Not that South Dakota is bad, but all the ice gets old...

Unfortunately, I have to spend the next five days with The bono. It's better food than Chartwell's.

Well, I finally finished with my classes today, and turned in my final paper for my Film Theory class (I wrote it on Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai... nootch), and I performed my final scene for my Acting class yesterday (a snippet from the Neil Simon play Prisoner of Second Avenue)...

Finals Week starts on Monday, and wouldn't you know it?, I only have one exam! It's for my Philosophy: Intro to Logic and Reasoning class, which was pretty fun (even if it was a real challenge most of the time to understand what the hell the prof. was talking about). I'm not really that worried about it...

So, basically that means that until I go home for Christmas/New Year's (I'll probably head home around the 19th or 20th, and get a couple extra weeks of work under my belt while I'm up here so I can afford Christmas presents), I'll finally have more time to spend in here and pollute the boards with my brain-droppings...

You have been warned!... Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

For my video production class, we did a music video for The Pixies - Where is My Mind. Made it with screen shots so most of the video wasn't smooth motion; most of it was screen shots of the action that changed on every beat. Took a TON of time to make, I worked on it during every free period I had, and so did the other members of my group. Ended up being the only project done on time, and the best project EVER.

Vid prod PWNS film study any day. ^_^

Ah, but do you understand Sergei Eisenstein's montage theory and how it relates to today's music video industry as well as the resulting quick-cut culture that the MTV generation has created in today's film? Or how about the Kuleshev Experiment? Cutting according to the rhythm of the music is considered rhythmic montage, but could you have created a music video without that many cuts? In fact, one could make a bold statement by making a video with no cuts, which while rare do exist. Of course, this would require a study in deep-focus and the works of such filmmakers as Jean Renior, who believed that the edit made unnecessary breaks in space and time and could result in a less-than-par performance on the part of the actors (which is why Alfred Hitchcock's film Rope made the bold decision to cut only four times through out the film). Then again, most people who study Hollywood films are much more likely to express the "Continuity Editing" style, first developed by D.W. Griffith, where the edits are "hidden", cuts made on action, etc.

...but then again, that's just from the top of my head...

BTW Green-Bird, what was the topic of your Matrix essay?

Myself, I did a close reading of a short segment from Seven Samurai, focusing on not only the editing techniques and Kurosawa's tendancy to be inspired by both the works of fellow Japanese filmmakers (such as Yasujiro Ozu) and by Western influences (his film Throne of Blood is based on Shakespeare's Macbeth, and Ran is based on King Lear). Plus the fact that he in turn influenced many Western filmmakers, such as Francis Ford Copolla, George Lucas, and the "Spaghetti Westerns" of Sergio Leone. All the while showing how Seven Samurai combines and effectively uses theories of montage, deep-focus, and even the effective close-up to create the desired psychological effects upon the audience (which, by the way, it helps to know a little about Freud, the Oedipus complex, the subconscious, Lacan's mirror-stage, as well as accept the theory that all objects within the frame of a shot are implied to have intention)...

...but once again, without the paper in front of me, I'm just spouting out stuff from my foggy "post-finals" memory...
