Unlike many viewers, I am having a great time watching Knights of the Zodiac. It has more to do with the nostalgia of the 80s than anything, I guess. I never had an opportunity to watch it when it first came out, so I have a question for those in the know.
Is the character of Shun/Andromeda a girl?
I know the show now portrays the character as a guy, but there are several things to make me suspect it was conceived in Japan as a female.
Shun's clothing. The white suspenders in the 80s were more popular with girls. It is hard to tell from her design (80s values meant most body types were rather androgynous) but you can kind of say she has breasts. Even the princess has nothing in comparison with the guys.
Shun's character. She cries. Alot. As a guy the character is a wuss. As a girl it is perfectly acceptable. Why else were the kids so upset at Shun's being sent to Devil Island? And considering the time period, the only Knight the writers could put in a cabin with a teenage princess would have to be another girl. The butler doesn't count as he is too old to worry about.
Andromeda's armor. It's pink for goodness sakes! And it does have breasts. You can clearly see the lines designating the breastplate. The other Knights have rectangular muscle lines. Andromeda has round. And Andromeda is the only female constellation. I think.
This would not be the first time sexes were changed, I guess for "family values." Girls are not supposed to fight, unless they are super feminine the rest of the time and can be saved by the men while in battle (a la Voltron). Shun is much to capable to be a girl of the 80s.
I could be wrong about all this. I don't watch Knights of the Zodiac, so I wouldn't know _________________ The only truth that realy exists is the truth within the mind of the individual and the way the individual sees the world...

Ya, hate to say it but the Knights of the Zodiac is one of the worst american productions of a good anime ever, and not many here are avid fans. _________________ Bang.

Not really. Nostalgia refers to memories of older franchises that we remembered and enjoyed when we were younger. Transformers, G.I. Joe, He-Man... Those all count as nostalgia. Saint Seiya isn't really memorable.

I can assure you without a shadow of a doubt that from watching the uncut release of "Saint Seiya" from ADV that Andromeda Shun is indeed a man. No sex change whatsoever. He falls under the more effeminate kind of bishounen characters like Quatre Raberba Winner in "New Mobile Report Gundam Wing" where they're all about emotion and heart, that and he's associated with the female Greek mythological figure Andromeda.
