Are the strips being printed in color?
Without the outlines, I'd think you'd just have abstract, gray-scaled shapes on the page, but I'm not familiar with newsprinting techniques; if your editor approves, then that's good enough for me.
Now to the off-the-cuff remarks:
If you hadn't said anything about Terry's horns, I don't think I'd have noticed. It's rather subtle.
Boss does look like he's perpetually pissed with the triangle eyes. To convey other emotions, you might have to change the shapes to suit, but I know that's a lot more work.
