Bungie employees take a long overdue and much deserved vacation after sending Halo 2 off to the duplicator to be mass produced.
Frankie @ bungie.net wrote:
It isn't literally the last update of course, since there's lots to do and say between now and November 9th, but I can honestly say that there's no more updating on the progress of the game, since the game is done. Finished and shipped to a nebulous region known as RTC (Release To Certification) where it will be dumped from eight digital tapes onto a DVD and go through some final testing. Usually that's just a matter of routine, but we'll be watching our email carefully through next week…

There are still many steps between now and the game's arrival on shelves, including the not-insignificant process of actually manufacturing MILLIONS of copies of the game.

Folks are taking off on vacation. Most people will take a week or two, some up to a month, but almost everyone will be back here in time for the game launch, to witness it first hand. Keep an eye out for roving Bungie employees at midnight madness events here in Washington. We wanna see the folks that love our game, up close, personal, and maybe just a little bit stalky. You'll know us by our lack of hygiene.

Sketch and I are now fully swamped with PR and marketing stuff, as the wave of publicity and promotion enters its main phase. We'll be traveling to places good and bad, and basically being used, abused and spat out by the dainty PR ladies (yes, that includes you Shon).

We're also entering our busiest phase of site development. The sadly neglected Bungie.net is about to emerge like a butterfly from a chrysalis as we work towards the full integration of Halo 2 and bungie.net. This, for example, is where you need to come to build, maintain and track your clan, although clan creation is built into the game.

Halo 2, yet another reason why I'm a proud Xbox owner.

Super Mario 64 DS will be the only Nintendo game available when the Nintendo DS ships this November, according to today's announcement of launch software for the new portable console. To help fill the gap, new DS systems will come with a free demo of Metroid Prime: Hunters.

Those fearing a sparse launch will also have a wider number of third party games to choose from. Electronic Arts will be providing versions of Madden, Tiger Woods, and Sims spin-off The Urbz. Other notable franchises include Rayman DS from Ubisoft, along with Ridge Racer DS and Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits from Namco.

New details were also released on some of the titles - Ridge Racer will have touch screen control, while Madden will use the second screen to show a wide angle of all 22 players. No specific prices were given for software, but Nintendo said its own titles would retail for "as low as $29.99."

A complete list of games listed to arrive in the "launch window" follows, along with the latest picture from Metroid Prime: Hunters.

* Super Mario 64 DS (Nintendo)
* Madden NFL 2005 (EA)
* Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf (EA)
* The Urbz: Sims in the City (EA)
* Unannounced title (Activision)
* Ping Pals (THQ)
* Feel the Magic: XY/XX (Sega)
* Rayman DS (Ubisoft)
* Asphalt Urban GT (Ubisoft)
* Ridge Racer DS (Namco)
* Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits (Namco)

Midway announced today that it has acquired Austin, Texas-based development studio Inevitable Entertainment Inc., the folks currently working on Area 51.

A few weeks back, Midway had already announced plans to expand and that it was looking into opening a studio in Texas.

Midway president and chief executive officer David F. Zucker commented, "In acquiring Inevitable Entertainment, we have added an extremely creative development group to our product development organization and furthered our ability to deliver high-quality, compelling content. Our increased internal product development capabilities offer an important balance and blend with our external development partners, and enable us to continue to publish critically and commercially successful software for current and future systems."

Inevitable Entertainment was established in 2000, gained fame for developing the first PS2 online multiplayer game, Tribes Aerial Assault, and are currently working on Midway's AREA 51, scheduled for release in the first half of 2005.

Microsoft Game Studios today announced that Halo 2 has gone gold and will ship simultaneously over three days to 27 countries in eight languages.

As previously announced Halo 2 will be available on November 9 throughout North and South America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The sequel to the award-winning Halo: Combat Evolved, will be available in France, Belgium and Switzerland on November 10, as well as in Japan and the rest of Europe on November 11. Halo 2 is being localized in eight languages including English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (traditional), Spanish, French, German and Italian.

Halo 2 has been shipped to RTC (Release To Certification) where it will be transfered from eight digital tapes onto a DVD and go through some final testing, which usually takes about a week, and then millions of copies are going to be made for all the Halo hungry fans out there.

