Yay! UK Toonami have rigths to Rave Master and One Piece!

Don't get too excited. We've witnessed those show's premieres here in the U.S. You'll likely be disappointed.

One Piece is a classic, long-anticipated anime, but 4Kids totally ruined it with their typical overuse of edits and bad dubbing. The show's 20-something-year-old stars sound like 8-year-olds. >_<

Rave Master, on the other hand, has a somewhat better dub and less edits, but it's still boring. It has poor quality animation, a cliché and inconsistent plot, and it falls flat on its face when it tries too hard to be random and/or funny.

Previously Unreleased Dragon Ball Z DVDs!
'Ultimate Uncut Special Editions'
November 24, 2004

FUNimation is planning to release the first 63 Dragon Ball Z episodes, complete and uncut, for the first time in the U.S. This new Dragon Ball Z DVD series will be titled the Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Uncut Special Editions.

Some of the material from these episodes was previously released in Ocean editions, which presented the material as it had been edited for broadcast. The first 63 episodes were edited down into 50 episodes, with many key segments, including major fight scenes (such as a key battle between Goku and Vegeta), heavily edited. FUNimation is re-recording the dubbed versions with voice actors consistent with the other FUNimation episodes; subtitled versions of each episode will, of course, also be included on the same discs. Both picture and sound will be of the highest quality, including 5:1 surround sound. Each disc will also include extras, including information about the history of Dragon Ball Z and the significance of these episodes. The discs will be packaged with new trade dress to reflect the nature of these special editions. The first two discs in the series will be released in April and June, 2005.

FUNimation is also giving a similar treatment to three Dragon Ball Z movies previously released by Pioneer in the late 1990s--The Dead Zone, The World's Strongest, and Tree of Might. The company will release the first in May, 2005, with at least one more to be released in 2005.

FUNimation will also continue releasing its own editions of the Dragon Ball Z movies in sequence. Movie #10 will be released on March 29th, #11 in August, and #12 and #13 to follow.

There. Now it's official.
Or rather, it might be official, since ICV2 doesn't cite any source for their info. Wink

The Manhattan location of Mercy College recently reported receiving an extremely generous grant from the former vice chairman of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company and former chairman of Walt Disney Animation, Mr. Roy E. Disney. Always keen to the interests and needs of up and coming animators, directors, producers, and screenwriters, Disney continually carries on the good name of groundbreaking animation with this charitable offer to aspiring individuals. Mercy College has noted that they are very grateful for the grant from Roy E. Disney, and intend to use the gift for a wide number of activities around the institution.

Mercy College of New York, widely known for its computer and digital artistry, received a donation of $110,000. The gift will go towards the assemblage and management of the Roy Disney Animation Studio within the institutions Manhattan campus. Once already a great place to learn and experience animation and art in academia, Mercy College will soon be outfitted with one of the most high profile and top-notch studios in addition to its already notable schoolwork. Representatives of the College have eagerly noted that this brand new animation studio will be a "professional-level animation studio outfitted with the newest technology" in order to assess, create, and supervise the latest animated creations this generation (and future generations) have to offer.

The Roy Disney Animation Studio will be built in order to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, focusing on getting students ready to animate within the feature film, television, world wide internet, as well as the video gaming industries, all of which are currently thriving dynamically. Mercy College has stated that "the program will emphasize a balance between the classical and digital skills needed in animation," by "balancing conceptual development, creative self-expression, practical skills, and complex technical preparation—the Animation program at the Roy Disney Studio will empower students to be creative, ethical, and technically proficient animators who can effectively and appropriately entertain, educate and inform." This Bachelor of Fine Arts degree as to be obtained through this classroom and private studio will consist of seventy-eight credits in the major with forty-two credits concerning liberal arts courses. Alongside other fantastic courses and areas of interest at Mercy College that focus on special effects, computer graphics, digital modeling, and sound for film and television, the Roy Disney Animation Studio will be a great fit for Mercy College.

Disney dissidents satisfied, won't challenge board

By The Associated Press

Stanley Gold and Roy Disney said in a letter to Disney board members that they have accomplished the goals set a year ago when they resigned from the board and called for the company to fire Eisner, who they blame for the company's lackluster performance since the late 1990s.

Gold and Roy Disney led a shareholder revolt that resulted in an unprecedented 45% vote against Eisner's re-election to the board last March.

