Square Enix has opened up an official Japanese website for its upcoming PS2 remake, Romancing Saga: Mistrel Song. The site amounts to little more than a teaser for the moment, featuring two commercials for the game.

The remake of Minstrel Song, a game that originally appeared on the SNES, will feature 3D graphics among a number of changes. The gameplay will remain similar to the original, letting the player choose between eight characters and including a fairly open-ended quest.

Romancing Saga: Minstrel is expected to be playable at this month's Tokyo Game Show.

The official Japanese web site for The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap has been opened. The only items on the site now are a unique and creative flash trailer and set of release dates.

Surprisingly enough, those dates leave the U.S. last to receive the game. Japan sees it November 4 and Europe a week later, with a stateside arrival on January 10. This may be due to the Nintendo DS's pending release, or some kind of karma debt.

The most recent of Weekly Jump Magazine reveals that Dragon Quest VIII will be released in the Japan on November 27. The eighth installment is a landmark for the series, as it is the first to feature fully 3D graphics.

Known as Dragon Warrior in in the United States, the series hasn't had a hit in the western hemisphere since the NES era. In Japan, however, there is nothing bigger, and attendance at Japanese schools and offices is destined to be suspiciously low on the 27th.

Ubisoft has decided to delay all versions of its third episode in the Splinter Cell franchise, Chaos Theory, from its tentative november 2004 release date, all the way to March 2005.

No specific reason as to why it has been pushed back was given, apart "This will allow players on Xbox, PlayStation2, GameCube. from and PC to discover at the same time the latest blockbuster from the Splinter Cell brand, whose quality will be over the top as a result of the additional development time."

Sega announced today The Typing of the Dead: Zombie Panic for the PS2. The game will be shown at next week's Tokyo Game Show and is expected to see Japanese release this winter.

This PS2 version will feature all modes that have made their way into previous entries in the series. An arcade mode mimics the original arcade title exactly, with an original mode of play adding items and two-player cooperative play where both players work together to type the same word. A mini game mode will include nine new mini games, including a long phrase time attack featuring phrases from the Japanese constitution. An attack mode puts players up against bosses and other characters from the game. Also included are tutorial and practice modes.

For the required keyboard controller, Sega will be making the game open to standard USB keyboards. However, it will also ship with a USB keyboard bundled in, all for the low price of 5800 yen. Those who already have a keyboard will be able to pick up the game on its own for 4800 yen.

Nintendo's latest portable system, the dual-screen DS, will be hitting U.S. stores on November 21 at a price of $149.99. After a lengthy wait for a final release date, the company also announced a December 2 launch for the system in Japan, followed by Europe and Australia in the first quarter of 2005.

The DS will be Nintendo's first system to debut in the states, a move the company attributed to the "enthusiastic reaction from gamers" and the holiday sales season. The November 21 date will have the system on shelves in time for Thanksgiving weekend, by far the year's busiest at retail.

While compatible with the single-player modes from all previous Game Boy titles, the system's own launch library is still in flux. Nintendo promised a final announcement on software will be made "in the near future." The company also released two new pictures of the system, including one of the built-in PictoChat software. PictoChat uses the system's wireless connection to enable sending messages between users. Besides the software, the picture also shows a slightly updated system design.

Excerpts from this Gamespot.com article, wrote:

Redesigned $149 PS2 to launch November 1

Although it said as recently as last Friday that rumors of a redesigned PlayStation 2 were "pure speculation," today Sony unveiled a radically redesigned version of the device. It was, however, not named the "PStwo" as many had expected. "The new version will go by the same name as the old version," a Sony representative told GameSpot. "The current model in the market will be replaced by the new PlayStation 2, and at the same suggested retail price of $149.99."

The new PlayStation 2, model number SCPH-70000 CB, has a "completely new look" compared with its predecessor, the SCPH-50000. Actually, "radically" might be a bit of an overstatement, since, by the company's own admission, the new PS2 does have the "the basic functions and design philosophy of the current PlayStation 2."

However, the new console is smaller--much smaller that previous estimates, which speculated that it would be three-quarters the size of the original PlayStation 2. In fact, the SCPH-70000 CB is 75 percent smaller than the original, with its width now only 1.1 inches (2.8cm), down from 3.07 inches (7.8cm). The SCPH-70000 CB will also have less than half the heft of the original PS2, weighing in at a mere 1.98 pounds (900g). "Its size is almost as small as a hardcover book," SCE said in a statement.

Besides being smaller, the new PS2 will also have more functionality, with an Ethernet port built into the device. Previously, a now-bulky-looking Ethernet adapter had to be bought separately for $39.99. The new console will have the same two memory-card slots and two controller slots as the first PS2, and it will come with one Dual Shock 2 controller. A new, round base for vertical display will be sold separately.

Speaking of cost, SCE officials confirmed that the new PS2 will retail at the same price point as the current model--$149 in the US, 149 euros ($181) in Europe--when it goes on sale November 1, just over a week after its rumored October 26 release date. In Japan, the unit will go on sale on November 3 with no MSRP.

Whatever happened to the PS2.5 / PSX thing that was supposed to be a PS2 with a TV-tuner, hard drive, and DVD burner?

I was looking forward to getting that wannabe TiVo.

Is Sony still going to release it, or did it get scraped/shelved?

The PSX, depending on who you ask, was eather "not especially successful" or "a miserable failure," and most doubt we will ever see it in the US. However, there is the distinct possibility that the PS3 will have DVR capabilities.

I pretty sure MS is going in the direction of flash memory to replace the giant bulk of of the original xbox partly caused by the HDD.

Sega of America to bring over Shining Tears for PS2

Sega of America announced today that Shining Tears, an action role-playing title that will be shown this week at the Tokyo Game Show, is coming to the US. The spiritual successor to the Shining In The Darkness and Shining Force series that appeared on the Genesis and Sega Saturn systems, Shining Tears is scheduled to ship in spring 2005.

Offering upwards of 50 hours of gameplay, according to Sega, and eight different endings, Shining Tears is an action role-playing game with real-time battles and cooperative multiplayer gameplay. The main character is a young man who has lost his memory and finds himself living in a city under siege, caught in the midst of a war he does not understand. The game's storyline finds the boy and his friends exploring the world and discovering the grim reality of the war-torn world he inhabits.

Not even a hard drive could make a console THAT big. I'm telling you, there's a midget in there running that thing.

the problem was that the drive and the hdd made the console that deep, the mainboard made it that wide and when stacked on top of each other there's your height.

Microsoft Game Studios must have been more than pleased today to send out notice that Lionhead's RPG Fable is breaking records at retailers throughout North America.

Fable was EB Games' biggest first-week sales for any Xbox title ever; it broke Game Rush's first-day sales record for any game; it is the No. 1-selling overall title on any platform last week at GameStop and is the fastest-selling Xbox game at EB Games Canada for the first week.

The video game and movie industries continue to blend, so a little comparison in revenue is never bad, as Fable grossed more money than the No. 1 box office movie last week, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

"Fable was the best first-week title on Xbox that we've ever had" says Jim Tyo, vice president of EB Games Canada. "The game has exceeded our expectations, and we're confident that this strong sales trend will continue."

"Fable has been a huge hit for us, and it was our number one-selling title across all platforms over the last week" says Dan DeMatteo, president and chief operating officer of GameStop.

they better brag now, since those records will likely be rewritten once november rolls around and halo 2 takes the scene...