In Halo 2, the action picks up where the first game ended. Master Chief, with the help of a small group of marines, has destroyed the religious artifact and artificial world known as Halo, and is making his way back to Earth. Upon arrival, he and the last surviving Earth forces will mount a titanic final struggle against the marauding Covenant armada.

Bungie.net is going to be fully integrated with Halo 2. For example, is where you need to come to build, maintain and track your clan, although clan creation is built into the game.

Midway announced today that it has shipped more than one million Mortal Kombat: Deception units to retail stores across North America.

"Mortal Kombat is clearly a franchise that continues to deliver innovative gameplay along with the hardcore, intense fighting action that fans have come to know and love over the past 12 years," said Steve Allison, chief marketing officer, Midway. "We're extremely pleased to see that Deception has been received in such a positive light by both the media and consumers since we first announced the title in March. It's a true testament to the Mortal Kombat team's hard work and dedication that consumer interest is high enough to make Deception the fastest selling game in Midway's history."

Mortal Kombat: Deception delivers the most ambitious fighting game to-date, providing players with four independent gameplay modes, multiple new fatalities per character, as well as earning the title of the first-ever 3D fighting game playable online both via PS2 broadband and Xbox Live. The game also features lightning-fast, hand-to-hand and special weapons combat, secret and returning characters, new moves and combinations with death-dealing battles and all-new life-threatening environments.

Mortal Kombat: Deception is available for PS2 and Xbox, and the GameCube edition is expected early 2005.

Sega bringing classics to PS2

At an otherwise uneventful press event held yesterday in San Francisco, Sega announced that it will publish Sega Classics Collection in the US. Due in January 2005 for the PlayStation 2, the title will contain remade versions of 10 of Sega's classic arcade and console games: Outrun, Golden Axe, Space Harrier, Columns, Fantasy Zone, Virtua Racer, Decathlete, Alien Syndrome, Monaco GP, and Bonanza Bros. & Tant R.

The collection was originally under the auspices of publisher Conspiracy Entertainment. In February 2005, Conspiracy is scheduled to release Sega Ages: Phantasy Star Trilogy, with remade versions of the Phantasy Star I, II, and IV role-playing games that were originally released on Sega's Master System and Genesis consoles.

In Japan, the games were released individually as part of the Sega Ages collection at 2,500 yen ($23) each. While a price point for Sega Classics Collection has not yet been determined, Phantasy Star Trilogy will retail for $19.99.

In what has got to be classified as truly weird, and probably downright non-functional, Nuby Tech is developing a new controller for the Nintendo Gamecube which is inspired by the upcoming Resident Evil 4. While special game-based controllers are nothing out of the ordinary, usually it is just a different color scheme with controller remaining pretty much the same. Not so here, as my standard Gamecube controller looks nothing like a chainsaw. . . . Look for the controller in stores in January.

Microsoft Corporate Vice President Peter Moore is pretty adamant about his company's chances in the next generation hardware battle. In an interview with Japan's Nikkei Business newspaper, Moore comments, "We won't lose with the next generation system. We have no intention of losing."

Later in the interview, Moore reveals some interesting facts about the Xbox's share of the worldwide gaming market. While Xbox hasn't managed more than a small single-digit percentage of the Japanese market, the system managed to climb from 23% of the North American market in June of 2003 to 33% in June of this year, according to the Nikkei article. At this, Moore reveals, "The fact that it's heating up has big meaning for the next generation."

Moore points to three reasons for the Xbox's failure in Japan this generation. He believes that because the system is the size of a VCR, its design was not accepted by the Japanese. Software for the system was inadequate and did not catch the eyes of consumers. Finally, perhaps the fatal blow, was Microsoft's arrival to the market two years after the PS2.

Commenting on the next generation, Moore says, "We'll not repeat these mistakes next time." Microsoft plans to learn from the mistakes, and will be starting Xbox 2's design from scratch, making it smaller and simpler. Moore plans for strong software from the start, along with titles targeting the Japanese market. Also, Moore reveals once again, "We will not be later than our rivals."