In reaction to that vote, the board stripped Eisner of his board chairman responsibilities and split the roles of chairman and chief executive officer.

Earlier this year, the board also hired a search firm to replace Eisner, who said he would retire when his contract expires in 2006. The board has pledged to name a successor by June and Eisner has said he would not seek to remain on the board once he leaves.

Disney has also named several new independent board members and pledged to add another next year. This week, Disney said Fred H. Langhammer, chairman of global affairs for Estee Lauder Cos., would be added to the board next year. Ten of Disney's 12 directors are now independent.

The two dissidents said they assume the board "will continue to act in good faith to fulfill the promises it made to Disney stockholders over the course of the last nine months."

The two men expressed disappointment that the board had rejected recommendations for an independent board member from a group of state pension funds. They also said they were displeased that the board had rejected several shareholder proposals the two men had backed.

But they said that they were pleased with recent improvements in the company's performance. Disney's stock has risen in the past year as the company's earnings per share grew more than 70%. Disney also raised its dividend by 14% to 24 cents and shares have risen 15% since the beginning of the year.

"We are taking this Board at its word," the two men wrote. "We are hopeful that Disney shareholders will not be disappointed."

The Walt Disney Company and Pixar Animation Studios on Tuesday said they would postpone the theatrical release of their animated feature Cars to June 2006 from November 2005.

Officials from both companies said the move was aimed at profiting from potentially stronger movie attendance by kids on summer break, but analysts said it may help buy Pixar more time to find a new distributor for its films.

Cars, an animated road movie helmed by Toy Story and A Bug's Life director John Lasseter, is the seventh and final film produced by the successful Disney-Pixar partnership.

Pixar Chief Executive Steve Jobs said on Tuesday the schedule shift would also apply to films released after Cars, meaning they will be released in theaters over the summer and on home video at the holidays.

Last month, Jobs said the company hoped to replicate its success with Finding Nemo, a summer release that became the 12th highest grossing U.S. movie of all time.

Jobs' announcement in November that Pixar was considering the schedule change prompted Wall Street speculation that the company would postpone making a distribution deal planned for mid-2005.

Emeryville, California-based Pixar's distribution and production agreement with Disney is set to expire in 2005 with the delivery of Cars.

Pixar now pays Disney 10 percent to 15 percent of revenues from the films, plus a 50-percent cut of profits. Jobs and outgoing Disney CEO Michael Eisner have publicly clashed over terms for a new deal.

Jobs admitted then that he wanted to see how the "musical chairs" affecting the heads of several major studios would turn out before committing to a new partner.

Disney spokeswoman Heidi Trotta said on Tuesday that the two studios were not in talks over a new distribution pact.

"This is about moving a summer movie to summer," she said.

Analyst David Miller of Sanders Morris Harris said the shift shows Pixar needs more time to find a new partner.

"They're going to sugar-coat it and say, 'Well, this is going to play better in the summer,' but that's only a quarter of the story," Miller said.

The schedule shift also will mean that Pixar will have only the DVD release of The Incredibles on which to peg its financial performance in 2005.

Fulcrum Global Partners analyst Richard Greenfield called the move "not terribly surprising" but predicted it would pressure Pixar's stock price.

"We are surprised that Disney was interested in pushing out a very important part of its fiscal '06 earnings," Greenfield said.

Jetix books $5.8 million income

LONDON -- European kids entertainment group Jetix Europe on Wednesday posted net income of $5.8 million on revenues of $165.4 million for the year to the end of September, blaming a 12% drop in the value of the dollar against sterling and the euro for currency related losses totaling just under $1 million. Three-month figures were not available. Amsterdam-listed Jetix is majority-owned by the Walt Disney Company and as Europe's biggest kids brand has 14 local-language feeds broadcasting to 38 million homes across 58 countries. Jetix hopes to secure distribution in Portugal this year "subject to price," and forecast that it would be in a further 4 million homes by the end of the next fiscal year. Citing the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands as Jetix Europe's strongest markets, chief executive Paul Taylor conceded that some markets, including Germany, continue to be slow. "There are key issues about the rate of growth of (German pay TV platform) Premier, that's something we are looking at in terms of performance," he said in an interview.

DreamWorks Animation Reports Third Quarter Financial Results- revises future feature release schedule (most likely in response to yesterday's Pixar news - N. Wink )

GLENDALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 2004--DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (NYSE:DWA), which completed its initial public offering ("IPO") on October 27, 2004, today announced financial results for its fiscal third quarter ended September 30, 2004.

