Nobuo Uematsu Leaves Square Enix

Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu has left Square Enix and is set to found his own company. Reflecting on his busy recent schedule, which included a Final Fantasy concert tour throughout Japan this year, activities related to his rock band The Black Mages as well as composer duties for last year's Hanjuku Eiyuu Tai 3D and the upcoming Final Fantasy XII, Uematsu mentioned, it might be best for him to become a freelance composer. However, he mentioned that there is still a possibility his relationship with his former employer will continue. Looking back Uematsu said he really liked his compositions for Final Fantasy VI, VII and VIII and will never forget Final Fantasy VIII's main theme Eyes on Me.

It looks like the folks at Capcom Entertainment were only kidding when they sternly insisted over and over again that the GameCube action-thriller Resident Evil 4 would forever remain exclusive to Nintendo's console. The company on Sunday announced that, due to demand from users and shareholder influences, a PlayStation 2 build of Resident Evil 4 is now also in development.

The GameCube version will release on January 11 of next year in the US and just two weeks later in Japan. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 2 build is set to debut at the "end of 2005," according to the publisher.

The surprise announcement was posted to Capcom's official Japanese website over the weekend. Readers can check out the official release right here.

IGN on Monday morning contacted Capcom USA for further comments and clarification.

"When statements were made regarding GCN exclusivity, they were true at the time they were said. However, it was a recent executive decision from Capcom Japan to begin development of the game for the PS2," a spokesperson for the company maintained.

"In order to satisfy the demands from Resident Evil fans and Capcom's desire to introduce the series to new gamers worldwide, the decision was made to bring the title to PS2."

"The GameCube version will release on January 11th for the US. All efforts are focused on making the GCN game as big a success as possible. Also, gamers will only be able to play RE4 on the GCN for quite a while, so we encourage people to enjoy the exclusivity period."

Asked if the under-development PS2 version of RE4 would be dramatically different from the GCN one, Capcom said: "The PS2 version is currently in development so we can not comment on specifics at this time. However, Capcom's development team will certainly strive to maximize the special characteristics of the PS2 hardware as they develop the game for that system."

Capcom is not slamming the door on other, future ports, either. "The possibility of Resident Evil 4 coming to the Xbox has yet to be determined," a company rep replied when quizzed on the subject.

Microsoft today unveiled the special MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf Limited Edition. Available only in limited quantities, the special edition to the much-anticipated sequel will include two exclusive maps, as well as a "making-of" video feature giving you glimpse of what went on behind the MechAssault curtain.

The Limited Edition will be available on the same day as the regularly-flavored version -- December 28, 2004 -- for the same suggested price of $49.99. So what it really comes down to is: are you fast enough and downright charming enough to get the Limited Edition before they run out? Get ready.

Japan's reviewer's take on Halo 2

Halo 2 is seeing a near simultaneous release worldwide -- a big improvement from the original where gamers in Japan were forced to wait over half a year for the greatness of Bungie's landmark first person shooter. A Japanese release means Japanese reviews, and today we spotted the first one on the pages of Famitsu Xbox, Japan's largest (and only) Xbox exclusive magazine.

In an issue that included reviews for two Japanese titles, Dead or Alive Ultimate (10, 9, 9, Cool and Fatal Frame 2 (8, 7, 8, 9), Halo 2 was given the most favorable rating of the month with a 10, 9, 9 and 9.

The magazine's editor-in-chief scored the game a ten and had this to say: "The battles are totally intense. It's been a while since I've forgotten about sleep and food to this extent while playing a game." We'll skip the bit about the campaign mode in order continue the trend of avoiding spoilers, but the review finishes off with "Xbox users who play this will be truly happy. Seriously."

And those punks who gave the game a 9? Well, they didn't really have anything bad to say about the title, although some admitted to not being big on first person shooters. One reviewer, admitting his distaste for the genre added, "A game that's well put together is of course fun," and "This is too fun!".

Rather than copy and paste, or write anything myself, I'll just link you over to Penny-Arcade For the Nintendo vs. Suicide Girls report. God it's so damn pathetic and so incredibly funny.

More astute PlayStation 2 fans may have noticed that there's been next to nothing revealed about the upcoming action remake Altered Beast from SEGA for months. In fact, since E3 there's been almost no word at all except for a few tidbits that have appeared in Japanese gaming magazines like Famitsu and Jump. But there is a reason for this...