Moore also reveals one hint at progress on game development for the next generation system. Apparently, the company has already finished distributing support tools for game development to software companies. It's unclear if these are specific Xbox 2 development tools, or just tools to get started with work on machines that reflect the Xbox 2's planned specifications.

Commenting on Sony Computer Entertainment's recent announcement of the Blu-Ray storage format for the PS2, Moore once again states how the Xbox is a game machine. The company plans for stronger Online gameplay than before and will offer broadband-based Online gameplay from the start. The next generation will see the continuation of voice-based communication and other features with the same ease of use.

Finally, Moore offers a hint at Microsoft's policy of sticking out the console wars, stating "The winner in the game industry is not decided in one generation."

Even as the ever-so-naughty adventure/mini-game title ships to stores this week in North America, Australian authorities have effectively banned Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude from sale in the country.

Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification, essentially the equivalent of the ESRB here in the States, has denied certification to Larry, objecting to the game's "obscured or implied sexual activity and obscured and partial nudity involving stylised animated characters."

In Australia, a game without certification may not be legally sold.

Just weeks before, the Office withdrew classification of Manhunt, removing Rockstar's gritty action title from shelves as well.

Ironically, almost a year after a malicious hacker invaded Valve's network, stole Half-Life 2 source code, and leaked it on the net, hackers are at it again.

Last night the full version of Bungie's sci-fi first-person shooter Halo 2 was leaked and is available on various peer-to-peer (bittorrent) networks, Usenet groups or ftp sites.

The warezed Halo 2 game is a PAL version, with French speech and English subtitles, so it would be rather safe to assume that it originates from Europe.

The download weighs in at a whopping 3 gigs, but the size doesn't seem to be a deterrent, as a brief check of one known bittorrent stream showed that it was already being downloaded by 25,000 people.

Microsoft is already aware of this situation and is downplaying its significance by saying that even though it is the final version, the leaked Halo 2 will not allow people to access Xbox Live.

Here is the Microsoft official comment :

"Microsoft has learned that a version of Halo 2 has been posted to various newsgroups and web sites. We consider downloading this code or making it available for others to download as theft.

"We are currently investigating the source of this leak with the appropriate authorities. Pending the result of our investigation, we do not have further comment. Microsoft takes the integrity of its intellectual property extremely seriously, and we are aggressively pursuing the source of this illegal act.

"The launch of Halo 2 worldwide remains unaffected.

"We're asking anyone with information on the source of this leak to contact Microsoft at 1-800-RULEGIT or send email to piracy@microsoft.com."

Microsoft announced today that it is putting together a very sweet deal for holiday shoppers (or just the few still unfortunate enough not to have an Xbox yet). Starting October 31, you'll be able to pick up an Xbox bundled with NCAA Football 2005, Top Spin, and two months of free Xbox Live -- all for $149.99.

We think this is a pretty snazzy way to give the Xbox love this holiday season, as both titles are solid and there's really nothing better than Xbox Live for getting your game on online. Plus, it's an Xbox. Maybe we're biased, but these days, Microsoft's console's got it going on.

"This is the most exciting holiday season yet for video gamers and Xbox fans," says Mitch Koch, vice president, worldwide retail sales and marketing for Microsoft's home and entertainment division. "Not only are we offering a tremendous value to gamers with the holiday offer, but Xbox has the most expansive and entertaining library of games this season on any platform, with titles like Halo 2, Fable, and MechAssault 2 from [Microsoft Game Studios], Need for Speed Underground 2 from EA, and Dead or Alive Ultimate from Tecmo."

Gameindustry.biz is reporting that the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) organization confirmed today that Microsoft CEO Bill Gates will be giving the pre-show keynote speech in Las Vegas on January 5th next year.

Originally the Xbox 2 announcement was expected to have happened at Game Developer's Conference a few months ago, but since that did not take place it's now expected to happen during CES. In 2000, Gates switched around the order when he was expected to make the announcement at the CES, but due to circumstances, ended up doing so at the GDC.

It is widely known that several, key Microsoft development partners already have an early version of the Xbox 2 development platform available to work on their upcoming titles. The platform, thus far, is based on IBM's Power5 CPU architecture and ATI's next-generation Radeon graphics card.
