No "F-ing" way it would run unedited.

Well, maybe not-un-edited, but semi-edited.

There aren't degrees of edited. If there are any edits made, it's edited.

Well, we could debate the difference between "uncut" and "unedited".

Or we could be normal people and understand that semi-edited means that no scense were cut, just either some language alterations or a little blood painted out.

But I do suppose that would be un-cut, no?

Ratings have been steadily improving without having to haul shows out of the basement just so people can once again complain about all the editing that was done to get them on Toonami in the first place.
Although Kenshin is coming back on Saturday.

Well, while I'm not too crazy about Toonami's current lineup myself, I've been able to deal with it (by just not watching it). The only thing that I have a real problem with is the current state of "YuYu Hakusho."

I think that the fact that Toonami is airing an edited "YuYu Hakusho" is really stupid. Toonami could always air "YuYu Hakusho" uncut, and the parents have no right to sue, so long as the proper rating is placed on the shows. If it were "TV-PG," for example, then Toonami could air more blood and swearing. They don't do this because they think it will cause the network to lose viewer loyalty; however, when considered in a logical manner, doing something like that would probably gain the trust and loyalty of viewers like myself, who've watched the uncut stuff and like it a lot more.

I mean, sure, Toonami isn't intended for older viewers like me, but hey, I watched Adult Swim starting in 2002, and I was underage. I think that if Toonami really wants to bolster its ratings, they'd do something like that (but obviously, they're content with what they're getting week in and week out as of now).

The ratings of a viewer supposedly "don't count" if that viewer is outside of the intended age bracket, but let's be honest. How in the world are they going to know if I'm 3, 10, 17, 22, 50, or 65? Maybe I missed something, but unless they use census records or have hidden cameras in my house, the chances are pretty slim. I don't remember answering any Cartoon Network survey asking my age.

So, that's the way I see it. A move like that (maybe for Kenshin, too) would clearly benefit the network. I guess that the suits are either too paranoid or too dense to see the benefits.

In the meantime, I've got my "YuYu Hakusho" box sets (uncut, of course), homework, and NFL Playoffs to keep me busy.

As near as I can gather, the way Neilson Ratings work is that surveys are sent to random houshoulds to fill out for a week and then send back. They may survey, say, 3000 homes in the US in any given week, and then use those answers to estimate the what the entire country was watching. They make sure to send polls to all types of people of all types of ages. As shady as that may sound, the surveys are usually off by 5% or less from the actual. So maybe you weren't polled (don't feel left out, I only know one family that's ever been polled. And that was 7 years ago) but the statistics that the suits are given rule the network.

And again, just because we here at the Infolink understand how the system works, doesn't mean we like everything that gets put on TV. But I tend to keep everything in perspective, and looking at Cartoon Network on the whole over the past 5 years of my life, I like what I've seen. So I defend their decisions, and make sure I understand their mentality before I bitch about it.

As for Yu Yu Hakusho, I've been watching it since the first day it aired. I think I've almost outgrown it, but I keep watching because, hey, it sucks to start something and not finish it. And it was nicer when it was less cut. But I don't find myself screaming at the TV to leave in the word "Damn" or the particularly gruesome scene that they edit out.

Funimation makes two versions of the stuff they produce: Edited and Unedited. CN takes makes a deal for a show and takes one of the versions. There is no semi-edited, no tailor-made-to-the-timeslot-CN-will-be-airing-it-in version. I'm sure that if there were, CN would snatch it in a heartbeat. But there isn't. And so, since it's not on AS (and I've enever really felt that it truly deserved to be on AS) we get the Edited version.

Can it be annoying? Of course. But remember, you're getting the show for free. That always eases my mind.

It's not paranoia, it's good business.

If I may interject, it's not parents that the Toonami suits fear, it's advertisers. Toonami now, as a block, is kind of a difficult balancing act to program in the first place. Sure they program to attract 9-14 year-olds, but the sponsorship money comes from advertisers aiming at 6-11 year-olds (yes, the same as Miguzi). So to keep the sponsorship money rolling in, they front-load the block with the tamer stuff like Duel Masters and ease into the heavier subject matter later in the evening. But they still have to edit the shows down to a point where advertisers feel comfortable, which is outlined in the dreaded Cartoon Network Broadcast Standards and Practices (BS&P). And the shows still have to pull in acceptable numbers from the target viewer demographics. As CP keep repeating, Toonami is run by animation fans, but it's still a business first.

As an aside anecdote: According to head honcho Sean Akins in an interview he did for Toon Zone, Inu-Yasha would have run on Toonami if he could have gotten away with Inu-Yasha's impalement to the tree, but he couldn't, so Dog-boy's an [as] star.