We've just received confirmation from sources close to SEGA that Altered Beast will not be published in North America at all. As SEGA is more particular about the titles it ships in the U.S. and Altered Beast has not been selected to be one of those games. Juu-Ou-Ki: Project Altered Beast, as it's known in Japan, is expected to hit Nippon stores this January. A European release is expected to follow next winter.

If you're an alien, the last thing you want to do is crash in the middle of FBI Headquarters. Unfortunately for the hero of O~3 Entertainment's first PS2 title, that's exactly what happen the stage is set for the upcoming Flash-turned-videogame Alien Hominid. And wouldn't you know it? It' gone gold!

Developed by the creators at The Behemoth, Alien Hominid is an old-school side-scrolling 2D shooter that draws comparisons to games like Metal Slug and, well, Metal Slug 2 here in the office. Originally created in 2002 as a Flash game for the popular website Newgrounds, Hominid has quickly risen to become one of the most popular Flash-related games on the Internet. A console version seemed like the next logical step.

"The response to Alien Hominid has been amazing," said Bill Gardner, CEO of O~3. "There is still room in the market for good, old fashioned, action games that are done right. It's no surprise this game has over six million downloads - it's truly original and addictive."

The years of clamoring from fans for a continuation of the Final Fantasy VII story seems to have paid off, as Square Enix has no fewer than three spin-offs in the works at the moment.

In addition to the already-announced Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children, FF fans now have Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII on the PSP to look forward to. As a mainly action-focused RPG, Crisis Core will also be somewhat of a departure from its namesake. Little is known about the title at the moment, other than it will ship sometime in 2006 and will probably have very pretty CGI.

According to the most recent issue of Weekly Famitsu, Princess Peach will be starring in her own game for the Nintendo DS. The side-scroller, entitled Super Princess Peach, is a departure for a character that has served mainly as a damsel in distress over the years.

As in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Peach's weapon of choice will be her trusty umbrella. How the game will utilize the DS's second screen and stylus is unknown at this time, as are any details on the title's release.

American Technology Research analyst P.C. McNealy today released an analysis of video game hardware sales for the latter part of 2004.

The report contains some surprising data, most notably that Playstation 2 sales have been down 20% from last year for the past two months. McNealy attributes the sales draught to a hardware shortage at several major retail chains as older PS2 units are phased out. These numbers are expected to hold steady before recieving a shot in the arm from the release of the PStwo in November, to be priced at $149.99.

Sony's loss has been Microsoft's gain, with Xbox claiming 41% of all console sales over the past few months, as compared to the PS2's 40%. The remaining 19% accounted for GameCube sales, which have been down almost a third from last year, though Nintendo can claim a strong showing by the new Metroid Prime bundle.

Despite high profile controversies and financial difficulties, Infinium Labs, makers of the forthcoming broadband console the Phantom, has revealed a brand new partnership with Sun Microystems; network infrastructure providers extraordinaire. Sun will create and maintain the on-demand network that will power the Phantom delivering the content that will be the bread and butter of the new system, including download streams for games and the like. Several contenders were reportedly considered before Sun got the gig.

"The Game Technologies Group's understanding of online gaming, along with the broad-based expertise of the company in delivering content and services over networks, makes Sun an ideal partner for us," enthused Kevin Bachus, president, Infinium Labs. "Sun's expertise in delivering content from back-end systems to the user will now become one of our biggest assets. We can focus on offering consumers choice, convenience and ease of use with our PC and Java-based game service."

Java technology will be used heavily in the Phantom system, and it is expected that the network will be switched on in 2005, pending the readiment of games and the like, naturally. We'll keep our eyes peeled on this for you.

Majesco announced today that it will publish next-generation content from developer Starbreeze, the talented folks in Sweden who brought us The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay on the Xbox (and soon, the PC).

The new content is being developed for "next generation console systems" and is expected to ship in 2006. Additional details have yet to be announced, though a 2006 release would hint at software for Xbox Next and PlayStation 3.

Says Johan Kristiansson, chief executive officer for Starbreeze, "Majesco has a fine reputation in the development community for partnering with its developers to assemble a single, cohesive team dedicated to producing quality products. We are excited to be working with them on creating content for the next generation of video game systems."

SEGA of America today sends Sonic Mega Collection Plus to retailers nationwide for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The Mega Collection brings together seven classic Sonic titles, including Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic The Hedgehog Spinball, and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. In addition, SEGA is including six classic Game Gear titles, plus Comix Zone and The Ooze from the Genesis.

"Since his introduction in 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog has been one of gaming's biggest stars," said Scott A. Steinberg of SEGA. "While he's evolved over the years, Sonic's 2D classics remain as fun to play today as they were over a decade ago."

