There already is one out, but it wasn't made by Disney, though. It was made as an educational animated video for the classrooms of our youth years ago.

What? You mean Roy Disney, Jr., the man responsible for cutting up classic Disney films and animated shorts over the past 5 or so years? Me no think so!

Post subject: Spike & Mike's DVD & book deal :D
Reply with quote
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Spike & Mike's is set to become an overnight sensation -- after a mere 25 years of successfully uniting independent animators with their audience.

A new book and long-term DVD deal with Shout! Factory Records are the latest projects to emerge from the influential traveling festivals created by Craig "Spike" Decker and the late Mike Gribble. It also acquired new shorts for this year's festival.

Shout Factory's deal is for a series of Spike & Mike's-branded DVDs during the next five years. "Full Frontal" and "Unprotected," the first two releases, each contain 30 animated shorts previously shown in Spike & Mike's Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation and feature work by Bill Plympton, Craig MacCracken and the Mondo Mini Shows creators, among others.

Garson Foos, president and general manager of Shout Factory, said at least five of the DVDs will showcase shorts from upcoming Spike & Mike's festivals.

"We love the whole spirit of Spike & Mike's and the independent, irreverent nature of it," Foos said. "He has a real guerrilla approach, and he's such a devoted cottage industry. It's a very strong brand."

Foos said that the DVDs will be promoted at all Spike & Mike's festival dates nationwide, supplemented by e-mail blasts, postcards and posters sent to targeted fans and retailers. Additional outreach will target colleges and morning radio personalities, combined with a three-week television ad campaign.

"We think Spike has the opportunity to blossom and reach a broader audience," Foos said.

Harry N. Abrams Inc. is the publisher of "Outlaw Animation: Cutting-Edge Cartoons from the Spike & Mike Festivals." The book by animation historian Jerry Beck, with an introduction by Todd McFarlane, documents Spike & Mike's ability to recognize and nurture talent.

Beck notes that the many well-known names who debuted at one of the Spike & Mike's festivals include Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Nick Park and Peter Lord of Aardman Animation, John Lasseter, Craig McCracken, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton and Mike Judge.

Pixar's Pete Docter, who directed "Monsters, Inc.," said the book was an excellent compendium of information about the "awesome films" that Spike & Mike brought to the public's attention. "I had always assumed that many of the artists who created these films were strange, cannibalistic, Satan-worshipping mole people, so it's comforting to read that this is not true," Docter added. "At least in most cases."

Decker has nearly finalized the next Spike & Mike's Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation, which will premiere in Los Angeles on Sept. 19. He said it will include "Here Comes Dr. Tran" by Breehn Burns, which comes "complete with 3-D glasses and is one of the funniest films I've ever seen in my life." Another short will be Tandem Film's "How to Cope With Death" by Ignacio Ferrerras, which Decker thinks "is a contender if they enter it for the Academy Awards."

He also confirmed that Spike & Mike's has purchased the series pilot "Sickcom," a comedy about a serial killer's family life that was written and directed by Robert Steven Rhine.

The timing for all this couldn't be better. In a completely unrelated development, MTV Networks' Spike TV just announced that it will showcase the best of Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation in six half-hour episodes.

Walt Disney Television International has acquired broadcast rights to Mainframe Entertainment Inc.'s animated Halloween special Scary Godmother Halloween Spooktakular (misspelling intended) for its channels in Asia, Latin America, Italy and Germany.

Based on the popular comics and children's books by award-winning artist and writer Jill Thompson, Scary Godmother is a whimsical CG animated story that follows the first trick-or-treating adventure of young Hannah Marie, who is being babysat by her meaner cousin one dark Halloween night. Unhappy to be saddled with Hannah, her cousin cooks up a scheme to frighten her, which backfires when Hannah gets help from her Scary Godmother and her quirky monster friends.

Mary Bredin, director of acquisitions and programming and part of the worldwide programming strategy of Disney/ABC Cable Networks Group said, "Mainframe's Scary Godmother has the right combination of spooky and sweet, with an abundance of personality. This charming special will fit right in with the high-quality, unique programming we take pride in offering."

