King of Bandit Jing (Vol. 1)
Story
Our hero Jing must've done something to really piss off someone, because for some reason he seems to be the world's most wanted man. Everyone has heard of him by his title of Bandit King at some point and everyone goes on alert when they hear that he might be coming their way. Sound Familar? Yeah well, this reminded me of Trigun quite a bit. Unfortunately the likeness ends there.
In case it isn't clear by now, Jing is a bandit. But he's more like a Robin Hood type of bandit, it would seem that he only steals from those who harm the innocent. For instance, In episode one Jing and his partner Kir (who is an albatross by the way... yes the bird) are out to get their hands on the Twin Mermaids. A jewel that, according to an informant named Postino (a mail man), has a "surprise" inside. During the quest Jing winds up reunting a mother with her daughter. And this the kind of thing you can expect from this volume of Jing. It's pretty much the same throughout all four episodes, Jing goes into a town and helps the people who live there. Although episodes 3 and 4 may hint towards some sort of plot development, we'll have to wait and see to wait and see how it turns out.
Animation
There are alot of close ups in this series but they manage to keep the animation flowing through them quite nicely (usually by shifting background and foregrounds layers throughout the shot). The fight scenes are decent, not anything mind blowing but still enjoyable. I also liked the character designs (well, at least some of them) and I liked the way the animation flows when Jing uses his "Kir Royale" special attack, but that got old after the fifth or sixth time I had to sit through it in one episode (yes, they use it that much). I will givethe animators credit for trying to change that up at least a little bit everytime he used it however.
Sound
Same problem as above, I hated hearing Jing scream out "KIR ROYALE!!!" everytime he used that particular technique. Otherwise, sound was pretty good. Some of the Voice acting sucked in my opinion but it was obvious that it was done that way on purpose to set a slight comedic tone for this series. Although I never really found myself laughing out loud. Basically, the characters that matter sound good.
Extras
ADV trailers
Production art
Clean opening and closing
Overall
I hope they have more in the way of story development coming up, because as it is this series just doesn't stand up well with out it. Oh sure the characters are likable and all, but I found myself wanting more when it was all over. This definately isn't something I would go out and buy right away, I'll have to watch some later episodes and see how the story progresses. Until then I can only give this one 2.5 stars (4 out of 10).