According to a recent filing made by Sammy of America to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the company has recently filed for a brand new trademark known as Faster Than Speed, an arcade racer that runs on Atomiswave technology. Because of the indistinct nature of the patent, however, rumors have been swirling over the last couple of days that Faster Than Speed would be coming to consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation 2. We contacted representatives at Sammy to get the full story.

"It's only planned for the arcade market," remarked the Sammy representative. "We have no plans to port it to any home consoles at all."

For the unfamiliar, Faster Than Speed is a sit-down coin-op racer than boasts 12 different cars, 12 different tracks, and support for four-person simultaneous play. As you can tell by the statement above, however, the only place you'll be able to check it out is at your local arcade.

As gamers may remember, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time had Xbox Live support. It just happened to be in the form of Live Aware. That minor feature allowed Ubisoft to put a "Live Enabled" tag on the box. For Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Ubisoft Montreal is once again supporting Xbox Live -- only this time it's for real. While you won't directly compete with others over Xbox Live, two Xbox-exclusive modes offer online leaderboards and downloadable content. Once again, it's good to own an Xbox.

Time Attack and Arena Combat are not new concepts to gaming, but they fit very well into the world of POP. After all, Warrior Within is half combat, half platforming. These two modes offer the best of both worlds and just a little extra incentive to keep playing.

Expect one level for each mode at launch, with at least one more level downloadable for each. Even if you don't have Xbox Live, you can still access both games and play them, you just can't post your scores (or download the new content, obviously). Both modes are tucked away in the Xbox Live Menu along with the ability to access your Friends List while playing POP: WW.

Time Attack

Time Attack places you in a relatively short level and your goal is to get to the end before time runs out. Three checkpoints are spread throughout the level earning bonus time when passed through. The initial Time Attack level, The Boat Cemetery, is a slightly altered level from the main game and features a number of difficult jumps and wall runs. There are also a few enemies to battle as well and you'll want to take them on to fill your sand meter. Without sand you can't slow or rewind time, which means you'll have to be perfect with every jump -- not an easy thing to manage.

The Boat Cemetery is not for beginners. This is a tough level that kicks off with a slide down a banner with a leap to an unstable parallel bar to three consecutive pole jumps across the crumbling mast of a half-sunken ship. It gets tougher from there.

The level itself passes quickly. If you can beat it (and it may take a few tries), it will take roughly three minutes. Of course, the idea is to try repeatedly to better your score. This isn't just about learning the map, you also have a few critical decisions throughout the run that can affect your time. For instance, do you battle all of the enemies or try and run past them for a faster time? Killing enemies earns extra sand, which can lead to bonus points. But is it worth the time off the clock? Do you stop and pick up a second weapon that you can launch at the Silhouette waiting near the exit for a quick one-shot kill?

Should you complete the level, your score is uploaded online for international rankings. You can also check out your ranking against everyone on your Friends List for extra bragging rights.

Arena Combat

If leaping across platforms isn't your thing, you can always check out the non-stop combat of the Arena mode. Taking place in the Prison Complex, gamers must face down three waves of enemies, defeating them all before time runs out. Each wave is successively tougher, but even the first wave is tough as it features a Spike Beast (think feral exploding porcupine dog). The second wave spotlights invisible Raiders with the last wave highlighted by a pair of Silhouettes.

Weapon racks line the wall, offering a nice selection of secondary swords and axes. Four pillars mark the main combat area and will be your best friend, as you'll want to swing on these often for exceptional violence. This is the perfect room to fight as it's confined, but suited to the Prince's style of swordplay.

Scoring takes into account time left after each wave, unused collected sands, and health remaining at the end of the fracas.

Earlier today Microsoft send out a short notice to let us know that they are delaying Rare's platform title Kameo: Elements of Power in order to "incorporate several new features that we expect will further enhance the overall gameplay."

In Kameo: Elements of Power you have the ability to morph in real time into a wide variety of creatures, each with its own strengths and fighting style. To fight the hordes of evil, players will strategically employ 18 elemental monsters from each of the Six Elements of Power: Plant, Water, Rock, Ice, Wind and Fire. Choose a plant that boxes for up-close combat, a rock monster to launch a silo of rocks, or a wind monster that specializes in ground-to-air attacks. Fast-paced action, epic-style battles and massive boss encounters will require players to think and act quickly using their boundless monster repertoire.

Kameo: Elements of Power was initially expected in 2003, then scheduled for January 2005, and now pushed back again, with no new release date announced.
