.hack//LIMINALITY is the Anime Movie that is packaged with the PS2 game .hack//INFECTION. The only way to get this movie is to buy the game. This should introduce you to the basic idea of the series. //Liminality takes place shortly after the events of episode 1 of .hack//SIGN and during the events of the game, .hack//INFECTION. //LIMINALITY tells the story of a young girl named Mai Minasa who is introduced to a MMORPG called the "The World." While playing with her friend they're both attacked by a mysterious monster in the game. After the attack Mai wakes up in the hospital, it appears that both she and her friend slipped into a coma while playing the game. For some reason Mai has awakened but her friend is still comatose. Together with an ex/CC Corp employee she tries to find out the secrets behind "The World." Although packaged with a game this is a full length movie (about 45 min) and features great animation. No surprise there since the character designer is none other than Yoshiyuki Sadamoto of Evangelion fame. Unfortunately things don't get really exciting until the end...and then...well, its over... .hack//LIMINALITY will come in four volumes each packaged with the .hack game. I personally enjoyed the story and can't wait till episode 2 comes out. I noticed that the Animation seems much more fluid than traditional Anime. Extras include commentary from the creators, an art gallery, and the .hack//SIGN opening music video. Remember, this cannot be bought anywhere else, if you want it then you have to buy the game.
