And the Pixar-Disney merger gets even better... Very Happy

From Toon Zone:

Quote:
A report at Jim Hill Media is deducing that Enchanted, a new hybrid animated/live-action movie, will resurrect the currently moribund Disney hand-drawn animation division. Hill states that the movie, which features an animated fairy-tale princess flung into live-action modern-day Manhattan by an evil queen, will use traditional hand-drawn animation for its fairy-tale segments. Prior reports expected that the animated sequences would be CGI. Many more details, including the roles Pixar's John Lasseter and Ed Catmull are playing, are included in the linked article.

Here's the Jim Hill Media link.

FUNimation Makes First Sale of Syndicated Anime Block
March 24, 2006

FUNimation has announced the first sale of a new two-hour syndicated anime programming block. CoLours, "America's First Multicultural Television Network," will carry two hours of anime programming from FUNimation seven days a week from 10 p.m. to midnight ET.

Programming plans for the block are still being finalized. According to a FUNimation spokesperson, the following titles are under consideration for inclusion in the block: Kodocha, Case Closed, Galaxy Railways, Yu Yu Hakusho, Tenchi Muyo! GXP, Kiddy Grade, Blue Gender, and Baki the Grappler. Weeknight and weekend night programming may vary and target different demographic groups.

The CoLours TV Network is available in 12 million U.S. cable and satellite households. It is part of DISH Network's basic satellite package.

The programming block is being distributed by OlympuSAT, which is also distributing FUNimations nascent cable channel (see "FUNimation Launches Cable Channel").

DreamWorks has feet of clay
'Wallace' follows soft B.O. with slow DVD sales
By BEN FRITZ, Daily Variety

"Madagascar" was no "Shrek 2" on DVD, and "Wallace & Gromit" wasn't even close to "Shark Tale" in theaters, causing DreamWorks Animation profits to plunge 67% in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, Paramount will screen DreamWorks Animation's summer tentpole "Over the Hedge" next Thursday at ShoWest.

With a weak performance on home video matching disappointing domestic grosses, DWA took its second writedown for "Wallace," which was critically acclaimed and won the Oscar for animated feature but failed to capture American audiences' interest, grossing just $56.1 million. The DVD was released this quarter and sales figures aren't yet available, but the company took a writedown of $25.1 million in the fourth quarter on weak sales.

In the third quarter, DWA took a $3.9 million charge due to the weak domestic theatrical performances, which impacted other ancillaries, such as TV rights.

The movie did much better overseas, grossing $130.3 million.

"Madagascar" did well in home video, selling 14.2 million units worldwide in its first seven weeks of release. It was the second best-selling DVD of 2005 but still nowhere close to the 34 million units "Shrek 2" sold in 2004.

However, DWA is undoubtedly hoping for better library performance from the newer picture after heavier than expected returns on "Shrek 2" in the first quarter last year led to a crisis of confidence among investors that rocked the company.

With revenue from the $500 million-plus worldwide theatrical release last May flowing in from distributor DreamWorks, as well as home video revenues, "Madagascar" contributed $152.3 million for the quarter.

That's 88% of the company's total $172.9 million in revenue, which also included $5.7 million from "Shark Tale" and $14.9 million from other library titles.

For the full year, DreamWorks Animation earned $104.6 million on revenue of $462.3 million, down 69% and 57%, respectively, from 2004.

The company didn't provide guidance for 2006, but noted that it doesn't expect significant earnings or revenue until the fourth quarter, when revenue from the May release of "Over the Hedge" should start flowing. DreamWorks Animation doesn't get revenue from theatrical releases until its distributor -- previously DreamWorks, now Paramount -- recoups costs, which can take several months.

The only other 2006 release is November's "Flushed Away," which won't generate much revenue until next year.

DreamWorks Animation is taking on some costs related to payroll and technology previously handled by DreamWorks live action, but Paramount will reimburse it for those costs with a cash payment of $11 million for 2006.

CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was criticized last year for overhyping DWA releases, was remarkably modest about the upcoming slate. Asked on a conference call with analysts about "Over the Hedge" and "Flushed Away," he simply said: "They're fine."

DreamWorks Animation shares were up 1% at $26.86 before earnings were announced, but were down 3% in after-hours trading.

Nickelodeon to open own toon lab
Zarghami unveils plans for Burbank-based Inkubators
By ROBERT RIDDELL, Daily Variety

Nickelodeon is embracing the changing shape of the kidvid industry, and is launching an animation lab to prove it.

