I'd rather get the Toyota Matrix myself. It runs from 15 to 19 grand and is infinitly cooler than the civic ever could be.

I've got a friend who owns a Matrix. She hates it.

You won't be racing with the Civic Hybrid. Only 95 horsepower. Take that into consideration.

I meant the Civic Hybrid. Typo. Just saying that the LX is faster. But if you don't care, it's all in the price specs, because besides that, the two aren't much different as far as luxury and handling.

Estimated 2003 Monthly Earnings (before tax) $1,600
Estimated 2003 Fiscal Earnings: $24,000
Estimated 2003 Federal Tax withheld: $2,200
Estimated Taxable Income: $21,800
Hybrid Car Tax Deduction: $2,000
Estimated Taxable Income after Deduction: $19,800

Regularly Occurring Expenses:
$120/month Car Insurance
$150/month Rent (Greedy parents...)

Misc. Expenses
~$250/month food (It's not a "spare tire", it's a cavernous expanse for large quantities of biomass)
~$200/month Miscellaneous Crap (love that crap!)

Estimated Down Payment Regardless of Car Choice: $5,000
36 Month financing @ 1.9% APR - No prepayment penalties

Estimated Financing amount:
Civic LX: $10,000
Civic Hybrid: $15,000

Current account balance: $11,000
Immediate future purchase: Dual 2GHz PowerMac (~$2,500)

...should I go for the Hybrid now that you all know my financial situation?

Estimated income after monthly expenses (using your figures): $880
Estimated monthly payment for Civic LX: ~$317 (12x= $3,804)
Estimated monthly payment for Civic Hybrid: ~$471 (12x= $5,652)

Estimated annual income tax (IRS 2002 table):
$21,800 taxable income: $2,974
$19,800 taxable income: $2,674

Whew.
You could just about buy the Mac with the annual payment savings from buying the LX.
The tech junkie in me says buy the Hybrid, but it's hard to justify with those figures. I could have it all wrong, though.
One other thing I hadn't considered: Resale value of the Hybrid after 3 years. It may not be as valuable (less popular) since the tech is so new to the marketplace.
This is why I stopped buying new cars years ago... Confused

Those numbers seem to make sense and match the calculations I've been doing.
The LX is looking better and better...

heh, I have an 89 honda civic, got it for 2k. biggest problem I've had with it is the timing belt broke and i had to get it replaced for about 200$ (at the same time getting all my other belts replaced and full tune up for that same 200) my car has been great, so civics are obviously proven, how proven is the hybrid?

Ditto for my nephew's '87 Prelude. It smokes, but it starts everytime (160,000+ miles and counting). The only problem he's ever had was the timing belt, too.
The gas engine I wouldn't be too worried about, it's that electric motor drivetrain. It's probably borrowed from the now-defunct Impact, but there hasn't been enough data to accurately predict how it would hold up long-term...this stuff's still in its infancy.

Unless you want to use your life savings to pay more money down on the Hybrid and lower the payments. Twisted Evil
