Gerry Anderson Prods. has teamed with Sony Pictures Ent. and Sony Wonder, the family and children's entertainment division of newly merged Sony BMG Music Ent., to launch 26 episodes of the CG-animated television series GERRY ANDERSON'S NEW CAPTAIN SCARLET, which is in production at Pinewood Studios outside of London. TriMedia Ent. Group was instrumental in facilitating the arrangement between Gerry Anderson Prods. and Sony Wonder, and will participate in all revenue streams which result from the partnership.
Sony Wonder spearheaded the arrangement between Gerry Anderson Prods. and the multiple Sony entities that are to participate in the exploitation of the new series. Sony Pictures Television Int’l launched the broadcast sale of the series for international territories at MIPCOM 2004. Sony Pictures Television will represent the series in the U.S. broadcast market and Sony Pictures Consumer Products will lead the development of licensing and merchandising efforts outside of the U.K. Sony Wonder will distribute the series on video and DVD and will work with legendary music producer Chris Schwartz's TriMedia Ent. Group to develop and release CAPTAIN SCARLET-based soundtrack recordings.
"The debut of the new and updated GERRY ANDERSON'S NEW CAPTAIN SCARLET will mark the return of one of the most exciting and influential programs in the history of children's television," commented David Pierce, evp/gm, Sony Wonder. "The series combines exciting plot lines and time tested characters such as Captain Scarlet and Captain Black with up-to-the-minute CGI animation techniques, and the results are nothing less than spectacular. We anticipate that GERRY ANDERSON'S NEW CAPTAIN SCARLET will be embraced by consumers around the world, and we're delighted to be working with Gerry Anderson, as well as with the Sony Pictures Ent. team, on the roll-out of this exciting new series."
"Gerry Anderson is a legendary producer with a loyal audience worldwide," said Peter Iacono, evp distribution, Sony Pictures Television International. "CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS was a phenomenal success and we believe that audiences around the world will embrace his innovative use of CGI animation in GERRY ANDERSON'S NEW CAPTAIN SCARLET, just as he captured the imaginations of a generation with the original."
An update of the classic 1960s supermarionation series CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS, GERRY ANDERSON'S NEW CAPTAIN SCARLET follows Spectrum agents Captain Scarlet and Captain Black after they are sent to investigate mysterious alien signals, which leads to Captain Black mistakenly firing an attack. The men are destroyed after the Mysterons retaliate, only to be recreated as agents of evil to destroy Earth. After Black returns from the grave to lead the alien campaign, Scarlet escapes the Mysterons' influence and regains control of his human psyche. But, he also possesses a true alien quality, he's indestructible.

According the Drudge Report, actor and political activist Sean Penn has written an angry letter to Matt Stone and Trey Parker, concerning their making Team America: World Police. An excerpt from the letter includes, "You guys are talented young guys but alas, primarily young guys. It's all well to joke about me or whomever you choose. Not so well, to encourage irresponsibility that will ultimately lead to the disembowelment, mutilation, exploitation, and death of innocent people throughout the world." Perhaps time will tell if the letter was truly being penned by Penn. Sneak previews are showing today for Team America: World Police, while the movie will open nationwide next weekend.
Penn has such a huge damned ego. Somebody should take him down a notch or two. Or just take him down... with a notched bat. Several of them. Repeatedly.

Viacom announced a major executive reorganization today, naming Leigh Anne Brodsky to oversee licensing and merchandising for MTV Networks International, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, Paramount, TV Land and Spike TV, and Al Weber to oversee live, licensed entertainment for the same brands and properties. Brodsky will get the title of President, Nickelodeon and Viacom Consumer Products; Weber will be President, Viacom Recreation. Both will report to Nickelodeon Enterprises president Jeffrey Dunn.
The shuffle comes as a result of the recent integration of Paramount Parks and Viacom Consumer Products. When Brando died, he left behind an embarassing voice track for an awful looking animated film. Apparently Kal-El is following in Jor-El's footsteps... According to the New Jersey Star-Ledger:
Christopher Reeve's last legacy to film will be an animated children's feature by IDT that is expected to hit theaters in 2006. The 52-year-old actor was in the midst of directing an animated feature tentatively called "Yankee Irving" about a poor boy in the Depression who befriends Babe Ruth and delivers a game-winning hit for the Yankees. Animation was a perfect fit for Reeve because there was no need to go on location. IDT rigged up two large computer screens in Reeve's home in Connecticut so he could monitor work done in the company's studios in Newark, Canada and Israel.

Angry Alien Productions' 30 Second Bunnies Theatre series will run in a special marathon on STARZ! from October 30 at 9PM to October 31 at midnight called the "Hare-Raising Halloween Marathon." STARZ! has commissioned five Bunnies interstitial pieces, each 10-15 seconds long, promoting the marathon and the re-enactments. The movies Freddy vs. Jason, Scream, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 remake) will be included in the marathon.
Fortitude Films has bought a studio in Burbank, California, and tapped legendary animator/director/producer to turn it into a full-service animation division, overseeing development of 2D and 3D features and series projects.
Lisa Maria Butkiewicz, the creative head for Fortitutde Films, said, "Phil Roman brings a wealth of experience in business, coupled with creative talent that is second to none. He has worked on some of the biggest animation success stories of all time."
Roman garnered several Emmy Awards for mega hit properties THE SIMPSONS, KING OF THE HILL and various GARFIELD specials under the Film Roman banner. Founded in 1984 with four employees, Film Roman went public in 1996 with a workforce of more than 500. Roman departed a few years later to re-start under his own shingle in 1999 while his original company is now owned by IDT Entertainment. Roman will continue to develop and produce projects through Phil Roman Ent. in Burbank.
Butkiewicz’ producing partner, Steve Delaportas, said, "Phil Roman has been a cornerstone in American animation for years, we’re just thrilled that he can be part of Fortitude’s future."
Roman, a Los Angeles Entrepreneur of the Year winner, told AWN he admired Delaportas’ entrepreneurial initiatives, calling him a great businessman covering all the bases that includes distribution and licensing and merchandising capabilities within his other business enterprises. Even though the animation field seems saturated, Roman said Delaporta has correctly determined, “There is a need in specialized areas, such as Christian and Latino markets for animated entertainment.
“Today you must do things in a non-traditional way, Roman offered. “The networks have taken away the business, insisting on owning everything.
“We are building something from the ground up, which is exactly what I like to do, he said. Roman said he has tremendous respect for Butkiewicz and Delaportas, and is looking forward to being partners with them in the new venture. They were introduced by Dr. Ted Baehr, a leading figure in the Christian entertainment/publishing arena.
Roman will work out of both companies, keeping his Phil Roman Ent. offices, which has a number of commitments, including a series of interstitials currently in production.
