2. STAR WARS: EPISODE II - ATTACK OF THE CLONES, $310 million.
3. HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS, $240 million.
4. SIGNS, $227 million.

Personally I think it's funny how LotR is #7 considering it's what, only 2 weeks old? Let's see how high it climbs in another 4.

also..... According to Greg's Previews, the new title for THE FAST & THE FURIOUS 2 is 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS.

Mississippi University for Women has announced that they have rescinded their offer for MTV to use a campus building to interview women for their developing reality series SEX IN THE ITTY BITTY CITY. According to MUW president Claudia Lambert, the decision was made when the school learned of the tentative title for the show; it wasn't mentioned by producers early on. The show, which is currently casting, will focus on women that are husband-hunting. The show will bow in late April.

Royce Applegate, most well known for his role as Chief Manilow Crocker on SEAQUEST DSV, was found in his Hollywood Hills Mansion, dead after a fire in his home. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Applegate also appeared in THE ROOKIE and recently completed two other films: GODS AND GENERALS and TALKING IN YOUR SLEEP.

A sequel to hit film Seven is to be made - with original star Morgan Freeman but minus hunk Brad Pitt. The grisly serial killer movie wowed audiences in the 1995 who watched as Pitt's character Detective David Mills was left bereft after his wife and unborn baby became the last victims of Kevin Spacey's eerie psycho. Instead the action will center on Freeman's character William Somerset, who partnered Pitt in the first film, as he comes up against another serial killer - who has psychic abilities. An insider says, "The gruesome climax had previously ruled out a sequel. But bosses think they have the right script now. Brad's character will be mentioned, but he will not appear. He will be in a mental hospital."

The Walt Disney Co. will undertake a broad reorganization of its animation operations, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, January 3, 2003.

Currently, the company's animation businesses have been grouped together under the management of Thomas Schumacher. That division will now be split and the feature animation division will be folded into Disney's live-action feature operations, while the television animation studios will be merged with the Disney Channel.

Disney says that the reorganization is part of a drive to increase the production of cartoon series, and likens it to an earlier reorganization that merged its television production studios and the ABC broadcast network. In both cases, the intent is to create efficiencies while also giving the network the greater ability to create and control "franchise" series that can be exploited in such secondary markets as home video and consumer products.

As long as they make more series with the cleverness found in Kim Possible, this is good. If they start making spin offs and Proud Family-like shows, this is bad. Very bad.

TV Guide had the interview:

Since the Sci Fi Channel announced that the 11 new episodes of Farscape that begin airing Friday (at 8 pm/ET) will be the cult hit's last, the critics have spoken, the producers have spoken, and Lord knows, the fans have spoken. (Although Jim Henson Co. is developing a Farscape feature and anime project at starburst speed, and looking into syndication options, alienated viewers are nonetheless calling for a boycott of the cable network that shot down their favorite space opera.) In fact, just about the only entity that hasn't put in its two-cents' worth is Sci Fi... until now, that is. "We really tried to take the high road," says the cabler's president, Bonnie Hammer. "Instead of going out there and in any way belittling our partners, we kind of remained quiet." However, at last she is ready to break her silence and, in an exclusive interview with TV Guide Online, explain why the intergalactic castaways' star trek had to come to an end. — Ben Katner

TV Guide Online: So, what gives? Why would you want to cancel such a rad show?
Bonnie Hammer: We never wanted to cancel it. What we were trying to do was do 13 more episodes, not 22. The ratings had softened, and it was getting increasingly expensive to produce. We just couldn't make the financial deal. But we never wanted it to end when it ended. We had all intentions of doing 13 more episodes [beyond these 11] — we wanted to keep it in '03 and end it in '03. But financially, it was just too difficult to do.

TVGO: In that case, why not at least do a proper wrap-up, a TV movie or something?
Hammer: We looked at all the options. But with the speed in which it would have had to be done — because the set had to be broken down and the cast had to come back [from Australia, where shooting took place] and the scripts weren't written — [the cost] would have been enormous. [It would] have been almost as if we were doing [the upcoming epic miniseries] Children of Dune — and with less potential upside. We love the series... and would have liked nothing more than for it to have had a little bit more of a broad appeal. If all of those incredible fans who wrote in and sent notes and flowers and [whatnot] had actually watched it every week, we would have been able to do the 22.