At its gaudy upfront breakfast in New York's Nokia Theatre on Thursday morning (which featured a musical performance by Alicia Keys), Nick president Cyma Zarghami unveiled plans for "Inkubators", an animation site set to be based out of the cabler's current studios in Burbank. Lab is designed to develop properties for emerging platforms, including broadband, wireless, portable video devices, online and gaming.

"The first Nickelodeon generation of kids grew up in a video democracy; this next generation is platform agnostic," Zarghami said.

The network's broadcasts to kids go out over 15 different platforms, but much of that content is currently taken from their TV programming.

Instead, Nick wants to build a multimillion-dollar slate of original content specifically designed for what it calls "multi-splatforms."

Examples include "Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!", a video podcast of preschooler programming. Podcast features a series of musical animation shorts about a character called Wubbzy and his two friends Widget and Walden that will be distributed on portable video devices such as iPods, cell phones and Playstation Portables.

The network will produce more than 100 games for Nick.com. Games provide boffo traffic for the site, with 152 million game plays so far this year.

Zarghami also disclosed that 254 episodes will premiere on TV during the 2006-07 season, some of which have been previously developed on alternative platforms.

New series on the slate include "Mr. Meaty," an animated comedy about two teenage slackers that originally appeared as a series of shorts on the cabler's broadband platform TurboNick; "Barnyard," a CGI skein created by Steve Oedekerk and developed from the upcoming feature film of the same title; and "Downward Doghouse," an animated show co-produced with Wang Films that promises to introduce preschoolers to aspects of Chinese culture through the lens of five-year-old Kai-lan.

Teen series "The Lil' JJ Show," featuring young star Lil' JJ, is also in development and will join live actioners "Zoey 101" and "Unfabulous," both of which have been greenlit for second series.

Disney plays the dating game
CGI toon 'Robinsons' pushed back to next March
By BEN FRITZ, Daily Variety

Disney has staked dates for its major releases through the end of 2007, including laying claim to Memorial Day next year for the third "Pirates of the Caribbean."

But the studio has blinked on its major holiday release, CGI toon "Meet the Robinsons," pushing it back to next March.

Disney head of distribution Chuck Viane said a benefit of delaying "Robinsons" to March 30, 2007, will be to allow time for more screens to be converted to digital. Disney is using the technology to play "Robinsons" in 3-D, which it hopes will draw bigger audiences and justify higher ticket prices. "Chicken Little" had success on a handful of digital 3-D screens in November.

The delay also comes as Pixar chiefs Ed Catmull and John Lasseter have recently started to review Disney's animation slate in anticipation of taking over Disney's toon unit once the Pixar acquisition is complete.

There currently aren't any toons set for release in December. The closest one is DreamWorks Animation's "Flushed Away," which bows Nov. 3.

However, "Meet the Robinsons" has animated competition on its new date: Warner Bros. has dated "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," which it just picked up for distribution, the same day.

Disney is also aggressively dating its other big toon for 2007, the Pixar-produced "Ratatouille." The movie release has been set for June 29, where it will face off against Universal comedy "Evan Almighty." Five days later, on July 4, Paramount is planning to bow "Transformers."

Only problem: Networks that significantly alter their programming or format run the risk of angering cable operators for deviating from their agreed-upon programming mission. "This is going to be a problem," said cable distribution consultant Cathy Rasenberger. "To add live action to a network that's defined by cartoons may be impossible to do given the content restrictions in their agreements. Allowing this is totally up to the operators. It just sounds like a major deviation."

But cable operators were split on whether such changes could cause a conflict. "We always closely watch what programmers do, especially if they make changes that take them away from how they sold us the service," said David Grabert, spokesman for Cox. "This is the first we've heard of these plans, but if we feel like they're going too far, we'll let them know."

A spokesperson for another multiple system operator said Cartoon shouldn't worry.

"Their contract with us doesn't stipulate against live action," the spokesperson said. "As long as the change doesn't alter the spirit of the channel, they're fine."

The Mostly Cartoon Network did not return a call for comment by press time.

Another step closer to "The CN"... by taking the easy path. Sad

"Variety" chimes in:
Quote:
"Major changes are in store for Cartoon Network, which will step outside its charter for the first time and into live-action programming. Cartoon Network has opened its doors to the unanimated world as part of a larger development department expansion that includes select live-action theatrical movie buys and the creation of a "longform unit" (Specializes in TV programming that is longer than an hour in duration; a made for TV movie)...
Changes arrive as Cartoon Network continues to trail competitors Nickelodeon and Disney in the total day race for kids 6-11. First quarter results have Nick ensconced in the top spot and Cartoon lagging Disney by a little more than 100,000 viewers in the demo. CN is also off 17% in primetime from first quarter 2005 but has seen Saturday morning success with new originals "Ben 10" and "My Gym Partner Is a Monkey."...

