Okay, let me start by saying this is freaking awesome! And not just because it means more anime on TV. I don't care about the shows. It's the packaging! I want to see if Tom alludes to thinks like Midnight Run or The Intruder. I want to see if they go back to creating those amazing promos and intros. That's where the nostalgia is for all of us.
That also got me thinking....why now?
Why would they resurrect this programming block so many years later, and why move it's time slot to 12am? The answer is pretty obvious. We all old now.
Adult Swim is essentially re-branding their nearly-defunct anime blocks as a "New" Toonami. From a marketing standpoint, it makes great sense. First, they're looking to attract the generation of now-adults who were children or young-adults during Toonami's original run. Second, they'll start to pull in the older children of those viewers who were in their mid-20s at the time of the original Toonami.
Here's another thing.
The main criticism I've had with Adult Swim is that as digital distribution (Youtube) has driven TV ratings WAY down, the network has been forced to appeal to a much broader demographic. Like people who prefer to watch Family Guy reruns over original programming of any kind. The creative people at Williams Street have been very honest about this shift in their bumpers. Just think back to the nightly bumpers with the viewership numbers and how they would dive down whenever AS would switch from an episode of Family Guy to ANYTHING ELSE? Each week we see more and more Family Guy/King of The Hill/Futurama and less of CN's original programming.
But....things got better for CN this year. As Nick and Disney continue to pump more cash into live-action, Cartoon Network (except for a few instances) has stuck to it's animation core. Also, CN broadcasts A LOT more variety in their programming. Don't believe me? Take a look at Nick's most recent schedule...
Look at this crap. The original Nick only broadcasts 7 different shows in an entire day with 4 hours alone devoted to f'ing Spongebob. Poor today's kids.
Anyway, CN now has better ratings. Better ratings means more money. More money means more money to spend on niche programming. Like Toonami. Yay!
Who thinks Tyler will dust off Pepito for the occasion? _________________ Bang.

God, does Pepito still work? Perhaps by now hes evolved into something else.
But I agree with Zechs about the state of current television programing. Nick and Disney both seem to rely on just a handful of programs but put all of their other shows on the specialty channels like NickToons and Disney XD.
While I realize that I'm way out of their original demographic, I think the real death of Toonami started back when they moved to Saturdays only and were replaced by Miguzi. Eventually, the after school programming just stopped being awesome. Hell, I remember back in grade school, waiting for school to end so I could run home, make sure the VCR was actually recording and then speeding through my paper route so I wouldn't miss the shows. The feeling of coming home to see a new episode of Gundam Wing or DBZ, thats what kids miss out on now days. And in a world where everything is instant, waiting till the weekend for shows just became inconvenient.
Oh well, its not something I have to worry about now days. I'm just glad to have it back. Tom just made everything so much more bad ass. _________________ I'm getting too old for this. :SNAP: OH GOD, MY HIP!

Absolutely!
Oh, and I hate you right now for reminding me about Miguzi. I can't believe there was a part of my soul dark enough to still remember the hatred I had for that block. _________________ Bang.

I'm not sure I'll be able to watch the whole block, but I did upgrade to a DVR just so I could record it. I honestly didn't want to pull out the old VCR. _________________ I'm getting too old for this. :SNAP: OH GOD, MY HIP!

Its confirmed now via Twitter.
I didn't think they'd be able to build a massive juggernaut lineup right off the bat anyway for a block that got reinstated merely a month after a fanservice day. What this really is, is the start of a new beginning. It has the potential, and hopefully, it can be seen through.
Have hope Toonami Faithful, we will see our old shows and new shows soon. After all were getting 2 new ones right off the bat!
