After reading how most of us agree that fansubs are a bad thing I realized that we agreed on something but all of us had different reasons for believing the way we do. We all have different personal ethical codes by which we live our lives and I'm curious what's the basis behind yours? Could it stand up to being questioned without you getting irrational? Do you believe in Personal Egoism? Maybe your a stern believer in Kant's Duty Ethics, or pehaps Ross' Prima Facie? Maybe Act Utilitarianism? Maybe your a concequentialist? More than likely your a combination of some of these and some I didn't name off.

Anyway, I would like to know the ethical reasoning behind your stance on certain issues and/or life in general. We can start with a question going around the board already.

Are you for or against Fansubs? What is your reasoning behind your stance?

I want to get at least 24 hours inbetween my ethics final and my response before I answer my own question. By the way; other qeustions will be asked hopefully every week or so.

I only believe in fansubbing titles that will most likely not make it to the states for a long time. Case in point: I loved Star Ocean 2 for the psx, and when I heard they made an anime for it I jumped for joy. Then I realised it was never gonna make it over here so I cried for a couple of hours only to find that some guys were fansubbing it. 6 weeks later after downloading every episode(damn 56k) I treated myself with its goodness. Long story short fansubbing is ok for the animes that will never make it here. Oh by the way*points at avatar* you guys should check out Star Ocean EX, i'm like one of 5 people who's seen it.

I believe in giving mad props to those who do good/impressive things. I know that I can't stop fansubbing, and I support partial 'subs. I think it's a good idea to allow people to get a taste for something before they're expected to shell out money for it.

If there is no way that something is going to get translated other than fansubs, I'm slightly in favor of subbing the entire thing. I think the company should get money for making a popular product, but, if they don't make it available to certain markets, there is no way for me to support them in their efforts, so it kind of doesn't matter.

Once I learn Japanese, though, I will not download an entire series.

My logic is this: by downloading anime, it makes it so that you don't watch it on TV when (and if) it comes. Less viewers = lower ratings. Lower ratings = lower profits for the network. Lower profits = less anime in the future, since the company wants to maximize profits, not minimize. Less anime in future = unhappy me.

The only episode I ever downloaded was an ep of DBZ that I missed a week ago. That's it. I missed it during the day, and dled it so I wouldn't be out of the loop. I've been watching that show so long and have seen the reruns so many times that I figure I'm owed that much.

Other than something like that, however, I feel that dling anime, and especially fansubs, is counterproductive. Like Affirmative Action or using a screen door for ventilation in a submarine. So I guess in this area of life, my motives are self serving.

Ah, but what about those animes that you want to see, but they're not on TV, and not in your video rental outlet, and you're not sure you want to pay $60 for it? What would you do in that circumstance?

Case in point for me is Ah! My Goddess. I'm the first person I know to become addicted to it, and I am getting it in a couple of weeks. I would not have decided to get it if I hadn't downloaded it first. (Heck, if it weren't for AMVs, I wouldn't have known about it) The point for me is that, if it's good, I will buy it. If not, I delete it.

How do I decide whether to buy something? I hit Google, Usenet (rec.arts.anime.misc) and messageboards like this one.
I usually go on reviews of the series, word-of-mouth recommendations from other fans, and more recently, the production staff involved. Hasn't failed me yet. *crosses fingers*

thats how I get my anime, word of mouth is much better than any other technique I've tried. let me just tell you this: using a divining rod is vastly overrated.

I use a reverse divining rod for stuff on TV. I call it a "remote control," and the less it points at something, the better it tends to be. Amazing, no?

But, I'm not very empathic, so I can't tell if I'll enjoy something from someone else's perspective. I'm really a "try before you buy" kind of guy (rhyme!=). Unfortunately, I have no access to temporary anime other than CN and KaZaA. Video rental stores in Vegas don't seem to understand that anime gets more adult than SanRio. I don't consider downloading an episode to see if the show is good stealing. But, I've already expressed my views and actions enough here, so I'll stop babbling.

Ok; next question: Can your ethical code allow the taking of human life? How about in this situation?

A man breaks into your home and holds a gun to your parents head. You walk in and he says "If you do not kill me I will kill them" then tosses you a gun. What do you do? What if instead of your parents it was just a stranger in, say, a grocery store? Would it be any different? How would you justify your actions?

Either way you're killing someone. If you don't shoot, he kills a man, and it's your fault that he killed the man since you did nothing to stop him. If you DO shoot him, then you kill HIM (unless you're a good shot and DON'T kill him yet deter him FROM killing.)

Either way, you're screwed. If you kill him, you at least save an innocent.

Gee, I wonder what brought this question to mind... Wink

For me, yes. To protect myself or my loved ones from harm, I have no qualms about pulling the trigger in the moment. I might hate myself for a while afterwards, though. It's a heavy load to bear (seen it happen), and I hope I never have to. Sad

If someone's threatening to kill someone else, chances are pretty good that I'll see the presumed killer's life as worth less than the person they're trying to kill. I have this "universal impact" scale that I use to determine whether doing something is right or wrong. Killing the guy would likely have not neraly as bad effect as him killing the other guy.
Oh and if you really want a rant on the values and probable values in life, check out http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17475 that thread there. I said the exact same things in slightly different words 3 or 4 times at least in the thread and another 3 or 4 times in PMs later and people still don't get it. Sigh...
As for fansubs, what FAK said. Me and him almost universally share beliefs. Kinda scary when you think about it.[/url]

I say shoot the guy. You're not going to save the others, unless you're REALLY good or REALLY lucky and manage to kill him before he gets the chance to pull the trigger. If he wants to die, he'll likely spasm when you hit him. If he's a little afraid, he's likely to shoot when you aim his way. The innocent bystander is probably going to die either way, but if you shoot him, you might feel better.

I know I'd feel better, because I'm not empathetic. Of course, the legal issues afterwards may be a little hectic/traumatic, but what the hell.

Actually, we do. John and I have both given up on Chief Delphi, because it's a waste of our time. We don't have to put up with as many nasty, triksy hobbittses.