Cartoon has been testing the performance of live-action features like "Batman," "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" and "Ace Ventura" on air since late last year. Most recently, cabler drew a big 2.3 million viewers to a showing of the Jim Carrey comedy "Dumb and Dumber" on Friday. CN will make an event out of the "Spider-Man" premiere later this summer...

Senior VP Michael Ouweleen points out that certain comedies on network TV, including "Arrested Development" and "Scrubs," are "by and large live-action cartoons. There's no reason we couldn't do something similar for kids."

And while certain cartoons such as "SpongeBob SquarePants" continue to attract big crowds, a live-action launch like Disney Channel's "Hannah Montana" can attract even more attention. "Hannah" also drew a big 5.4 million (2.3 million kids 6-11) during its premiere showing two weeks ago. Cartoon's top shows "Ben 10" and "My Gym Partner..." have averaged 680,000 and 647,000 viewers in the demo, respectively."

So no word on Goonies success, but 2.3 Mil for Dumb and Dumber? Shocked (which so accurately describes my opinion of the recent programming changes... Wink )

As I posted on the front page:

Quote:
4Kids has announced that they will be forming a secondary branch called "4Sight," which will focus on marketing and licensing products to tweens, teens, and adults. As of now, the brand will focus on existing brands such as the Royal Air Force and the American Kennel Club. 4Kids' anime properties, such as One Piece and Yu-Gi-Oh!, are not currently under the banner, but they are not completely ruled out.

Betsy McGowen will join The CW as Senior Vice President and General Manager, Kids' WB! on The CW. McGowen, a senior executive at Kids' WB! since its inception in 1995, will oversee all series development, current programming and scheduling, as well as brand, image and marketing for Kids' WB! on The CW.

McGowen has served as Senior Vice President and General Manager, Kids' WB! since May 2004, overseeing all programming and marketing aspects for the children's block. She also previously served as Senior Vice President, Kids' WB! Marketing, where she helped shape the network's brand image and on-air campaigns.

Prior to joining The WB, McGowen worked as a freelance writer/producer/editor for many clients, including Fox and the Disney Channel. From 1992-93, she was a staff promo writer/producer for the Fox Kids Network. Prior to Fox Kids, McGowen was an offline/online videotape editor at NBC and Fox.

Once launched, Kids' WB! on The CW will air Saturday mornings from 7:00am - 12:00pm.

So... It's still just a 5-hour block on Saturdays. Confused With this merger taking place, you would think they'd try to take advantage of the block. It just seems to me like The WB is getting a new name and recycled UPN acquisitions. The outer shell may be saying that this is a merger, but the core doesn't seem to be showing it.

That's a mouthful. Confused

I wasn't expecting anything else besides the "name change". Afterschool cartoons are dead to broadcast networks.

At least she's got good experience in marketing kid's shows.

Rah, rah, Media Week!
Quote:
The new Kids WB! five-hour, Saturday morning block airing on CW this fall will include three new series from Warner Bros. Animation and a new group of programs that comply with the government’s children’s education initiative.

Gone will be longtime Kids WB! staples Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, both which have been falling steadily in the ratings.

The three new series will be Legion of Super Heroes, based on the DC Comics characters, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get a Clue!, and Tom and Jerry Tales. The block will kick off at 7 a.m. with a “Pillow Head” hour made up of educational programming. Kids WB! will announce at a later date shows that appear in that hour. The network has tapped a kids programming media advisor to help select programs that meet the federal requirements. Kids WB! will also offer the TV premiere of Monster Allergy, a half-hour show based on the comic book series and produced by Rainbow S.r.l., but it will not be part of the Pillow Head hour.

Betsy McGowen, senior vp and general manager of Kids WB! on CW, the same position she held when the block aired on the WB, said the decision to keep the Kids WB! name after the network ceases to exist was made after surveys showed that the name scored high in recognition among kids 6-11. “With CBS changing to DIC-produced kids programming and NBC dropping Discovery on Saturday mornings, we felt it would be best to keep the name consistent,” said McGowen.
.
.
.
On the new fall schedule, the Pillow Head hour will air from 7-8 a.m., followed by Tom and Jerry Tales at 8, Monster Allergy at 8:30 a.m., returning shows Xiaolin Showdown at 9 and Loonatics Unleashed at 9:30, Shaggy & Scooby-Doo at 10, returning Johnny Test at 10:30, Legion of Super Heroes at 11, and returning The Batman at 11:30.

You can find some links to proposed concept artwork through here, but not the final designs.
