I just got back from a chinese Restraunt down here in Texas. Good food of course, but something really bugged me. The restraunt didn't have any chopsticks out for people to use! The only way I got em was to ask for em from the waitress... who, even then, thought I was gonna stick them up my nose or something. Half way through my meal I quickly realized that nobody was using chop sticks... which brings me to my question. Are you a redneck who uses a fork and hands to eat chinese food or like me, who can actually use chop sticks?

The guy at Dragon Boat, my Favorite Friendly Neighborhood Japanese Food Court Resteraunt in my Friendly Neighborhood Japanese Mall sometimes gives out forks, and sometimes gives out chopsticks.
I use what he gives me.

...But if you ask for beef teriyaki, he might give you some other crap. I want beef teriyaki, dammit!

In Vegas, we mostly use chop sticks. I'm not sure yet about Rolla.

JESUS CHRIST!

Stupid, stupid Americans. Excuse me. Texans. We Americans need to learn to eat with two sticks as soon as possible when we're young. Like everyone does out in Hawaii. That way, we can walk into a Chinese place and not have to suffer through the agony of seeing/using a fork. Unless you're in a steakhouse.

Nice thing about living in a college town is that they have an asia market where you can buy washable chop sticks to practice on those nasty tasting american ramen noodles.

you would imagine that I nearly grew up in a japanese household that I would have learned to master the chopstick..... but noooooo my fingers were designed to hold three things: a pencil, a fork, and meat. not sticks.

what are these "chaup-stix" and "sil-vur-wear" you speak of?... I just slurp all my food off my plate with my extremely flexible, foot-long tongue...

...hopefully that got the attention of all the ladies in here*... Razz Wink Laughing

*all both of them (the legal-aged ones at least)

I use chop sticks only when I'm in an upscale asian resturant,or just want to have fun with the pair I bought up at the Japan Pavilion at Epcot . Mostly the waiters dont really care cause they know it's tough when you dont know how. My uncle was really good, he could pick up a saingle grain of uncooked rice with the authentic kind.

Speaking of asian households mine was one for a short time. My mom worked at a Vietnamese nail boutiqe. She was as far as I know one of the only americans to ever get a job at one. So anyway a couple of the other nail techs were moving out into a new apartment I think and while they were in limbo between houses my mom let them live at our little place. So for maybe three weeks I had one guy(Andy) and two chicks(forget) sleeping on cots in my bedroom.

It was cool cause even though the two girls left usually before I woke up and stayed and cooked for us. He was an AWESOME cook and I was really surprised, because during lunch in those places all they would do is use a microwave in the back to heat up a package of ramen. So while he was there he taught me how to use them.

The main thing westerners do wrong when eating something with chopsticks is trying to treat it like a fork. You dont bring the food up to your face, you meet it halfway.

Exactly! If you watch anime enough, you realize that your supposed to either bend down to eat the food or simply lift the bowl up. Thats one way to prevent the broth from splashing all over you.
