Post subject: Sick of these freakin' spambots...
|
|
|
|
Has anyone behind the scenes of this site looked into the possibility of blocking this daily spambot plague from the forum?
I have an idea. It worked for Animation Insider, and I hope it works here, too.
Spambots generally tend to create new threads instead of new posts, so I think we should turn off thread starting for new members until they've made X number of posts in other peoples' threads (I think a minimum of 2 would be good enough). AI tried the same thing, and the spambots became virtually absent ever since. _________________ Toonami visual schedule - UPDATED AUGUST 2, 2015 |

Sounds good to me, but do we have a master coder around anymore?

I don't think there's a way to do that with this board.
Honestly, I'm tempted to just turn off (or break if i can't turn off) new user registrations. _________________ My old sig was too long. |

It'd be nice if there was an add-on or upgrade to tighten the registration process, either e-mail confirmation and/or those image code thingamabobs... er, captchas. _________________ "When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."- C.S. Hello, I registered after having to manually activate my account.
Will this make a difference? Time will tell. |

After 24 hours, I can report that none of the new "members" who signed up on the 15th have posted anything. All 'bot activity has been from the older ones that haven't been blocked yet (the ones with the "Chinese" e-mail addresses ) _________________ "When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."- C.S. So, what now? Oh, and it's good to see all of you. _________________ "Never confuse being lazy with being apathetic. Lazy people are not apathetic. Apathetic people don't care about anything. Lazy people care, they just don't do anything about it."-Garfield |

Well, now the forums will still only be frequented by a few of us, but we'll just have less spam to ignore. _________________ To do two things at once is to do neither. —Publilius Syrus, Roman slave, first century B.C. |

It could be done. Preventing new threads til X posts.
It would be kind of a challenge since phpNuke's version of phpBB is a terrible thing. That and I don't have admin capabilities in such a way that I could do it. There are so many things that need fixing on the board. _________________ The problem with America is stupidity. Some of the spambots are posting again on the front page. _________________ Able and Baker is nice. |

Yea, noticed that a few weeks back. As a reporter here, the 'Delete' option is displayed, but access is denied, which is sorta odd because I can remove comments in the 'Reviews' area just fine. I guess we need someone with Administrator status?

Pretty much. it's just a few IP's, but only the guys with 'Hammer pants can touch them. _________________ "When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."- C.S. Lewis

Theres gotta be something we can do, I'm even open to that closing new user registrations until we can find a better solution. mind you that would be shooting ourselves in the foot but what can we do?... |

I have two suggestions:
A) Is there a way we can switch to a new forum entirely? I'm pretty sure the Internet has changed a lot since we opened over a decade ago. It would also help clean out a lot of clutter that has built up here over the years.
B) Make account activation a manual process for the mods rather than automatic. Sure, it may require a bit of work, but it would prevent bots from immediately posting crap as soon as they sign up. _________________ Toonami visual schedule - UPDATED AUGUST 2, 2015 |

A: I'd rather not set up a new forum on this server. It's too much of a security risk. I'm not a fan of this outdated forum, already...
If there's a consensus on a new location, I'd have no problem blessing and linking it as official and such.
B: That's doable. Probably. I've made Nobuyuki a forum admin, and I can do the same for you. As I understand it, the forum can be configured so administrators need to approve new members, but I don't know what sort of notification would be generated (or if the list would have to be manually checked).