Scary Godmother Halloween Spooktakular will premiere in Canada Halloween 2003 on YTV. A 'sneak peek' trailer for the special has been posted on Mainframe Entertainment's official website.

As part of Popeye's 75th anniversary celebration, King Features Syndicate is producing a brand-new 3-D Popeye animated holiday special, the company says. The as-yet untitled special is being co-written by actor/comedian Paul Reiser (of Mad About You) and Jim Hardison. Reiser will co-executive produce the project with Rick Karo and Frank Caruso

Fox will broadcast the special in prime time during the 2004 holiday season, and Artisan's Family Home Entertainment label will release an hour-long version to DVD and VHS during the same period. The DVD will feature never-before-seen Popeye footage as well as classic material.

Production work is being handled by Mainframe Entertainment, the animation studio behind Reboot and MTV's Spider-Man series. Mainframe has also secured distribution rights in certain international territories, including television rights in Canada and DVD/VHS rights in the UK and Australia.

Daily Variety adds (via Cartoon Research) that the story will focus on Popeye's search for his long-lost father, Poopdeck Pappy, and that no major updates or revisions to the character are planned. Billy West will voice Popeye.

Cartoon Network continued its run as the #1 ad-supported basic cable network in its prime time delivery of kids 6-11 and 2-11, the network says, as its delivery in each demographic rose by double digits.

The network's performance was helped by strong showings by both new and returning series. Teen Titans, Duck Dodgers, Kids Next Door and Samurai Jack were each the #1 basic cable shows in their time periods with kids 2-11, while SD Gundam Force has lifted Toonami's performance, as the new anime series raised ratings among kids 6-11 by 42% compared to the same time period last year.

Adult Swim also continued to do well, ranking #1 in its time slot for the delivery of men and adults 18-24.

According to Dark Horizons, Steven Spielberg is apparently considering directing a live-action movie based on Monkey Punch's Lupin the Third anime series. No details are given on the site. Gerald R. Molen, producer of Schindler's List (which was also directed by Speilberg), acquired the live-action film rights to Lupin the Third back in February.

Heh. Steven Speilberg is an anime fan. Who would've imagined that? Laughing

Oh, right.

Crap.

(How much longer, God?!! *insert sounds of wailing and gnashing of teeth*)

:edit: A few hours later...
Wait a minute! Disney/Saban might hold broadcast rights, but that shouldn't necessarily keep Nelvana from releasing DVD's a la Bandai and Escaflowne.

News story by dillpops:

Fans of Escaflowne in the UK, despite having six DVD's so far of uncut escaflowne containing the dub and a true subtitled versions are unfortunately still being kept in the dark about the next DVD which will complete the collection.

BUT NOT ANYMORE!

Yes, finally after almost half a year of waiting since DVD 6 was released, amazon.co.uk have announced release dates for the final two volumes of this fantastic series!

Both set for release on the 6th of October, these two volumes will finish the series that saw a full (although heavily cut) run on Fox Kids UK and released on DVD in the style that every anime should be given including:

-'Club Escaflowne' cast interviews
-textless opening and music videos
-trailers for other anime series
-proper subtitles and not just 'dub titles'
-unedited

It's not yet known what the extras will be on these final two volumes, fans are hoping for a glorius send of with the final DVD, cover below:

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0000CERT9.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

But it seems unlikely that they can expect anything more than the previous volumes, fortunately, the ownership of the full Escaflowne series will be enough to statisfy myself and most fans.

All we can hope for now is a DVD release of the movie sooner rather than later.

In other UK Escaflowne news, the manga is also now available to buy in translated format for fans of the show, even though the story my differ fans of the show will no doubt enjoy seeing the similar story and mecha desgins in beautiful detail.

Take a look at the tentative DVD cover for that Lion King 1½ movie that Disney announced over a year ago (courtesy of Animated Movies):

http://www.network54.com/Hide....4954119

And we all thought it was going to be a sequel to the first movie and a prequel to the second. Disney really had us fooled. Laughing

The Timon & Pumbaa Movie is a more fitting title for it.