TVGO: You mean to tell me that Farscape doesn't have the numbers to merit a fourth season, but Stargate SG-1, which you just renewed, is attracting a big enough audience to deserve a seventh?
Hammer:Yes. Take a look at our numbers on Monday nights just for the Stargate repeats. It's crazy! Before we ended the season on Stargate, we were getting a very high 1 [rating] and peaked at, I think, a 2 or a 2.1. That was for new, original episodes. [Now] our average for Stargate repeats has been unbelievable — 1.7 and 1.8 [ratings]. When Farscape was repeating, we were lucky if we got a .8. So there's a huge difference.

TVGO: But Farscape is so cool. How can that be?!
Hammer: Even though Stargate is sci fi, it's very broad sci fi. It's not serialized. Every episode, you can come to it whether you've watched the one before [or not]. They are self-contained. My husband is kind of an absentee watcher, and he would tune in every fifth or sixth episode and have absolutely no issues [with following the plots]. Farscape, on the other hand, got very, very serialized. It got very "in."

TVGO: And that's a bad thing... ?
Hammer: They had brilliant and sophisticated writing, but it was so narrow that it basically was an invitation to not tune in if you weren't totally familiar with the show. It was brilliant when you got it, and some of the characterizations were truly amazing, but it took a little too much work.

According to ESPN, Fox football commentator and former defensive player Howie Long (BROKEN ARROW) is supposedly up for the role of Frank Castle, aka The Punisher in an upcoming adaption of Marvel Comics' THE PUNISHER. Because you know ESPN, they are the hard hitting comic book superhero movie news source. Razz

E! Online's Anderson Jones had the casting rumor:

Ashton's Secret Identity: I don't want to start any blasphemous rumors--okay, I do just a little bit, yeah, I do--but you can learn a lot watching MTV. Like maybe who will play Clark Kent next on the big screen. My office TV has been tuned to the music network all week--mostly to catch my friend Dan Renzi on the various Real World/Road Rules challenges that are in constant rotation. In between, I caught a Diary episode starring our beloved A.K. Well, the camera's unblinking eye caught Kutcher's automated schedule on his home PC. He was checking his plans for the day, but on another date, I caught this note: "Meeting at Universal, Superman, role of." It's a long shot in my mind--too lanky, but Spandex suits can do a lot these days.

And Coming Soon had these rumors about the title:

The next sets that Warner Brothers is building are for Superman. It will not be a Superman vs. Batman movie. They are going to give each movie a name like with the Batman series. The current name for this first one is Superman: The Flight. They have yet to cast the title character yet though, and are planning to go with an unknown actor again.

A friend of mine works at the BBC and recntly was present at a Brett Ratner interview where he said that although an actor was being sought for the role of Clark Kent/ Superman, all the flying scenes would be done using a digital stunt double who would be filmed in various "super" poses situations and then have a digital "Superman" skin placed over him in the movie. A stuntman-bit player called Jackie Anderson is the guy Ratner named. Don't know how true/false this is. Ratner could be yanking chains.

IGN Filmforce had the details:

There's a rumor making the rounds online today that former NFL star-turned-sports commentator/actor Howie Long (Broken Arrow, 3000 Miles to Graceland) is up for the title role in Artisan Entertainment's revamp of The Punisher. The report, which was posted at both Dark Horizons and Superhero Hype, says that commentators at ESPN claimed on-air that Long was in the running for the part. IGN FilmForce checked with their infallible source close to the production of The Punisher who advised us in no certain terms that "Howie Long is not the Punisher."

Our trusty insider advised us that the role of Frank Castle (a.k.a. The Punisher) HAS been cast and that an announcement is forthcoming. The actor who has been selected is "not a huge star, but known, very respected, and very good for the role." This thesp should bring a greater dimension and humanity to the character than, say, Dolph Lundgren.

The Punisher will begin filming later this year with Gale Anne Hurd producing and Jonathan Hensleigh writing and directing it.

Exactly what I hoped was going to happen. Like Spawn, a lesser known comic book hero is better cast as a lesser know actor.