For the third quarter 2004, revenue totaled $241.3 million, costs of revenue were $196.3 million, and net income totaled $20.3 million ($13.7 million after pro forma taxes or $0.18 per diluted share). These results compare favorably to the same period last year, when the company recorded revenue of $47.8 million, costs of revenue of $73.0 million, and a net loss of $35.9 million, or $0.47 net loss per diluted share.

For the nine months ended September 30, 2004, revenue totaled $582.5 million, costs of revenue were $394.5 million, and net income was $141.0 million ($90.7 million after pro forma taxes or $1.18 per diluted share). The nine-month period for 2004 also compared favorably to the prior year, when the company recorded revenue of $166.4 million, costs of revenue of $267.7 million and a net loss of $150.6 million, or $1.97 net loss per diluted share. Third quarter and nine-month period results do not include the impact of the company's distribution agreement with DreamWorks Studios, which was entered into on October 7, 2004.

"Our results for the third quarter reflect the strong domestic and international theatrical performance of Shrek 2, as well as continuing revenue generated by our growing library of films," said DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. "We are also thrilled with the results of our films in the fourth quarter, including the recent box office success of Shark Tale, which has earned over $300 million on a worldwide basis and is still being released in several international territories. In addition, initial Shrek 2 video sales have set an all-time record, selling over 30 million units worldwide in just over four weeks. We are well positioned in the CG animation market with a distinctive and powerful brand, a world-class, highly experienced creative team, and the scale and resources necessary to produce two high-quality CG films per year."

The company also announced that it has decided to move its release of Shrek 3 from November 2006 to May 2007.

"We believe there are more than a half a dozen strong release windows available annually for our films," commented Jeffrey Katzenberg. "We look at each film very specifically to determine which of these release windows will best maximize its value in the marketplace based on a number of factors, including its story, the competitive landscape and the overall market potential. The sheer magnitude of the Shrek franchise has led us to conclude that a May release date -- with a DVD release around the holiday season -- will enable us to best maximize performance and increase profitability, thereby generating enhanced asset value and better returns for our shareholders."

Based on this change, DreamWorks Animation's new anticipated release schedule is as follows:

-- Madagascar (release on May 27th 2005)

-- Wallace & Gromit: Tale of the Were Rabbit (release on October 7th 2005)

-- Over the Hedge (release on May 19th 2006)

-- Flushed Away (release in fall 2006)

-- Shrek 3 (release in May 2007)

Why do I get the feeling that they bought FUNi for DBZ? There has to be a cheaper way to do that.

Spaceballs: The Animated Series
posted by joshualane at Animated Bliss - January 20 2005 - 11:35pm

LOS ANGELES and BERLIN, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BFC Berliner Film Companie has partnered with Brooksfilms and MGM Domestic Television Distribution, a unit of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (NYSE: MGM), to create an animated television series based on the classic Mel Brooks comedy "Spaceballs."

"We are thrilled to be working with a comic genius like Mel Brooks on what we're sure will be the highly successful translation of his classic film comedy to the medium of animation for TV," said Rainer Soehnlein, chief executive officer of BFC Berliner Film Companie Group. "We look forward to our collaboration with him and with MGM, and to bringing 'Spaceballs' to a new audience."

Under the agreement, BFC and MGM will produce an hour-long pilot and 13 half-hour episodes. Additionally, MGM will distribute the program in the U.S., Canada and internationally with the exception of Germany.

Brooks and Thomas Meehan, who together co-wrote the original screenplay, will write the pilot and supervise writing on the rest of the series. Brooks and Soehnlein will serve as executive producers and Brooks will provide the voice of two main characters, President Scroob and Yogurt.

"Primetime animation has become a powerful staple and with the unmatched comedic talents of Mel Brooks and BFC's expertise, you've got quite a winning combination," said Jim Packer, MGM's executive vice president of television distribution, North America. "To this day, 'Spaceballs' is incredibly successful on television and in video, and with the abundance of Sci-fi films that have come out in the past decade, there's no shortage of material for Mel."

"Spaceballs" was released theatrically in 1987. The film's storyline focuses on Planet Spaceball's President Scroob, who sends Lord Dark Helmet to steal Planet Druidia's abundant supply of air to replenish that of his own planet. Only the hero, Lone Star, can stop the evil plan.
