust me, you're not alone on this. I believe our own dear JohnyPsycho believes the same thing. I personally don't care, it's all based on if I really feel like reading my television or not.

Unfortunatly I have yet to be able to catch Kenshin, but hopefully if all goes well I will tonight so be able to comment on any of the other stuff in your post.

Coming from the Anime News Network, I was glad to know that Kenshin has recived incredibly light edits by Toonami standards. If it's sucessful, it might air on the Saturday block, which airs the openings. So things can only get better.

I have to disagree, they take the very essence out of the show, but that wasn't cartoon network's fault, but animeworks. I hope that everyone at least is compelled to see it subbed. I feel the dub takes away from the cultural experience, considering, the dub actors aren't in the exact same mind set that the Japanese actors were in. I hope you all enjoy it and that the openings are kept, and that we don't have stupid 15 year olds come to my house with my little brother and go: 'Man, that sano sookay guy is the best!' Then I will hurt them for saying it wrong ha ha ha!

That's the fault of the dubbers. Not even Toonami can fix that.

it's not the fault of the VAs its the fault of the producer and director. it's their job to make sure the VA's get it right. Same goes for the japanese dub. Are any of you really that fluent in japanese to trully tell if they're spot on or not? What you hear in japanese could very well be a not so good dub job and you just don't know it.

I think that goes without saying. But there's no reason an English dub is categorically and automatically inferior to the original Japanese version because of it.

thursday night:

sanoske makes his debut as a "fighter-for-hire with morals"-type guy, and while he originally respected kenshin's decline for a fight, he gets hired to do so by the fake battousai from the first episode...round one ends in a preliminary draw, as sanoske didn't want the children to witness a true fight...

i've heard sanoske's one of the big targets of the "anti-dub" crowd, but i haven't heard his sub voice so i don't really know why...it does take his voice actor some time to comfortably fit into the role, as some people could point out from this episode, but i always considered it fine by the time the kyoto arc rolls around...

hmm...tomorrow ends the first week of kenshin on toonami; feels like it's always been there, and it's only been four episodes =)

Which one seems the better fit for Adult Swim?

Now, that seems hardly fair. It almost seems you're playing out Inuyasha to be a kid's show, which is not the case.

Anyway, it's good that Toonami got RK and is showing it some serious respect. The RK promo is the best i've seen since the Outlaw Star promos back in January 2001.

friday night:

sanoske's past is revealed to us, giving the reason he's so eager to take down kenshin, a former imperialist...kenshin does pull out a victory, but has to resort to using two special techniques of the hiten mitsarougi (sic) to take him down...having found some peace, sanoske quits his fighter-for-hire job and appears to want to tag along with kenshin...

while the fight wasn't amazing, it was a nice change of pace to have kenshin not effortlessly take care of someone...this also serves as a good way to end the first week, as i believe the next few episodes get rather serious...

I would like to commend CN on breathing new life into Toonami with Kenshin. Before Kenshin, I hadn't watched Toonami since GGundam started rerunning. The show seems to have the voices correctly chosen, even though they may be butchuring the names (which only us otaku seem to complain about). Get over the names, the target audience would be confused with their proper names.

If you really care that much, buy the DVD's. You can get your proper names and still support/inspire the people who bring anime over to take bigger risks and bring over more and even better shows.

I'll wait for a Boxset thank you very much. And I think they did a good job with the names
