Once a hill existed among a peculiar type of shrubbery.

These plants grew leaves that were both lucid and a bright mint green. When the moonlight splashed down upon the plants, the area would be basked in a brilliant lime glow.

Once every month, on days that varied and followed no pattern, a fox would slowly ascend to the peak. The fox recited his poem as his fellow animals gathered.

His prey the rabbit out numbered his fellow foxes. His former competitors/pursuers the wild hounds made no agressive act towards him.

The animals stood as a brotherhood until the fox concluded his talk. Then the fox stood alone until every other had skulked off into the night.

The words remained the same.

"A broken heart
Will never mend.
The pain inside
Can only grow dim.
One forgets
But now and then...
It gives a pang
A slight tinge.
Haunts you like lost words
To a forgotten hymn.
I'm afraid the music won't stop
The world shall continue to spin.
Life will go on.
You won't forget them.
Running is not an option sometimes
All left to do is think while you sit.
What good is a lesson
If you don't recall it?"

One night the fox did not show up.

'Has he died?' Someone asked. But entering the realm of death implies one has used all of their time. And not one among them could say that was so. They refused to.

'Has he gone somewhere else to spread his message?' Asked another. This too was denied. Any message that rings true will spread itself. It will survive translation, it will survive being forgotten. Lost ideas surface in dreams as fragments (that put themselves together while convincing he who slept that reconstructing the idea is something done without influence, out of pure ingenuity). The fox needed not to move at all.

'Why come to us if only to leave?' Demanded many elders, as well as many of age.

Ducks are not a creature of this place, but many would travel miles if only to hear the recital once. A duckling stepped forward.

None had seen it before.

'This was,' confessed the duckling, its first time.

'Then what could make you think you have a solution to our question?' smirked a wolf.

The duckling did not back down. Calmly, and methodically it spoke.

'I have heard many tales from many different storytellers.
I have heard talk of what was said here.
I did not hear what was said first hand.
For the weaver of the tapestry has cut the last thread and tied it close.
It was an eventuality.
Everything that begins, ends.
Everything that ends, begins.
Everything that never happened, could have.
Everything that should happen, will happen.'

The duckling stood wore a grin as all others left. The especially perceptive noticed that the duckling's face looked to be fixed in a smile that by all rights should've had teeth. It was an expression that displayed too much wisdom for it to be comfortable.

The meetings never happened after that night. All left, and never acknowledged where they'd been. Those who had heard would not share the lesson. They did not have to.

I saw it in my slumber.

I recounted it to you.

I did. But you're not going to wow me with a simple prologue, usually.

pro·logue also pro·log ( P ) Pronunciation Key (prlôg, -lg)
n.
An introduction or preface, especially a poem recited to introduce a play.
An introduction or introductory chapter, as to a novel.
An introductory act, event, or period.

The story has a set beginning, a rising action, and an end. If you want to say it sucks, tell me it sucks.

I didn't read it. I got distracted by the avatars. Beside, yes, it is boring.

No, it doesn't suck. It's actually quite good. But writing a good first chapter isn't very hard. It's getting to the middle where you really get bogged down, and pull a few spectacular tricks out of your hat.
