'Voltron' Next in Line for Big-Screen Announcements
20th Century Fox-based New Regency Productions is close to a deal with the
Mark Gordon Co. to adapt Toonami founding series Voltron: Defender of the Universe into a
live-action film, according to today's Daily Variety. Gordon has been developing the picture with scriptwriter Justin Marks. Marks' take is described as
a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico. Five ragtag
survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five
lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding
Voltron that helps battle Earth's invaders. A Voltron movie has been in the works for nearly three years, with Jim Young's Animus Films funding its development, but this summer's box-office success of Transformers has piqued the interest of New Regency to join the project. Marks has become a go-to guy in Hollywood for comicbook, videogame and toy-based adaptations, handling the previously-announced He-Man and the Masters of the Universe as well as the Green Arrow-based movie Supermax for Warner Brothers, in addition to a Street Fighter feature for
Fox. (all we need now is a Birdman announcement to complete the set.- N.)

Now Warners Has Three To Make Ready... Thundercats, Ho!
Following hot on the heels of their recent announcements of live-action adaptations of other old Toonami favorites, Warner Brothers is bringing the big cats to the silver screen, by way of producer Paula Weinstein (Blood Diamond) and scriptwriter Paul Sopocy.
No anticipated release date has been announced, and the movie's plotline currently stands as an origin story expanding on the major heroes and villains
from the animated series, with the plot focusing on Lion-O coming of
age as the leader of the Thundercats.
Update 06/08/2007: The Variety story identifies this as a CGI-animated feature rather than a live-action adaptation.

Joseph Barbera, 1911 - 2006
Joseph Barbera, who with William Hanna founded powerhouse animation
factory Hanna-Barbera, creator of TV gems such as "The Flintstones" and
"The Jetsons," died of natural causes at his home Monday. He was 95.Early
in their careers, Barbera and Hanna (who died in 2001) won seven Oscars
for the "Tom and Jerry" cartoon series at MGM; later they earned eight
Emmys as the duo set about defining TV animation. Hanna-Barbera Productions became by the late-1960s the most successful television animation studio in the business, producing hit programs such as The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Jonny Quest, and Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! by the end of the decade. After the sale of Hanna-Barbera Productions by owner Taft Broadcasting to Ted Turner in 1991, the Hanna-Barbera library of creative work was used as the foundation for the creation of Cartoon Network in 1992. Hanna and Barbera stayed on as advisors and periodically worked on new Hanna-Barbera shows, including the What-a-Cartoon! series. After Hanna's death, Barbera had remained active as an
executive producer for Warner Bros. Animation on television series such
as What's New, Scooby-Doo? and Tom and Jerry Tales. He also wrote, co-storyboarded, co-directed and co-produced the theatrical Tom and Jerry short The Karateguard
in 2005, thus returning to his and Hanna's first successful cartoon
format.

Takeshi Jinno Injured in Off-Track Crash
Anonymous writes " PASADENA Calif. - Actor Haley Joel Osment fractured a rib and hurt his shoulder in a car crash early Thursday, his doctor said.
The 18-year-old was in good condition and expected to make a complete recovery, said Dr. Paul Gilbert, an orthopedic surgeon at Huntington Hospital. He said Osment would remain hospitalized at least through Friday.
Osment, nominated for an Academy Award for The Sixth Sense, and more recently the voice actor for lead character Takeshi Jinno in the formerly-Toonami series IGPX, was driving a 1995 Saturn about 1 a.m. when he crashed into a mailbox on a brick base and flipped over, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Greg Sisneros said.
Osment, who was awake and talking immediately after the crash in La Canada Flintridge, was alone in the car and headed for his Los Angeles home when the crash occurred, Sisneros said.
"He's pretty uncomfortable and resting. He just wants to let everyone know he's going to be OK," Gilbert said.
La Canada Flintridge is about 14 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
We at the Infolink wish Mr. Osment a speedy recovery.
(Thanks for the story- N.) "

Comics and cartoon legend Alex Toth passes
According to a posting on the official Alex Toth Web site, the legendary artist/designer has passed away. He was 78.
Born on June 25th, 1928
in New York City, Toth is known for his work as a designer and creator
of a number of comics and animated properties. Probably his best known
creations to the public at large were for Hanna Barbera, where in the
'60s and '70s he designed much loved creations like Space Ghost, Josie
and the P----cats, The Herculoids and the Super Friends. His design
influence is still felt today as many of those early cartoons have been
reappropriated for new shows on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, such as
the popular "Space Ghost: Coast to Coast" and "Sea Lab 2021."
Toth's oldest son Eric
said Saturday evening his father passed away early Saturday morning
while sitting at his drawing table. No further details were available,
but Eric did note that an appropriate memorial panel may be planned at
this summer's Comic-Con International in San Diego.
Eric Toth said, "…all
of your cards and letters of the recent past were very much appreciated
by my father. Only in these last years did he begin to understand and
accept the fact that his work had touched so many people's lives."
