The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, Babylonians celebrated the beginning of a new year on what is now March 23, although they themselves had no written calendar.

Late March actually is a logical choice for the beginning of a new year. It is the time of year that spring begins and new crops are planted. January 1, on the other hand, has no astronomical nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary.

The Babylonian new year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year's Eve festivities pale in comparison.

The Romans continued to observe the new year on March 25, but their calendar was continually tampered with by various emperors so that the calendar soon became out of synchronization with the sun.

In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the new year. But tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, established what was come to be known as the Julian Calendar. It again established January 1 as the new year. But in order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days.

Although in the first centuries AD the Romans continued celebrating the new year, the early Catholic Church condemned the festivities as paganism. But as Christianity became more widespread, the early church began having its own religious observances concurrently with many of the pagan celebrations, and New Year's Day was no different. New Years is still observed as the Feast of Christ's Circumcision by some denominations.

During the Middle Ages, the Church remained opposed to celebrating New Years. January 1 has been celebrated as a holiday by Western nations for only about the past 400 years.

Well, the first day of 2003 is gone. What does the new year hold for the members of the world's greatest message board dedicated to Toonami, anime, and general insanity, founded by Tyler and Zogg, and residing at "http://www.toonamiinfolink.com/modules.php?name=Forums"? Let's look into the crystal ball and find out...

-Spookmonkey will start an argument and, soon thereafter, get into a verbal slapping match with counterparadox, with Force_Attuned_Krogoth goin' around them like this: *does wierd, bow-legged monkey-dance in a circle*

-Goufcustom will be strapped to a rabid gopher, Jesse Jackson, and "Titan: The Novelty Nuclear Missle" (You'll never know when it'll go off! Amuse your friends, confuse your enemies. Start the party with a bang with "Titan.")

-The Banhammer will get a definite workout when the board is annually innundated with n00bs. Intelligence declared an indangered species.

-Rycel will reply to a topic which will then quickly be buried because nobody could find a clean rhyme for "krajina."

-Board members will break their fingers by banging on their keyboards while repeatedly trying and repeatedly failing to type out the name of one of the board's new members: Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern-Schplenden-Schlitter-Crasscrenbon-Fried-Digger-Dingle-Dangle-Dongle-Dungle-Burstein-Von- Knacker-Thrasher-Apple-Banger-Horowitz-Ticolensic-Grander-Knotty-Spelltinkle-Grandlich-Grumblemeyer- Spelterwasser-Kurstlich-Himbleeisen-Bahnwagen-Gutenabend-Bitte-Ein-Nurnburger-Bratwustle-Gerspurten- Mitz-Weimache-Luber-Hundsfut-Gumberaber-Shönendanker-Kalbsfleisch-Weimache-Aucher von Hautkopf of Ulm. (Ow, my sore digits.)

EDIT: CP, like, so TOTALLY put some spaces in between a few of those hyphens in that like german talk there so that the words didn't all like stretch the page out cuz it was making his head dizzy.

No way I'd get wasted. Can't stand alcahol(sp?) at all. I went to bed at midnight and slept for a full 16 hours. Yes sixteen. I prefer my little traditions over getting plastered.

Well, had you gotten plastered I suspect you would have slept the same amount. Only difference would be waking up with a headache. But yeah, I didn't drink either. Don't see a point in getting smashed, really.

And Tifa, it's our only talent ^_^

I got semi-plastered, I had to drive home. And actuyalyl if he slept 16 hours he would have slept off most if not all of his hangover.

They best way to get smashed is to drink because you like the taste and don't stop until you can't stand. Even if it's a pink sissy fu-fu drink.
