Post subject: Graphic Novels vs. Comic Books
|

One interesting thing that happens to you in this world is that you go around calling an object something, then one day you tell someone else and they have a heart attack.
Sort of...
For the past year or so my friends and I have gone around in circles- are they comic books or graphic novels. Mainly refering to all the mango ones out there.
Now the way I see it, a comic book is a flimsy, 20-50 page half-magazine sized publication, while a graphic novel is either several comic books combined into one book sized volume, or a large volume of comics, in a book size.
What really gets me is the way people(high school students) go crazy when they hear the words "graphic novel"- they think it's a sin, and chew you out for it. Even Borders, Hastings, and all the rest of those good places have the section labled "Graphic Novels"

It seems like Graphic Novels is a more Politcally Correct version of the same name. Quite frankly, you can call it whatever the hell you want and I don't care. _________________ anime is teh s uck

Not so much "Politically Correct" as "More Marketable".
Otherwise, yeah, call it whatever you want. What do high-schoolers know, anyway? _________________ "When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."- C.S. Lewis

Most of us know jack shit, I however am not retarded like most so to me when Graphic novel comes to mind I think of both Manga and comic books. Although generally Manga does tend to be a hell of a lot longer (although there are some long ass comics out there).
I always thought was really cool was that in some mangas one man(or woman) will do all of the animations, like in The Five Star Stories Mamuro Magano does every illustration by hand.
Although in my opinion both comic books and manga are good, they're equals to me. _________________ The Mighty King of Bad Ideas |

graphic novel basicly came about as comic book story arcs/themes collected into one book. Each comic is a "chapter" and so with multiple "chapters"is becomes a novel. a graphic novel. this has been a presentation from the conocimientoainfully Obvious Corperation. Thank you.
Manga's are just comic books if they don't have "chapters" in them. So most mangas aren't GN's b definition. _________________ "Veni. Vedi. Spooki." - Julius Caesar

Manga books are usually several comics combined from a monthly or weekly magazine appearance. But thhis varies from series to series some are just plonked straight ou tinto book form without a previous appearance in magazines like Shonen Jump or something.
On a side note, a comic shop near me has started stocking Shonen Jump sstraight in from Japan! Sure they're in Japanese but hey! They're hot off the shelves! _________________ rednekbob9: 1: You're Female

Comics is still an incorrect name to give to most of the stuff on the shelves, since Comics derives from Comedic art which things like Spawn and X-men is not. _________________ Bang. |

I'm not sure when but Kia Asamiya is going to be the artist of an issue of X-men. But in the last few years Comics have change art wise...They sem to have a more manga look to them in my opinion _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." - Calvin

*sigh* this sounds like a "Anime" vs. "Japanimation" thread I participated in a looooooong time ago in a message board far, far away...
"Transmetropolitan" is a graphic novel...
"Spiderman" is a comic book...
"The Preacher" is a graphic novel...
"Bone" is a comic book...
"The Road to Perdition" is a graphic novel (and a basis of a film)...
"Johnny the Homicidal Maniac" is a comic book...
most Manga I buy are in collected books rather than in seperate weekly magazines, but being that they aren't American, I just call it all manga... _________________ "The principles you live by create the world you live in; if you change the principles you live by, you will change your world." -Blaine Lee

Agree here.

Disagree here, since "Bone", like "Cerebus" and "Strangers in Paradise", is one continuous story comprised of many chapters, same as your beloved "Transmet" and "Preacher".
