You're talking animation here. it's either do it and edit it out later or don't do it at all. not really much else can be done. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

Just reminding you all, this isn't about trivia. You have any questions about the process, tools, skills, schools, lil tiny erasers, ok, and a bit of trivia... just ask it here. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

This isn't news, but I have a question about animation.
Why is it that the original MSG (and pretty much all of the animation from the 60's and 70's) was drawn so horribly compared to newer animation? I mean it's not like they learned to draw better over the past 30 years.
Actually they have, well... sorta. Mostly though the technology got better and styles have changes. Since its all scaned intot he computer now as oposed to being photographed they can now clean up lines easier and paint with more colors and accuracy (though some will say that this takes the humanity out of the art) this all leads to the ability to have more detail in the work with little to no loss in quality. With television animation this is seen the most As I also said its the sylistic trends of today. With the advances in tehnology we demand that the detail be upped to meat it. While this can produce desastrerous results at first, it is needed to gadge the currect level of quality needed for awesomeness (that is an industry term). The late 80's to early 90's saw the emergance of detail is a big thing in television animation and shows deleviered often int he quality of movement and fluidity. Then Batman came along with its simpler style and grace and blew its opponents away and now we are on the tend of anime and nary cartoon on saturday morning is american. I hope that answered your question. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

How much Judging does an Animatied Series have to go through before being shown on Network Television? And how do soccer moms fit in to it? _________________ I shake like a toothache,

That's not really my dept. It all depends on the network, some have strict restrictive overabundant guidelines to follow, others-- like cartoon network have fairly lenient and open minded rules of what can and can't be shown. Fox Kids had I believe 7 simple rules for their shows to follow. I believe they were No nudity, no drugs, no booze, no child endangerment (thats why Robin was college student aged), no facial hitting, no breaking glass, and there is one or two that I missed. but I think you get the idea. Oh yeah, gotta stay away from religion too.
Actually Soccer Moms only fit in two places. First: They are the bane of all animators, game makers, and comic book creators. And so those three try to keep them in mind as the process goes along just a little bit so that they can use certain defenses against them when they come up again in the second place they fit in. The second place is: policing the media they allow their kids to read, watch, play with AFTER it is already bought for them. They then try and raise a stink about whatever game strikes against their fancy without fiving it any fort of chance for an explanation. Basicly when all is said and done they are annoying and very little more.
Any more questions? _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

So the animators just know how to draw better than they did 30 years ago? I don't understand, I mean, my mom was a good artist when she was in high school in the 70's, and these professional artists couldn't draw any better than MSG?

as I said, sorta. With computers being such a big part of animation now alot more is now able to go into every cel while taking the same ammount of time it used to. Also the budgets for series have ballooned to prorpotions unheard ever before which allows for even more details. Most animation of the 70's and 80's were mass produced with little to no care into how they were made as long as they were made whereas starting in the 90's animation has really been stepped up and now is mass produced with loving care. Not only that but the viewers aka you and umm... us.... demand more and demand better.
So basicly in the end the computer upped the ante of what could be done for what and the consumer demanded more and so the stdios hire BETTER ANIMATORS. Remember a good artist does not make a good animator.
That clear it up at all? _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

The older shows like Gundam and Lupin suffer from the conditions the original film masters were treated to. The better care that is taken of the original film, the better subsequent prints will look. And Gundam was restored before the English dub was produced. The Animeigo "Macross" release (with restored video) I have looks a lot better than ADV's "Robotech" release.

hehehe, damn skippy.
yes, as nobu also said, the older shows are prone to degeneration and disintegration over time which also lowers teh quality of the fotoage when it is viewed. It's seen with any sort of filmed media. Also they are prone to generation loss which is basicly what happens when you make a copy of a copy of a copy-- details are lost; generally forever. The modern digitally inked & Painted cels however will last as long as they need to (as long as the HD doesnt crash or whatever) and can reproduced endless ammount of time with little to no generational loss.
In other words: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm in 15 years will look dingy, dirty, and downright ancient when compared to how Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker will in 30 years. All movies will one day be converted to digital so they will never be lost due to neglagence or age or fire or anything like that. Magnets will be feared in the future. EMP Rifles are the weapons of tommarow when we all have hard drives installed in each ass cheak and video cards in our pci slots so smoot out reality and bump up the viewable polygons. _________________ "Veni.
