Animatrix, The: A Detective Story

Arguably the best of the nine Animatrix shorts, director Shinichiro Wantanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Macross Plus) takes a unique spin on the world of The Matrix with great results.

Plot:
"A Detective Story" revolves around a private eye named Ash who's been down on his luck as of late. A job offer from a mysterious party sets him in the pursuit of the famed hacker, Trinity, though it's apparent there's more going on than what he's aware of...

Review:
The easiest way to sum this up is to simply say this work combines The Matrix with a flair of Cowboy Bebop. This is in no way a bad thing, as the "style" factor the latter is known for just oozes out here from start to finish. Even the two primary music tracks sound like something that'd accompany Spike and gang. The animation is fluid (especially noticeable toward the end), and the black-and-white look adds to the overall feel portrayed by everything else.

James Arnold Taylor does a great job of playing the detective's role, convincingly portraying the lead character lost in the story unfolding around him, and Carrie-Anne Moss reprises her character, making this feel more in-sync to the movies as opposed to merely a name association. I took a quick listen to the Japanese track, which sounded fine to me, though it'd be unfair to comment further due to my ignorance concerning Japanese VA's.

Perhaps the only complaint I can muster about "A Detective Story" is its length, as Ash was such a fascinating character to only get about ten minutes worth of screen-time. I suppose such a complaint only lends to how good the short turned out.

Overall:
"A Detective Story" was the first of the Animatrix shorts I got to see (thanks to a friend of a friend who bought "Enter The Matrix" and didn't want the bonus disk), and even after seeing the others, it still remains my favorite. While it lacks the direct movie tie-ins that "Final Flight Of The Osiris" and "Kid's Story" possess, this short holds its own as one of, if not, the best The Animatrix has to offer.

Note that this chrono uk replica watches reads like a dashboard. Thus, on the grey dial stand blue counters in which Replica watch contrast the red and white of the needles, indexes, and timers. And to distinguish patek philippe replica more easily the main counter at noon, the latter was encircled by a mirror polished aliasing. Note that the dial leaves "dive in the engine", look through the wide opening which allows to observe the operation.
