An open letter to the Infolink Community,

As some of you guys may know, I've recently thrown my hat into the Website Design field, working on one company's website while assisting in a second this past summer. Both have had a pre-existing web presence, which meant I barely had to deal with the concept of finding a hosting service as it was already there for use.

I've taken off of work this semester to focus on my studies, while using my spare time to construct a personal website, which I plan to use in my portfolio when re-entering the workforce this winter. I'd like to break away from using free hosting services and actually invest in my own domain name and server space, but I know little about these topics and want to avoid making a bad choice. Adding to this, I'm in negotiations to take care of all website-related services for a small catering business in the area that has no pre-existing web presence, so it would help to have some knowledge in these areas to instill confidence in what could be a possible contract.

So what am I asking? I'd like to know if anyone could help point me towards a good, reliable, and affordable hosting service, either for personal use or for small business activities. I'd like to keep monthly fees below $10.00, so I'm prepared to expect services under the "getting what I paid for" moniker. Even with that limitation however, there appears to be a plethora of possibilities out there, and finding the 'diamond in the rough' has proven difficult. Also, if anyone can lead me to some informative websites about how the whole process works (servers, domain names, etc.), that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks for your assistance,

JJc14
