So, I just watched the premiere on Jetstream today, and I'm requesting--nay, BEGGING--you all right now not to subject yourselves to the horror that I just witnessed.
The show is handled like a 4Kids dub: Decent voices, but horrible editing. This "first episode" was actually the first two (and half of the third) merged into one, and you've got your classic "minor touches" removed for absolutely no reason. The opening and ending were also replaced, and that's normally understandable (9 out of 10 companies do this), but this song is so bad that it makes me miss the Gum-Gum Rap. I'm dead serious.
The worst part is that it's not even 4Kids that's calling the shots! It's being done by the original companies that produced the series. Why did they, of all people, feel the need to localize it in this manner? I can understand that if they gave the license away to a U.S. dubbing company, but...the people who made this art are butchering THEIR OWN WORK?! That's like da Vinci removing the background from the Mona Lisa just because he thinks it can appeal to French art critics. It's stupid and makes zero sense.
The original ES21 isn't a bad show, but what's currently airing on Jetstream (coming soon to NFL Rush) is not worth your half-hour. _________________ Toonami visual schedule - UPDATED AUGUST 2, 2015

I agree. I'm extremely dissapointed in this series, especially since I loved the first 17 episodes in Japanese.
I believe that there are two reasons why this show was treated poorly. One, Viz doesn't own the license, the Japanese companies (NAS, TV Tokyo, and Shueisha) do. Viz didn't dub it either, Studopolis did that with those Japanese companies. If it was under Viz's complete control, it would have seen much better treatment than this 4Kids hack of a production.
Two is the cultural differences. In Japan, football is an EXTREMELY uncommon sport, unlike in America. The Eyeshield 21 manga (and its anime) were designed in a way that would entertain the reader/viewer while educating them about "American football". Because the main character Sena starts off with zero knowledge of football, he is taken through the steps one by one, even the show's eyecatches featured football-themed Q&A. Through this, the reader/viewer would slowly gain an understanding of the sport.
However, in America, football is a very common sport and most people already understand it. I'm guessing that for that reason, they just cut out material deemed "unnecessary" because the companies figured that everyone already knows football. To me, this is a really bad idea, and a bit of pejorative generalization between cultures. If they kept all of that original design, they could have brought in more viewers who were younger aged or people who didn't know a thing about football, and letting them learn about it while enjoying the show.
Oh well, this show better get a uncut DVD release. And it better not go at Full Moon's pace...or heads will roll...

Gotta agree, not the best anime on the 'Stream, though, for me at least, that's not saying much anyway. _________________ "Never confuse being lazy with being apathetic.
