Post subject: Cel paint or CG color?
|

I prefer cel painted shows much over CG colored shows (which plague anime these days).
I have tons of reasons too, but I'm afraid of spreading my dreaded "24fps rant" to this board. I find it sad that Inuyasha is no longer done on cels, and has switched to CG..... Truly sad (to me anyway).
Remember, don't confuse CG color with CGI animation. |

Well to explain, CG color is where all coloring of an animation is done via computers, and remains digital. Cel painted color uses celluloid pieces that have drawings, which the backs of them are painted on. These are developed and have a variety of nice FX that can be done due to exposure techniques. ^_^
Anyway, all cel shows seem to have died out. Inuyasha being the last one I believe.
All gundam series, excluding Gundam Seed (and perhaps Turn-A) have been animated on cels.
Typical Cels
Typical CG color
*Note, I have attempted a digital remastering of Gundam Wing's DVDs, since I found them to be quite ugly. I also know that they could look better because well...... Go on the US Gundam Wing site and find screenshots. They are incredible.
Mind you, cels may look uglier to some people on older shows (Above is Gundam Wing, 1995, compared to Full Metal Panic! 2001) but try cels on newer shows (1998+) and I find them amazing. Even on some older things, I find cel's far higher contrast to blow CG out of the water.
If you want to talk good cel quality, AND animation watch:
Char's Counterattack
Cowboy Bebop
08th MS Team
Gundam 0083
Inuyasha
Big-O S1 (S2 is CG color, and is uglier IMO) |

You do realize that this also trnasfers over to American made shows, right? I say this because all you mentined were japanese shows, yet this is not the only animation in the world.
ANYway, I appreciate the art. I have a respect for animation, and would prefer everything to be hand done. Sadly, with money the way it is, cheaper is better. So as long as the quality remains the same, I suppose that's all I can ask for. _________________ anime is teh s uck

you know what though, it ALL depends on the talent of the person coloring them. You would be hard pressed to decide between a phenomenal cel painter and a phenomenal cg painter. It's all in the talent. |

Oh yes I know it transfers.
Cheaper is better, but only from an economical POV, which of course, is how companies think. On the other hand though, I noticed that with all the "cheapness" around, a lot more crappy anime is "allowed" to be produced. Or to put it in other words, now the people that have crappy ideas, don't require so much money to realize them. If things were more expensive, companies would only invest in what they know will make money.

It's not quite how phenominal they are. If they are both phenominal then the cel already has the distinct advantage over the CG in the contrast department. |

Not really, esentially each has its pluses and minuses. Color comes acrossed cleaner and brighter with CG but it's harder to get the darker mood tones right, hand painted screams moods and tones but can't handle the types of color cg can.
It's give and take. Besides the CG painting speeds the process up tripple fold. |

I must be blind because I don't see the difference between the two screenshots. Anyone care to explain it to those who are less savvy on the technical part of animation? _________________ There is limited intelligence in the galaxy, but the stupidity of the universe is infinite. |

It's difficult to describe the differences. Just LOOK at them. There are subtle differences between the two in terms of contrast, brightness, and clarity. _________________ I take no responsibility for the majority of teh funny I post here.

of course those really aren't very comparible. What you need is two images of similar content. |

Once I get a DVD screenshot of Inuyasha, and then once Viz has them over here, the much farther episodes, which are now CG, that will be a nice comparison... |

Since you have a Gundam W screen shot, put up a screenshot of Gundam SEED. That should hold us over until there is a same-show comparison, such as Inu Yasha. _________________ anime is teh s uck

You could use a batman beyond cel and a return of the joker shot. |

I'd much rather get something where the ages of the animation aren't too far apart (because I know the CG does have a very high possibility to excel over an older cel series), this is why I wanted to find Inuyasha comparisons.
Was Turn-A Gundam animated on cels? That's the most recent I can think of next to SEED. Otherwise I'll pull out the later 08th MS Team eps (done in 1998). |
