Just a thought: I find it friggin' AMAZING that an old English Catholic guy like J.R.R. Tolkien could write such wonderfully cool shit. It's like going to your local nursing home and visiting a patient, only to find out they have the entire NGE collection under their bed, and a GameCube hooked up to their TV.

it was in fact an allegory and very christian book. the references and parallels to the christian faith were flooded throughout. Also it was kinda a world war two allegory...

Tolkein, of course, denied any such allegories in his work. This article from Slate makes a nice little argument. Smile

you can take anything and compaire it to anything else and find enough simularities (if you look hard enough) to make those kind of claims with anything.

Then we're in complete agreement (how often does that happen?). Very Happy
Anything beyond the original creator's claims is interpretive, clouded by the perceptions of the reader/viewer/critic, etc.

exactly! I've always been pissed off when people read into an artists (author's are included) work and claim that is what they meant. bullshit! if that's what they meant, they would have said so in the first place! what right does somebody have to tell the artist/author that "this is what you meant"? it happens all the time, people write in to them telling them what they saw in their works and how they made the connections. Over analyzation! that's what our society has become about. I'd make this post have more continuity if it weren't for the intense pain of my neck.

So true, so true. Being in Debate Club, I know for a FACT you can relate anything to anything else. Quite fun, really.

Nono, that actually DID make sense and DID have a logical connection. I mean, the puppy, that was like the industry. And the little boy, well he was like the people, looking for the puppy.
