Just saw the film about an hour ago. Wasn't as bad as I had expected it to be. Still not as good as the books, of course. But the problem with the transition from book to film was that most of the humor in the books was in the narrative, not the conversations. Anyone else read the books/watch the movie?

I haven't done either but the movie looks okay. I don't know if I would go see it though. _________________ "Charles Xaiver did more for mutants than you could ever know. My only regret is that he had to die for our dream to live." -Magneto, X Men3:The Last Stand

Again, a lot of the humor was in the narrative originally, but the producers did make some big screw-ups. The dolphin exodus is entirely unnecessary (and should never warrent 5 minutes of film) when they don't plan on making films of any of the other books. The romance with Trillian was severely played up (but that's fine if you don't plan on making any other movies), and so forth. A lot of changes ranging from inconsequencial to "they can't make the next one now."
Oh well; the morons in the theater seemed to like it. _________________ This space left intentionally blank.

... I thought you were more observant than that. Anyone truly familiar with the whole HHGG story (not confined to the books) would realize that this is a movie that almost follows and almost contradicts the other pieces. As such, it was a bit weak, but still something that DNA might be proud of. The fact that they didn't leave much room for sequels doesn't bother me. It's a movie, and it's taken them how many years to get it done? Do you honestly expect it would happen again? Especially since the creator is now gone. All in all, there were some things that bothered me, mostly the characters themselves. But Hitchhiker's Guide was never, ever about the plot. Stop whining about the plot.
For the characters, most of them were excellent, with one glaring exception. Zaphod was portrayed as far more of an airhead than in the other works. Yes, a Galactic President needs to be flamboyant, but you can't be a total ditz, and Zaphod definitely wasn't in the other works.
Arthur and Trillian were pretty stock, which makes sense. Yes, there's a love story, and that's just fine. It's what makes the movie come to a satisfying end, which is more than you can say for really any of the books.
Marvin was perfect. Sure, the physical representation was different, but the actual character was spot-on. My favorite character all the way through, and carried over in a most refreshingly depressed manner. _________________ Krogoth uses Berserk.
